I think there were around 8,000 ducks LOL. I didn't win anything, but I'll always remember the year I won $500 when my duck was picked at random (the Wild Duck) haha

A duology (1): The Bright & the Pale by Jessica Rubinkowski (Mar 28-Apr 2)
A duology (2): Wrath & Mercy Jessica Rubinkowski (Apr 2-6). These would have been great if the main character hadn't been so angry and reckless and annoying all the time :/

A book by a Pacific Islander author: The Girl from Everywhere by Heidi Heilig (Apr 8-14)

A book set in Victorian times: Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne (Apr 15-19). I love that part of it took place in Iceland!

A Hugo Award winner: Dune by Frank Herbert (Apr 20-30). Now I'm ready for the second part of the movie lol

30. April 30 is "Hairstyle Appreciation Day". How would you describe your hairstyle? Long, and desperately needs a trim haha

May 1. Is it more or less difficult to be successful in the modern world than it was in the past (10, 50, 100, or 1,000 years ago)? Hmm..it's probably somewhat easier now with the Internet and Zoom and stuff..

Today I went kayaking on the Chena River with mom, Jo, Ryan and their friend Daniel (along with everyone else in Fairbanks :P). It was rather warm, but still a nice day to be on the water. It's always interesting seeing the houses and stuff along the river you don't see from the road, and I love seeing and hearing the birds. It took about 2 1/2-3 hours from where we started, and the take-out spot is pretty close to the house, which is cool. Someone had their pugs there, and I tried telling mom that breeders made their face squished on purpose, but said "they-they do that on pur-pur-purpose." Not again!! D: I was really tired, but still..ugh. At least everyone was distracted :P

Here are some pics!

Yesterday mom and I went kayaking down the Chena River with Bonnie and Jeanie (mom used to work with her). It was a nice day, though HOT, and everyone else in Fairbanks seemed to have the same idea as us haha. We floated from the Wendell St. Bridge to Pike's Landing, where we had dinner..at 10 PM, but who cares, it doesn't get dark lol (I'm sure they get river traffic late like that all the time..it felt more like 6 or 7 than 10 PM though!). I also found a geocache on an island, which obviously you need a boat to get to or wait for the river to freeze (I guess you could swim too, but that water's too cold for me :P). It was appropriately named "Pirate Denny's Last Stand"..I kinda felt like a pirate searching for treasure on an island haha. It was a lovely night..I love Fairbanks' summer days!!

The Moose Creek Dam was activated this morning to restrict the flow of water through downtown Fairbanks. It's the first time in six years the flood control project has been activated.

Flooding continues in the Chena, Chatanika and Salcha rivers. Some roads in Two Rivers flooded overnight and are impassible.

Water is still running across Chena Hot Springs Road at 36.9 Mile and may be impassible for some vehicles. Caution is urged. The Chena River is also carrying a significant load of sticks and debris, according to the National Weather Service.

More rain is expected today. Another 1/2 inch could fall over the region before clearing on Sunday

Wow..I do remember when the flood control project was activated in 2008. Yesterday when I saw the river it was almost at the overlook thing downtown. It's supposed to rain again next week too. Ughh..so over it now

The Water People by Joe Simpson (Apr 27-May 5)
Dead Lucky: Life After Death on Mount Everest by Lincoln Hall (May 6-16)
Breaking Point: Challenge on Alaska's Mt. Hunter by Glenn Randall (May 16-20)
Beyond the Limits: A Woman's Triumph on Everest by Stacy Allison (May 21-31)

The rafting/geocaching on the Chena River was kinda fun. It would have been more fun if it hadn't been cold, rainy and windy most of the time. It started off warm and sunny (70 degrees!) but by the end it dropped down to 44! I was FREEZING, even with my fleece jacket and rain coat. Oh well, it was still cool caching with other people and seeing what was along the river. We saw a golden eagle and two moose! Aww. I think we found 11 or 12 caches? I still need to log them haha. I was SO glad when we got back to the cabin..someone lit a fire and it felt AMAZING. It also started raining and didn't stop..I'm glad we got back when we did haha. We had a nice dinner, then went home. Being in a warm bed felt amazing :P

2. What is your favorite adult snack? Chex Mix, popcorn, etc
3. What is your favorite flavor of Jell-O? Strawberry or cherry
4. What is your favorite ice cream topping? Chocolate sauce and whipped cream
5. Do you eat maraschino cherries? Red or green? No

Tomorrow my parents and I are going on a canoe/kayak/rafting trip down the upper Chena River with a group of other geocachers. We're gonna just float downriver and find caches along the way (someone hid a whole bunch for this event). After rafting there's gonna be a campfire potluck at a cabin..mmmm. Sounds like fun!! Some people are camping overnight, but I doubt dad would want to do that :P

Krystin and I are doing a photo challenge on Facebook..yesterday's subject was the sunset. Well mom and I were at this meeting with the guy who publishes all the Alaska geocaches and has hidden a lot around Fairbanks (he lives in Anchorage though..it was nice to finally meet him!). He talked about his job and the rules of hiding a cache. It was like 9:30 when we left, which was perfect cause the sun was just setting! Mom had the great idea to take the pic from the bridge..it was such a nice sunset! It must have known about the contest. ;) Haha. We also found a cache on the bridge haha

I'm so fascinated by everyone's reports of Hurricane Sandy! So crazy. There was also a 7.7 earthquake in Canada..I'd take that over a hurricane :P (The closest I've come was seeing the outer bands of Hurricane Rita in Texas..that was pretty awesome)

68. Hero )

Would you rather eat three earthworms or wear a necklace made of them on your wedding day? The necklace..it could be a bug themed wedding!

Today's trivia: If you were in a commercial airliner traveling at average speeds, it would take 2.5 hours to fly across Hurricane Sandy's diameter (thanks [livejournal.com profile] shesingsnow!!)

The Northern Lights were out last night! They were pretty nice..bright green tinged with pink and dancing lazily. They were straight overhead too (ow my neck). It was windy and FREEZING though. Then I woke up in the middle of the night and happened to look out the window..they were still out! They were moving faster than before..awesomee. I'm glad mom's house is like the perfect place to watch them haha :D

And here's a video of a guy trying to drive through the Bentley Mall:

Apparently he was on drugs and when the police questioned him he thought he could "drive through the doors on one side, drive through the mall and drive through the doors on the other side." Nicee :P

There was ice floating down the river yesterday..it looked like breakup haha

Yesterday we finally went boating on the river since dad brought the boat from Texas! (And that was April haha) The first half of the day was REALLY nice and sunny but by the time we got out there the smoke had moved in. It was really cool seeing the smoke plume from it (it's not threatening anything. I can smell it today too). It was still nice though. We went from this boat ramp by KFC to the Wendell Street Bridge. We had to be careful cause the river is pretty shallow since it hasn't been raining much. We saw lots of wildlife! Two beavers (so cuteee!), a bald eagle (!), a couple cats, etc. The eagle looked so cool. :D I have pics too

I've lost 4 pounds since starting Weight Watchers :D

Yesterday was the rubber duckie race on the river! Didn't win again, but it's still fun haha. There was also a festival (this is all part of Golden Days, commemorating when gold was found it Fairbanks). It was reallly warm haha. We got food, looked at the stands and went in a couple shops before the race. Forest fires had flared up on the flats and sent this huge cloud of smoke over Fairbanks. The clouds looked SO awesome haha. We drove to the ridge on the Parks Highway and had a pretty good view of it up there. Here are some pics..

Yesterday for dinner we took the sternwheeler Tanana out for a cruise and dinner on the river! I was definitely surprised haha. The person at the counter (who I later learned was the captain) said there was just enough water in the river to get by..nicee haha. The food was yummy too. Mom got me a cat paw print with black diamonds in it! Woww haha. The boat stopped near the confluence of the Chena and the Tanana (it may have been too shallow to get closer) and turned around. On the way back we visited with the captain..he was so hot haha. He had long brown hair and a nice white shirt on..yummm. He let mom drive the boat part of the way! She was good haha. The boat was actually scraping the bottom of the river it was so shallow..yikes haha. It was a lovely evening. I might eventually steal mom's pics from the night too..
