Fairbanks' acting Police Chief Brad Johnson announced that Sgt. Allen Brandt has died following complications from surgery in a brief, emotional press conference this afternoon [Friday].

"Fairbanks lost a hero today," Johnson said, with Fairbanks city Mayor Jim Matherly standing somberly next to him. "I'm sorry to have to let you know that earlier this afternoon, Sgt. Allen Brandt lost the fight. He had surgery yesterday and suffered complications afterward which continued to deteriorate throughout the day and from which he was unable to recover.

That's so sad!! He survived the shooting but died after surgery..wow :(

The Northern Lights were pretty awesome on Friday (I like to think they were in memory of the police officer). They started off dim but kept getting brighter. Around midnight they started dancing like crazy..it always amazes me how fast they can move! Beautiful <3

Ouch!! Haha. I've tried the laser with Abby but she gets bored quickly lol

This is so sad: Two Fairbanks teens were killed Monday afternoon after their SUV hit another vehicle and went into the Delta River.

According to an Alaska State Trooper news release, Carmella Flynn, 17, was driving a 2003 GMC Yukon northbound near 210 Mile Richardson Highway when she lost control on a curve. The Yukon crossed into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a 2011 Ford F-150 driven by Lucas Clooten, 37, of Fairbanks.

The Yukon overturned and was submerged in the river. Emergency responders pulled the SUV from the water and unsuccessfully attempted lifesaving measures on Flynn and her passenger, Theresa Runfola, 17, according to troopers

Carmella Flynn was the granddaughter of one of my coworkers. :( :( So sad!!

Mom told me that Snowy died this morning. :( He wasn't doing well at all when I left on Sunday, and mom said he just got worse after I left. He had gotten super skinny and feeble and looked so uncomfortable, so I figured his time was almost up. This morning dad put Snowy on a footstool and he died peacefully (hopefully, dad said he wasn't groaning or anything) soon after. He was such a sweet kitty and I'm so happy we had a great 20 years together. I still remember getting him at a soccer game as a kid..he was so cute! I'm sad that he's gone, but it was for the best..it was hard seeing him so uncomfortable. :( He'll always have a special place in my heart <3

Omg that quote gives me the chills. I was so sad when I heard Alan Rickman died..he was such a good actor! I loved him in Harry Potter and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. So crazy he and David Bowie died within days of each other, both 69 and from cancer. D: I hate how each year like 3 awesome people die so close together (I don't think I'll ever get over Heath Ledger's death :(). So sad..

Day #13: Your favorite villain song )

Today's trivia: If you look up into the blue sky long enough, and with enough attention, you should be able to see tiny blue-white dots flashing around the sky. The phenomenon was so well-known that it acquired the nickname "blue-sky sprites," but they're actually white blood cells moving through your eye (I have seen that happen before, it weirds me out haha)

The cat I was sponsoring, Casper, passed away yesterday. :( He had spinal cancer and was found paralyzed. He was brought to Tabby's Place and they said he only had a few weeks to live and he'd never walk again. With love and medicine, Casper beat the odds and walked again and lived longer than expected (he was brought there in February 2014). I had never met Casper, but I still felt a bond with him. I had found Tabby's Place (they're a cage-free sanctuary for special needs cats, cats rescued from hopeless situations, etc) on Google when looking for cats to sponsor and loved what they do..they're definitely full of love (when I first became Casper's sponsor, they sent me an email, a personal letter and a picture of him thanking me for being a sponsor!). Too bad they're all the way in New Jersey..I'd love to visit them! I will sponsor another cat that needs help of course, but I'll never forget Casper. I'm gonna post his obituary here, because it's beautiful and just want a record of it

I was so sad when I heard of his death earlier today!! He was so cool and such a great actor. It was super awesome when he collaborated with Rhapsody too! It won't be the same without him. :( He will definitely be remembered <3

Your Motto is Kind

Your motto is: "No one has ever made himself great by showing how small someone else is."
You simply live life by the Golden Rule, and it has given you more than buckets of gold ever could.

You treat people as well as you can, and you do your best not to judge anyone. You don't know where someone has been or where she is going.
So much of the world has opened up to you through your approach to life. Others trust you, and a lot of opportunities just naturally come your way.

Yeah!!

Today I found out Jimmy Gaydos, who was on Ultimate Survival Alaska and who came into the bookstore sometimes was shot and killed yesterday afternoon. I am shocked and sad..I just saw him last week or the week before. He was so interesting and nice..I can't believe someone would do that. :( :( I'll miss seeing him in the bookstore..

RIP Cheetah 1998-2014. :( Mom said she had really been going downhill the last couple days..she could barely move, kept staring into space, wasn't eating, twitched a lot..she had gotten so skinny too. Mom couldn't leave her miserable like that, so she went to have her put down (she probably would have died in the next few days..no need to prolong the agony). Awww..I'll miss her. :( She's in a better place and not in pain anymore at least..

Day 27- quote that describes you )

Yesterday I got the news my friend Pat had died (April 15). Dad showed me the obituary and was surprised I didn't already know. I had last seen her 2 or 3 months ago I think. So sad, we always had so much fun together. :( Pat used to live at the same apartment complex I do..she lived down the hallway from me. She also worked at the Literacy Council cleaning books. We quickly formed a close relationship..most Thursdays we would go out to dinner. She also never acted her age and dressed like a teenager haha (she was in her late 70s)..probably one reason we got along so well. She had had a stroke and was on oxygen from emphysema and asked for my help a lot. She'd call and ask for my help and I'd gladly go down the hallway and help her. Sometimes we had movie nights, and once I went with her to her son's house to hang out. She had told me her life was much better with me in it and less lonely. Then Pat got sick and had to go to the hospital..she couldn't work at the Literacy Council anymore and had to move to the Pioneer Home (it was worrying she lived alone). I was definitely sad..I still miss seeing her randomly doing laundry or whatever. I'm glad I got to visit her with Dana at the Pioneer Home last year and that occasionally she would come to the bookstore to buy books. She was fun, caring, understanding and one of the best friends I've ever had. I will always cherish our memories and I'm glad I was there for her in her last years of life. <3 It's gonna be sad never seeing her again..

Pumpkin has been gone two weeks now..I don't like giving up hope, but if anyone knew their way around outside, it was her. She would have come home by now. I hope her death wasn't too painful :(

Yesterday I went to the state fair. I had to take advantage of the last of the warm weather haha. Dad dropped me off and I had 3 hours there. I got my Dippin' Dots. :D That's like..a big reason I go to the fair haha..so yummy. I also went to the petting zoo and became a kid again haha. They had rabbits, guinea pigs, sheep or goats, a little horse and chickens. It was awesome..they were so cute. :D I also visited the other animal barns and the horse stalls. I love animals haha. I bought more glacier/mountain pics, a laptop case with a pic of the Northern Lights and mountains and Chad Carpenter's newest Tundra book. He gave me the "Heather discount" since he's seen me so many times..aww. He's so nice hehe. I was definitely tired when I got home :P

One of the people that lives at Southall was there and she said someone was moving into Sally's apartment. I asked if she moved and she said she had knee surgery and the next day was found dead on the floor. Noooo..Sally was so cool!! She used to work at the Literacy Council and was so nice. So sad. She also said Pat wasn't feeling well..the aneurism in her head may be getting bigger and may burst soon..no way to save her then. Omg..I better visit Pat again before that happens. That is SUPER sad..Pat is a great friend :(

Grandma died yesterday. She hadn't been doing well so it wasn't unexpected, but still sad. At least it was at home in her bed and she's not suffering anymore. I feel guilty about not seeing her before though..

Dana's coming to visit in July! We may have to do things on our own since mom has to work. Taking the train to Denali would be cool..

Yesterday we had Pat over at mom's house (she would have been alone on New Years if we hadn't). Before dinner we watched Wall-e..she thought it was cute hehe. We had a post roast for dinner..Pat loved it haha. Mom made a fire in the woodstove and we sat by that for awhile..then dad set off the rest of the fireworks. Yaay haha. Then it was time to go..I think Pat really appreciated being able to come over

One of the people in the apartment building died in the past few days. I had just talked to her the day before she went into the hospital and she seemed fine. Then she went to the hospital and they said they didn't think she was going to live..then she went into a coma and passed away. Apparently she had cancer. That's just..wow

One of my favorite Deadliest Catch captains, Phil Harris, died yesterday from a stroke he suffered last month. I'm shocked and sad. Poor Phil..*sniff*

Today is my brother's 18th birthday..woww. Wasn't he just like..a kid? Haha. We went to Pike's and there were lots of people driving on the river (eek). We had a chinook today and it got in the 20s!! The ice seems to be melting on the river by the University Street Bridge. Wow haha

Before I talk about the hike..grandma died early this morning. I'm thinking it was peacefully in her sleep cause she was basically just sleeping before she died. Hopefully she's in a better place now. Well..yesterday we drove to Gulkana Glacier. The whole week I was obsessing over the weather..it said rain and stuff but mom had checked the weather at work and was confident it would get better in the afternoon as soon as we got to the glacier haha. It was raining and cloudy when we drove there but mom was still confident. We met up with Carol and it was misting on us and a cloud was coming over the glacier but the mist didn't last long. Basically the whole way we walked on glacial moraines. Let me tell you..they were rocky the WHOLE way and I got tired of walking on rocks after a minute haha. We had to cross a suspension bridge over a creek to get to the glacier. That bridge was FUN haha. Everyone else was like "OMG THIS IS SCARY" and I was like "THIS IS AWESOME!" haha. We got to the glacier..and it became sunny..like almost exactly mom said it would. And when we left there were clouds all around..except where we were..that gave me CHILLS. Whoaaa. We weren't able to walk on the glacier cause the ice bridge to get to it had melted. I was like "what?!" cause I was coming thinking we'd be able to walk on it. But there really wasn't any way to get on it without killing yourself. The creeks were TOO rushing and wide, the rocks on the glacial silt were too unstable to climb on (as I found out haha), and even if you did get across the creeks the terminal moraines were too steep and possibly unstable to walk on. Oh well. We sat on the rocks for a bit until a falling rock threatened to hit us..it might have if it didn't hit another rock and stop. We decided to leave then. :P We walked back in the warmth, got dinner at Delta Junction and drove home. Mom saw 5 moose and I saw 4! Wow haha

Billy Mays is dead?! That was surprising to wake up to. Maybe a bit creepy he also died at 50..this was a bad week for celebrities! I wonder if his "screaming" had anything to do with it..

OMGGG..it's sunny and clear and in the 60s at Whittier, Portage Glacier, and Seward (though with some clouds there). That like..never happens. Why couldn't that have happened when we were there?? Haha. Here it's cloudy and in the 50s..whaaat? I wonder if mom is drooling over their webcams :P
