Aunt Cindy and Uncle Dean had to put their dog Bandit to sleep yesterday. They had him a LONG time..I remember them having him as a little kid. They're probably really sad..aw. He had a good life though

Yesterday we learned that Bandit was bleeding internally, so we made the decision to let him go. We had been nursing his health for about 9 months, but even that was not enough time to prepare us for the final step. It is never easy, but he was over 15 years old, so we feel blessed to have had him for as long as we did. He moved with us from Alabama to Chicago to London, back to Chicago and then to Houston. He made friends where ever he went and he certainly brought us tons of joy.

We were laughing last night about his many antics (which weren’t so funny at the time). He destroyed untold numbers of long plastic tubes filled with water, which were used to hold down the HUGE tarp that covered our pool when we lived in Alabama. Bandit, of course, thought they were there for his amusement. Anything delivered to our porch was fair game as far as Bandit was concerned. That included things like the phone book (picture thousands of pages strewn all over the yard and in the bushes), golf clubs (the biggest, best bone we ever ‘gave’ to him!), a new dress ordered from a catalogue (perfect for tug-a-war), and even Christmas packages. He felt he needed to add his touch to any changes we made to the yard. We planted a weeping willow, which he promptly removed – apparently it didn’t look good there. We spent hours stringing Christmas lights around the bushes, which he pulled off (and of course, destroyed!) For years I kept all of the ruined strands of lights, which I labelled ‘lights by Bandit’. The light bulbs were, after all, still good. I think we finally trashed them in the last move.

I guess it is not nice to tell stories on him now that he is gone, but they do make us laugh. As you all know, he was a stray. We say he chose us and we are glad he did. He crept into our home and into our hearts and he made us smile each and every day. That, my friends, is what dogs do.
