Ughh I changed my LJ to the "new" design hoping that would solve the Photobucket problem, but it didn't..I don't really like it, but I guess I have to live with it now. :/ My pictures work other places, like Dreamwidth, so LJ must have changed something..weird

I keep meeting the coolest people lately..a customer came in wanting to donate books, and Paulette asked what kind of books he had. He was like "Alaska, climbing, polar exploration.." Well THAT caught my attention lol..I asked which ones and he said "all of them! Like a first edition of Nansen's book with color plates." Ooooh! I asked if he had The Worst Journey in the World and he was like "Apsley Cherry-Garrard?" ("SQUEE *nods excitedly*") "Yeah, that book got me to the right place in Antarctica." He had gone to Scott's hut!! OMG. OMG. Jealous! I MUST get there someday! I'd love to browse that guy's library, it sounds amazing :D

Speaking of Cherry, I think this is my least favorite pic of him:

His expression makes me shiver!! Haha

There's a nasty cold going around that seems to hang on to whoever has it..mom and some of my coworkers have had it, including Denise, who never gets sick (I about died when she said she was getting sick D:). I better take some supplements, because I REALLY don't want to get sick, especially since this one sounds super rough D:

Today I met the sci-fi author Ian C. Esselmont! He paid with a credit card and I thought I recognized his name..so I was like "you're an author right?" and he was like, "yep, I write sci-fi books! I'd sign one for you if you had any of them." Whoa! I Googled him after he left and it said he's married to Gerri Brightwell, who is also an author (which I knew) that shops at the bookstore all the time. Double whoa! I did see Gerri, but the store was too busy to focus on just one person lol. I totally didn't know she was married to another author, whose books I've definitely shelved in the bookstore. Wow! That was really cool lol. You never know who you'll meet at the little bookstore in Fairbanks, Alaska :D

How cool is this: Gulkana Glacier in Interior Alaska is a testing ground for equipment intended for use in space. Wow!! That is super cool! (I've hiked on Gulkana Glacier before, so it's even more special to me lol)

I really wish I knew why Photobucket pictures aren't working for me on LJ (they work on other sites!). It's upsetting to me, since I have hundreds (thousands??) of pictures on here, and replacing them would take forever. I emailed LJ and Photobucket, in the hope something can be fixed. Guess I'll have to use Flickr for now..

5. What’s something you’ve purchased recently that was lower in price than usual? Books that were on sale

Grandpa and his house are ok, phew..there were just a bunch of branches that needed to be cleaned up. Luckily the hurricane lost power when it got that far. Speaking of Crystal River, today I checked out a customer that just moved here from Florida..I asked where and she said "about 100 miles north of Tampa." I told her my grandpa lives in Crystal River, a she looked at me in astonishment and said, "that's where I moved from!! I was born and raised there!" Haha wow..it's such a small world :P

Today at work I was checking a customer out..she paid with a credit card, and I saw her last name was Cherry. I couldn't help saying "oh my gosh!" to myself lol, and she was like "what?" I told her there was a famous explorer I like with that name, and I expected her to look at me like I was insane or something, but I didn't expect THIS: "oh, Apsley Cherry-Garrard? I'm distantly related to him! My grandma used to tell me stories about him"

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!
OMG
OMG
NO WAY

I completely freaked out and just stood there in awe LOL. A distant relative of Cherry lives in Fairbanks, Alaska!??! What are the chances of that?? She said she had read The Worst Journey in the World and Sarah Wheeler's biography of him, and that her grandparents had gone to Antarctica. OMG. She must have seen how shocked I was, because she was like "I hope you don't have to use your brain now" LOL. Wow! I went back to tell Denise ("you'll never believe who I just saw!!!") and she said I HAD to call mom because I was just vibrating and she didn't want me to explode LOL (I was literally walking around in circles haha!). Mom was disappointed I didn't get her phone number lol..I hope she comes in again so we can talk more! That is absolutely amazing and completely made my day..wow!

Sometimes I like to go back and read my childhood journal, and in one entry (in 2003 I think) I wrote down some of my favorite songs at that time. I thought it would be fun to go back and listen to them and share some of them here:

"America AO" by Aaron Carter. Haha wow, it's so weird listening to these songs again..I remember when he was popular. :P Honestly, I still really like this song LOL, it's so catchy and fun!

"Don't Stop Movin'" By S Club 7. Catchy!

"Floorfiller" by A*Teens. OMG this takes me right back to middle school..I was OBSESSED with this song haha. To this day, I still sometimes think of this song when I hear the word "corner" lol ("something's out of order, people in the corners..")

a couple more )

"We Didn't Start the Fire" helps me solve crosswords! The hint was something about a failed car, and I just knew it was "Edsel" ("Edsel is a no-go"). Thanks, Billy Joel :P

This weekend my brother and I played Mario Party 2 on Nintendo64..the game came out in 1999, 18 years ago, and the console itself is probably older than that..I'm amazed it still works! The old graphics we thought were high-tech back then are amusing LOL

Yesterday at the hotel mom turned on the TV and discovered the hotel had Netflix! I was looking away when she was picking a show, but when it came on, I could immediately tell Sam, the narrator of the show (Atypical), was high-functioning autistic. Intriguing, but THEN he kept describing how much he loved Antarctica and penguins! My jaw dropped to the floor..wow, of all things! How had I not heard of the show before?! And THEN he kept making references to Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen, and I was just like *IS DEAD* (I was waiting for him to mention Cherry, then I really would have freaked out lol.) Needless to say, we binged-watched the entire first season haha. Watching shows or movies with people with autism is hard for me, maybe because I'm reminded of myself and I'm constantly thinking "is that how I seem to people??" Sam would say stuff like "that's not what I expected a dorm to smell like," which is absolutely something I would say. When he was upset he would recite the names of the Antarctic penguins, which is like how I say "stick it" to myself when I'm in a hard spot. I very rarely cry when I watch movies or TV shows, but the scene where Sam had a breakdown on a bus and his mom comforted him definitely made me cry (the movie Temple Grandin had me bawling lol). Maybe because it's extremely real to me..or something like that? Sam also said autistic people have more empathy than "regular" people..I've heard that on a YouTube video as well, and that is DEFINITELY true, at least for me. People's emotions can definitely rub off on me. I hope there's a second season..there must be!! Haha

The drive home from Anchorage was definitely nicer than the drive down..it rained a little, but nothing like Friday, and eventually the clouds parted above the mountains and it was insanely beautiful lol. Alaska is beautiful even when it's cloudy, so when it's sunny you're just blown away. When we arrived at Fairbanks it just felt..like a warm comforting blanket was tossed over me. I think Fairbanks is just the right size..Anchorage is too big for me (and you spend FOREVER at traffic lights). Ahh, cozy Fairbanks. :D Weirdly, I didn't catch any new Pokemon in Anchorage (and I only saw one in the "nearby" corner of the screen), but as soon as I checked in Wasilla, one appeared! I also caught a Butterfree when we had dinner at Denali Park, which I had before only one of..I'm really surprised there weren't more in Anchorage! It's always a little weird returning to "reality" after a trip lol

some pics from the drive home )
glacier_kitty: (mt. hayes)
On Friday mom and I drove to Anchorage..the weather wasn't too bad till we passed Denali Park, then it rained most of the rest of the way. There was lots of fresh snow on the mountains, which looked cool contrasted against the red fall colors of the tundra. I devoured another entire Flavia de Luce novel (which again mentioned glaciers, and "the Pole" haha..who would have known??). Our hotel is by the float pond..a little noisy, but cool seeing the planes take off. It's weird how Anchorage doesn't exactly feel like Alaska..when I see the mountains I just want to jump over them and see the Glacier Paradise on the other side haha

Yesterday mom went to a bunch of quilt shops, and I went to Title Wave Books (yay!). I miiight have bought too many polar exploration books LOL (my basket was so heavy, and I hadn't even looked at the fiction yet!). The coolest thing I found was Emperors of the Ice, a kids novel based on The Worst Journey in the World, told in Cherry's voice! (I about fell over when I turned the book over and saw a giant pic of Cherry on the cover LOL..I had to hug it :P) It's been on my Amazon wishlist for awhile, so I'm glad it was there. I also found Seven Years in Tibet by Heinrich Harrier, one of the first men to successfully climb the North Face of the Eiger..I'd been looking for it for years! It was funny..I asked if they had it and she brought me to the shelf across from the polar books, where I'd already been like five times haha..how did I miss it?? We found some geocaches, relaxed at the hotel, and then went to Olive Garden..yummm. *drools* Then we did more relaxing at the hotel lol

Today I met up with Aimee ([livejournal.com profile] hopefulspirit)! We've been LJ friends for years, but this is the first time we've met in person. Yay, I love meeting LJ friends lol. We had lunch at Yak and Yeti, a Nepalese restaurant next to Title Wave Books. It was cool talking with her. :) We also went to the mall for a little bit, and got some nice smelling things at Bath and Body Works (I have to be careful though, some scents give me a headache) and some smoothies/milkshakes. We also took her geocaching for the first time..there were some cool ones for her first time caching, like a bird's next. I squeed when I came across someone's Maine Coon cat LOL..I called to it and it let me pet it. :D Maine Coons are awesome lol. After that we parted ways..we'll have to get together again sometime! Here's a pic of us!

Yay hehe

Tomorrow we drive back to Fairbanks..maybe I'll devour the next Flavia de Luce novel on the way back :P
glacier_kitty: (bookworm patronus)
Mom and I are going to Anchorage tomorrow for Labor Day weekend (yay!), so I'm going to do the books I read for August today:

High Country by Nevada Barr (July 29-Aug. 1)
John Muir and the Ice That Started a Fire: How a Visionary and the Glaciers of Alaska Changed America (Aug. 2-7. I loved reading this after going to Glacier Bay!)
The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag by Alan Bradley (Aug. 7-10)
A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley (Aug. 11-15)
I Am Half-Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley (Aug. 15-17)
Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard Atwater (Aug. 18. One of the DUMBEST books I've ever read..no zoo would just casually send a penguin to someone's house in the mail!)
South with Scott by Admiral Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Evans (Aug. 21-27. And I thought "Apsley George Benet Cherry-Garrard" was a mouthful O_o)
Speaking from Among the Bones by Alan Bradley (Aug. 28-30)

Woohoo, 8 books, my second highest month! As you can see, I'm devouring Alan Bradley's Flavia de Luce mysteries lol..every one of them has mentioned Antarctica and/or has described something as glacial. I love how spunky Flavia is too..impossible not to love :P

I wish people wouldn't talk so badly about Robert Falcon Scott..he did make mistakes, but after reading multiple sources, I can say for a fact Scott's men looked up to him, and Scott cared for them as well. I'm always amazed at how well everyone got along with each other. I've read other books about better prepared expeditions, but they just fell apart because the men hated each other. And how can I not love Cherry after reading something like this??: "A fifth pony was sacrificed to the hungry dogs--'Michael,' of whom Cherry-Garrard had only good words to say--but then the altruistic Cherry only spoke good words." *swoons* I love reading about Cherry from the other expedition members lol

It'll be nice to get out of town for a few days (when I asked Denise if I could go, she was like "yes, you work too much!" haha!) We're staying at a hotel at the float pond (we got the last room! Oops lol)..it seemed nice anyway. I'll hopefully get to meet [livejournal.com profile] hopefulspirit too!

A couple days ago I was trying to use my phone, but it was really bright out, and it's super hard trying to see the screen with transition lenses (taking off my glasses doesn't help either, then I really can't see lol :P), and somehow I called Dana! We both thought it was hilarious, and it's always nice to hear her cheerful voice :D

Today's trivia: When you eat figs, technically you're also eating wasps. Figs are pollinated by female wasps, who lose their wings in the process of pollination. The wasp has no way to get out of the fig and so they die inside, and then the fig's enzymes break down and dissolve the wasp (O__O)

glacier_kitty: (glacier - glacier bay)
Kathy came in today, and after gathering up courage (confrontations are scary!!), I told her that I've always appreciated what she's done for me, whether for a ride home, lunch, etc, but it's just hard for me to express it. I told her that even though I was upset, I'm glad she told me so I can express it better (I said next time I will definitely make it obvious to her). She looked very touched and gave me a big hug and said "I'm glad we're still friends!" and I said "me too! Sorry for freaking out on you." She was like "that's all behind us, now we can move ahead." I said "we're good!" and she said the same. Phew!! I'm so glad there's no hard feelings between us, and I'm glad I told her I appreciated her, because I definitely do and didn't mean to hurt her feelings. She's such a great friend! I've been practicing with Denise lol..we like to get smoothies a couple times a week for lunch. It took me like five minutes to get there (my hands were shaking haha!), but I said "I appreciated the nice walk with you" and she said "thanks! I know how hard this is for you and I'm proud that you're trying so hard." Aww. She's a great friend as well! I'm so lucky and glad I have people who understand and support me <3

I meet the most..interesting people walking to work..today this homeless guy that had been digging in the trash was like "Do you have burlap bag? Burlap bag? Burlap bag!!" and I was just like "...no" and as I left he kept saying something about the Lord smiting people who don't help others..or something like that..and something about the Lord giving people burlap bags?? Uncomfortable, but I still felt bad for him..there was nothing I could do though :(
