I know I say this every year, but wow it went by fast, and it somehow gets faster every year. I loved finally going to Glacier Bay, and having it be even more amazing than I imagined it would be. Kayaking and geocaching, winning $500, meeting someone related to Cherry, and meeting Aimee in Anchorage were some other awesome things that happened. I can't wait to see what awesome things 2018 has in store!

Here are all the books I read this year, with the star rating too (one of my favorite parts of the end of the year haha):

January
The Ice Master by Jennifer Niven (Jan 1-7) (4/5)
Ada Blackjack: A True Story of Survival in the Arctic by Jennifer Niven (Jan 8-12) (4/5)
Tragedy and Triumph: The Journals of Captain R.F. Scott's Last Polar Expedition by Robert Falcon Scott (Jan 13-24) (5/5)
Captain Francis Crozier: Last Man Standing? by Michael Smith (Jan 25-30) (4/5)

the rest )

In total, I read 66 books, beating my record of 65 from 2015!! Awesome! I read over 20,682 pages. :D Just for fun, here are previous years' stats lol

2012: 27
2013: 31
2014: 44
2015: 65
2016: 52
2017: 66

Awesome :D

Two tickets to the play in February, TERRA NOVA, BASED ON ROBERT FALCON SCOTT'S EXPEDITION!!!!??!! In Fairbanks??! *FLAILS!!!!!* OMG that is AMAZING (she asked my mom first if she thought I would like it..how could she even have any doubt haha??). I wonder if Cherry will be in it?? I so can't wait, I bet I'll just be smiling stupidly during the whole play LOL. Denise, wow, I don't think I could get her a gift that cool! I gave her a giant hug. :D What a perfect gift!! <3 (My expression says it all LOL)

She also got me this cool penguin blanket:

I found one of the coolest comics I've ever seen a couple days ago:
franklinfinalmaybe-5a336c0e6b168-png__700
"We're in the arctic, it can be cold." LOL awesome :P (except that Crozier was captain of the Terror, and Franklin was the captain of Erebus, but whatever haha)

I love coming across books at work that I read as a kid but hadn't thought about or seen in years:
25551995_2025735960784882_5500939076515502609_n
So cool! Maybe I've secretly liked penguins all along :P

We made over $600 in the bookstore today! It was busy, but it was fun lol

Ooo, I've been wondering when this was going to come out! I hope it's not too scary though (yeah it's called The Terror lol, but that was the name of Crozier's ship too). I saw that Mance Rayder from Game of Thrones will be in it lol..cool. Not a lot was known of Franklin's expedition after they disappeared, so I'm wondering how much it's going to be "based on true events.."

Haha, the kitty sounded like Greyboy in the beginning! Always amusing when they randomly go crazy :P

Tonight me and my coworkers had a "Girl's Night In" at Holly's house..we had pizza and snacks and watched National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation with popcorn. It's always fun to watch, especially with people who have never seen it before lol (you know you're watching it with Alaskans when the scene in the beginning with the kid's frozen eyes comes up and everyone's like "yeah right" LOL). I love how we enjoy hanging out with each other even when we're not at work..we're like a family! We should do it again sometime :)

A few days ago I was at a store looking for a present for work's Christmas party..I spied some books on a shelf and one of them said something about Arctic and Antarctic explorers..I opened it excitedly..but there were only a few printed pages and the rest was BLANK! Then I saw it was an old library book repurposed as a journal. Interesting idea, but that's just MEAN haha! I bought it anyway though :P

Awesome reading month, 8 books!! (Makes up for last month lol.) I also saw the movie of A Man Called Ove, which I liked a lot better than the book. spoilers! ) I am now on my 60th book of the year, woohoo :D

December 1: 'Tis the Season )
glacier_kitty: (apsley cherry-garrard 2)
Here is a passage from Emperors of the Ice that pretty much takes the words right out of my mouth (though probably more eloquently lol) as to why I love Scott's Expedition so much:

"Robert Falcon Scott was a giant, a man of irresistible vision, energy, enterprise, and charm. He was not a bad leader, or a good leader; he was an exceptionally great one. His keen insight led him to pick men who got along with one another. His genuine interest in every problem and activity made everyone feel valued: if he had finished quizzing Silas Wright about abstruse geomagnetic experiments, or chiding the biologists for not being clear about what they meant by degenerate form, he would turn around and start a conversation with Trigger Gran about Norwegian literature or politics. The reserved and brittle man of myth was actually exactly the opposite. If you read the diaries and letters of his men, even the private writings into which people naturally spill their irritation or anger, what you find for the most part is loyalty based on admiration"

Yes!!! I love when other people get it! Scott did make mistakes, but so did Amundsen, which usually get left out because he "won" and was "better prepared." Well..Amundsen forgot to bring a shovel, had arguments with his men, and left for the Pole way too early, causing him to get caught in a blizzard and having to turn back..so he wasn't perfect either lol. I really loved reading that passage, knowing I'm not alone <3 (I might be a bit passionate about this subject LOL)

I'm always amazed at how awesome my coworkers are..I had lunch late, so I was thrown off my routine and super hungry, which makes my brain malfunction lol. I made a mistake on the register and kept trying to talk to Paulette, but I just couldn't make it make sense haha! Paulette knows that happens to me though, and is amazingly patient..she also saw when I got back on track, and I was like "about time, right?" and she said "no, I only concentrate on what you do right, not wrong." Wow..she really is amazing!!

2. What would you sarcastically like to thank your body for? Having migraines after doing something strenuous, like big sales at work. I love feeling like my head is being hit with a hammer!
3. What would you sarcastically like to thank your neighbors for? Watching something loud. I hate peace and quiet!
4. What would you sarcastically like to thank the internet for? Having flame wars over nothing, and being mean because they don't support the same person you do. Who wants to get along??
5. What would you sarcastically like to thank November for? Getting dark at 3 and 4..I love feeling like it's 10 PM at 6! (That was kinda fun LOL)

Here's something amusing I found yesterday: Fake subtitles of library books. I very briefly wondered if The Worst Journey in the World would be on there, but I was like "yeah right, what are the chances?" Imagine my COMPLETE shock when I clicked to the third page, and there it was!! Awesome. :P Awesome library, wherever it is lol (funnily enough, A Walk to the Pole, the book next to The Worst Journey in the pic, was the book that finally tipped me over into obsession haha)

One thing I hate about Prozac is that it's hard to sleep..a couple months ago mom bought me something called Hyland's Calms Forte Sleep Aid Tablets, for natural relief of tension and sleeplessness. I thought I'd give it a try, and OMG, it is AMAZING, 100 times better than melatonin. I can actually sleep for hours at a time (well, unless Abby wakes me up lol, but I can go back to sleep easily). I'll wake up and think it's 5 or 6 or something, and am shocked when I see it's almost 9! If anyone has problems with sleeplessness, you should definitely try it..it works great!

Yesterday mom and I saw Thor: Ragnarok. It was kinda silly (I read 80% of the dialogue was ad-libbed, which I definitely believed), but OMG the fight scenes with Immigrant Song playing were EPIC. Cate Blanchett absolutely slayed playing the evil sister Hela, and Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are always nice to look at LOL (when Chris came on screen mom was like "you only wanted to see the movie for him!" haha). It took me forever to figure out the head guard guy was Faramir in Lord of the Rings lol. I love Stan Lee's cameos too. It's cool how all the different movies connect with each other (like Thor mentioned the Avengers, for one). They're fun to watch!

And the movies in the previews?
Jumanji: Ooo, that looks fun! I've liked the Rock ever since seeing him in the Mummy and Scorpion King
Pacific Rim: Uprising: *yawns* The song in the trailer amused me though :P
Black Panther: *yaaawns*

Downsizing: What.. O___o
The New Mutants: NOOONOOONO NOPE NOOOOO *hides under the chair*
Wonder: That looks sad, but heartwarming

I don't mind a few previews, but SEVEN (that I can remember)?? Really? It made the actual movie seem really long lol

I really hate Firefox's new update :/

Today I was looking through this book on mountains and for some reason decided to look at the inside of the back cover..there was a picture of a ton of polar exploration books on a shelf, and there were two copies of The Worst Journey in the World in the picture!! On this day, 105 years ago, the bodies of Scott, Wilson, and Birdie were found by Cherry and other members of the expedition. What really touches me about it is that Scott's hand was resting on Wilson's bag..they lived as friends and died as friends, and they didn't regret it. He was right in his Message to the Public when he said "Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman." The tale definitely tells about all those things, even though he didn't live. I will always be amazed at how well everyone got along with each other. When they got back to the hut they erected a cross nearby with the names of the lost party (along with Oates and Evans, who died earlier on the trip back) and "to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield," from the poem Ulysses by Lord Tennyson, which I think was Cherry's idea. RIP to some of the greatest guys who ever lived, you'll never be forgotten <3 (It's weird to think their bodies are still buried somewhere on the Ross Ice Shelf O_o)

Chloe is very wise and a great advocate for autism!! I get the "you don't look like you have autism" all the time too. It's a part of my identity as well..even though it can be hard, I just wouldn't be the same without it! Like her, I constantly fidget as well. I feel so anxious if I don't Her inflatable vest is so cool! I noticed when I went to the dentist a couple days ago, when they put that heavy blanket thing (?) over me when getting x-rays, I immediately felt calmer and so cozy. I literally LOLed at the "open the door" response, that is such an awesomely autistic thing to say haha. I definitely added her on Facebook, especially because she will interact with you! Keep being awesome, Chloe :D

Yesterday mom and I saw Geostorm..it wasn't my favorite disaster movie, but it was entertaining at least, and I hadn't seen Gerard Butler in a movie in awhile haha (I had a huge crush on him after I saw Phantom of the Opera :P). The calving glacier in the beginning was cool lol. Before the movie the trailer for Justice League came on..I love superhero movies anyway, but the shot of the guy in a body of water with icebergs sold it for me LOL

When I got up this morning the roads looked wet, but I didn't expect it to be all-out RAINING. Usually by now it's cold enough for it to be snowing. It was very slippery walking to work. Crazy weather! People still came to buy books though, which always amazes me when there's bad weather lol

Last week at work our carpets got cleaned, so yesterday Denise moved some things around so we could get at least partway in the back. Me and Shirley were insanely excited to see that this morning haha (two weeks of squeezing past boxes and stuff got old quickly :P). Denise wished she could have seen our faces, she knew we'd be happy (she was ordered to sleep in after picking up Paulette at the airport at like 1 in the morning). It took awhile, but we got all the books that were in boxes and tubs back on the "to clean" shelf and moved the cleaning table back to where it normally is. It was so relieving for all of us to have something get back close to normal again. There's still a lot of work to be done, but we can't do it till they replace the drywall, and we're not sure when that will happen. Clearing up the cleaning area was a relief though!

One change that's going to happen is my office is going to be in a different spot (that'll be strange, I've been in that spot almost 10 years!). Denise knows change is hard for me, so she gave me plenty of warning. I have to say, Denise is one of the few people that totally understands me (mom and Dana are a couple others), which is absolutely amazing. She said she doesn't see my weaknesses as limitations, just things to improve on and work around, which is incredibly awesome..there has been more than one person that has said "that's not an excuse!" when I tried telling them how my brain works. She's very respectful of my interests, and doesn't scoff whenever I mention Cherry (I had a coworker who would roll her eyes and tell me I "wasn't living in the real world" whenever I mentioned him O_o). I absolutely feel comfortable in her presence, and I confide in her a lot (she gives great advice!). It really does make all the difference in the world to have someone like Denise around..she's a great boss, and an even better friend. <3 Thanks Denise!
