Last night Jo went to take Sid for a walk, and texted everyone saying the Northern Lights were out! It was -20 something out, but I hadn't seen them in a long time, so I quickly bundled up and went outside. Here are a couple pics!

Overhead! The moon was really bright though, and probably made them less colorful

My phone takes better pictures than my "regular" cameras ever did! Weird. They weren't active enough to stay outside in the cold for too long, but it was still cool seeing them again :D

Last night I watched another bad disaster movie, Arctic Blast. You know it's going to be interesting with a synopsis like this: "when a solar eclipse sends a colossal blast of super chilled air towards the earth, it then sets off a catastrophic chain of events that threatens to engulf the world in ice and begin a new Ice Age." Haha what?? That's..not how solar eclipses work LOL. And apparently you can fix a hole in the ozone with lightning?? So dumb lol. One of the actresses kinda looked like Dana!

18. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
19. Seven Samurai (1954)
20. Se7en (1995)
the rest )

If I counted right, I've seen 60 1/2 of them! Cool lol

Mom's coming home tonight!! I bet she'll be happy to be home (Greyboy will be so happy he will probably drool all over her LOL). I can't wait to go to dinner with her again, and shop for a four-poster bed haha

6. How many first cousins do you have? Hmm..not sure..a bunch??

7. What’s the longest period of time you’ve gone without sleep? Maybe around 24 hours

8. Did the house you grew up in have a big yard? It was kinda big..I loved all the trees and playing in the pool lol

9. What has been the most difficult class you’ve ever taken? Any math class haha

Today's trivia: Lt. Col. "Mad" Jack Churchill was only British soldier in WWII known to have killed an enemy soldier with a longbow. "Mad Jack" insisted on going into battle armed with both a medieval bow and a claymore sword
glacier_kitty: (Default)
A book about a social justice issue: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey (Oct. 1-5). Challenge finished! P-p-poor Billy Bibbit :(

The Arctic Fury by Greer MacAllister (Oct. 6-16). I'd been dying to read this since it came out, and had to read it first after finishing the challenge. It wasn't quite as good as I hoped, but still an interesting read (a woman expedition looking for the Franklin Expedition, which didn't go very well)

All Systems Red by Martha Wells (Oct. 16-18). The "Murderbot" main character was too lazy to murder, and liked to watch TV instead: "I could have become a mass murderer after I hacked my governor module, but then I realized I could access the combined feed of entertainment channels carried on the company satellites. It had been well over 35,000 hours or so since then, with still not much murdering, but probably, I don't know, a little under 35,000 hours of movies, serials, books, plays, and music consumed. As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure." LOL awesome :P (Denise loves this series too lol)

Ordinary Wolves by Seth Kantner (Oct. 19-25). Donna loves this book, but I just found it depressing :/

Island on Fire: The Extraordinary Story of a Forgotten Volcano That Changed the World by Alexandra Witze (Oct. 26-28)

Billy Budd by Herman Melville (Oct. 29-31). Well THAT was depressing, and the movie was even worse..Billy was so cool and positive! Evil master-at-arms using Billy's stutter against him! (He pretty much couldn't talk at all if he was upset enough.) And I see why people have trouble getting through Melville's books..wow O_o

This weekend I saw Dune with Ryan and Jo..it was pretty good, though a bit long. I kinda want to read the book now. Jo and I were drooling over Timothée Chalamet LOL..yum. :P It was also pretty warm this weekend because of a Chinook..temps were in the 40s, 20 degrees above normal! The last time Fairbanks reached 40 degrees on Halloween was in 1995..wow. Most of the snow has melted again haha..crazy

I am home! Yesterday, before we left the B&B, I left little notes around for the next person to find..like I put "I can see clearly now the dust is gone" by the window, "brrr, it's cold in here!" in the freezer, "best bed ever!!" in my room, and there was this decoration thing with a lid and I put the note in it with a date on it, so whoever finds it knows how long it's been in there..it was really fun haha. Since it was dark on the drive into Yuma, we saw what we had missed before, a little canyon while crossing over the mountains..cool! We stayed at a tiny B&B in Phoenix near the airport..the fold-out bed was one of the most uncomfortable beds I'd ever slept in, but at least it was only for one night. We had dinner in downtown Phoenix and then wandered around for awhile..it seemed to have a vibrant nightlife! Then all too soon is was time for bed..it was a fun trip though!

We had to get up at 5 something today, ugh (why am I always cold when I get up that early?). Ryan was grouchy, but not as grouchy as the lady at the ticket counter, who was yelling in her phone about how she could possibly get her two-year-old to wear a mask, and was like "call 911, call security! There's no security on this floor? What's wrong with you guys?? I'm gonna get a lawyer for this!" and on and on. The person checking us in was really uncomfortable, and would look over at her and sigh. I'd be SO embarrassed if I made a scene like that..her poor kid was just standing there, dazed. I don't know what the outcome was, but I imagine it wasn't pretty. The flights were fine..I watched Die Hard with a Vengeance and some of The Last Castle..I kept peeking out the window so I wouldn't miss the glaciers. It was cloudy at first, and my weather magic worked again because it was clear over the glaciers! Too bad I was right next to the wing, but I did get some pics. Always love seeing the glacial wonderland. <3 Both Greyboy and Abby were very happy to see me haha. It's always hard coming back to "reality" after vacation though :P

some glacier pics! )

15. What is one thing you've realized or discovered lately? That I really, really want a four-poster bed haha..it made me feel secure and cozy!

16. Which family member did you inherit your hair color from? Mom..people say our hair is exactly the same lol
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Yesterday we did go up to the Mogollon Rim, and went on a trail mom and Ryan went on when Aunt Cindy and Uncle Dean were here a couple weeks ago. It was really pretty, and a nice day! I love the ponderosa pines up there. <3 After that we went home, had dinner, and played Betrayal at House on the Hill. Christi had never played, and she thought it was fun! Me and Jo have had fun looking at my old school stuff, and he laughed SO hard at "me encanta Viggo Mortensen" written on my Spanish folder, instead of regular homework haha

Today was gorgeous too! We didn't do anything super exciting lol, except for Christi making her awesome spaghetti and meatballs..delicious!! I watched Big Hero Six with mom and Jo (I wanted to finish it! Haha). Such a great movie!! I can totally relate to Baymax when he's tired LOL, I can't speak properly!! :P

Tomorrow we're taking Christi to Phoenix for her flight home, and then driving to Yuma. It's been really fun hanging out with Christi, though my social battery is very tired LOL. It'll be cool to see a new place and hopefully see Dana again! (I think Yuma is almost three hours from Phoenix)

pics from the last couple days )

9. Do you have any embarrassing usernames? I have one called "shiny-italy" I made years ago, which makes me roll my eyes LOL

10. Have you ever did well on a test when you didn’t study? I think so..
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Yesterday I went to the movies for the first time since January of last year! After our usual Wednesday dinner Jo was like "wanna see the new Marvel movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings?" Sure, I love Marvel movies!! Ryan and mom went too, even though they're "eh" about those kind of movies. It was really fun, I definitely missed that! The movie was really good too, even Ryan thought it was "better than most Marvel movies" haha. The martial arts were beautifully done! The trailer of Moonfall (I think it was called that) looked terrifying O_o

Ryan and mom do composting, so Ryan said to save cardboard stuff over the winter to..feed it?? Whatever they do to it LOL. I had a box, and mom was going to take me to the store today (to stock up since she's going to Payson on Saturday), so I was determined to redeem myself after yesterday and say to her "this is for your compost!" I practiced after I got home from work..it was very hard at first, it literally felt like a barrier I had to break through, but finally I was able to say it, so for like 10 minutes I was saying "com-POST" to myself haha! When I gave her the box she said "oh, for the compost?" and I said "compost!! *BEAMS*" Yay! Haha. I was like "you have no idea how many times I had to say that to myself! Whew!" haha. By the time we got to the store I couldn't say it anymore (no one can see you talking to yourself when you're wearing a mask LOL), but I was still proud. :D Weird she didn't mention my tired stuttering on the way home though :P

9. What architectural style was your childhood home? Uh..a normal brick house?? Haha

Today's trivia: The Ancient Romans used to drop a piece of toast into their wine for good health - hence why we "raise a toast"
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Me and Ryan and Jo got our second shots on Saturday! We had trouble sleeping that night, and all of us felt achy and headachey on Sunday, but Motrin helped with that. Hopefully we're now well protected against covid!

A few minutes ago, the person who lives below me knocked on my door and thanked me for being a quiet neighbor! I try hard, so that was nice. He was worried he was too loud, but no, I never hear him. Aaaand then he basically asked me out, wondering if we could hang out at his apartment and drink juice..of course he had an ulterior motive LOL. Those situations are always so awkward! I was like "uhh..maybe after covid is over?" I really just want to be left alone, but at least I know I'm a quiet neighbor :P

It's finally gotten into the 40s, and everything is melting like crazy! It's nice not to have to have all that winter gear on now haha

Dear whoever made the movie Greenland: it did not escape my notice that you were 100% filming in ICELAND. Despite its name, Greenland is NOT lush and green, and the waterfall the plane flew over was definitely Skógafoss. Nice try though LOL :P

3. Have you seen a doc in the past nine months? Yep
4. What’s got you feeling grumpy lately? Waking up tired haha
5. What’s making you happy today? Working again, yay! It was definitely tiring going back yesterday though..to be expected after not doing anything for 2 1/2 weeks. :P Everyone was happy to see me again, which was nice lol. Hopefully I'll get less tired every day!

I watched a lot of movies while convalescing! Apocalypse Now (weird O_o), Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Hotel Rwanda, A Bridge Too Far, The Great Escape, Deepwater Horizon, U-571, 500 MPH Storm (yep, it was as dumb as it sounds :P), Beneath Hill 60, Unknown, The Impossible, The Lost City of Z, Jarhead..I hope I'm not missing any lol. A good time to get caught up on movies! I loved watching them under a blanket with a kitty on my lap hehe

8. What will you miss the most when the world finally runs out of petroleum? *shrugs* Who knows, maybe they'll have everything electric by then?

9. Do you wake up by yourself, to an alarm, music, or have someone else wake you up? Either Abby wakes me up or I just wake up naturally usually

10. Finish the sentence: There are two kinds of people in this world... I like Tina's answer: "those who can come up with a witty answer to this and those who cannot" haha

I'm so happy 1917 won the Oscar for Best Cinematography! I would have been VERY surprised and sad if it hadn't! It also won for sound mixing and visual effects. I'd never even heard of Parasite, but it seemed popular lol. I didn't even recognize Emenem lol, and I loved when the man with Down's Syndrome presented an award <3

glacier_kitty: (Default)
I just saw 1917..wow, what an experience! It was filmed all in one shot, and you never knew what was coming. That just took it to a whole new level. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Cherry's brother Benedict Cumberbatch! He's awesome lol. Definitely one to get on DVD, and I hope it wins some Oscars! For some reason, most of the trailers at the beginning were scary, and the insanely high volume of the IMAX theater didn't help either *shivers*

I'm finally moving my pics to Flickr, which is going to take awhile, but I can't wait to get rid of Photobucket (it's STILL down for a lot of people, a month later!). I've had trouble using it for years, especially on a Mac! I HATED that it wouldn't keep my pictures in order, and put them somewhere random, like page 34..ugh. I feel better each time I replace the link from PB to Flickr haha. PB might struggle to stay alive after this..

Day 11-13 )

Today's trivia: The White House was designed by Irishman James Hoban who won a competition in 1792, which lead him to create the building

1. What’s the best striped food? Cookies
2. What’s the best spotted food? Do chocolate chip cookies count?
3. What’s the best layered food? Cake, etc
4. What’s the best swirly food? Cinnamon rolls, ice cream and chocolate sauce, etc
5. What’s the best black-and-white food? Oreos

Ryan and Joe did Thanksgiving with their friends yesterday, so we're doing Thanksgiving with them today..I can't wait for yummy food hehe

It's so funny watching movies set in Alaska by non-Alaskans..yesterday I watched one with John Denver in it, and judging from the scenery and a shot at a flying log (it had places like Gustavus on it), it was set in Southeast Alaska..but they mentioned they had to drop off supplies at Kotzebue, which they arrived at that night. Umm..Kotzebue is on the far western part of the state, above the Arctic Circle, and there definitely aren't trees there. There's NO way a small plane could fly to Kotzebue in a few hours from Southeast Alaska lol. Mom and I had to roll our eyes at that :P (I also didn't know John Denver was in any movies! Cool lol)

Day 328-332 )
glacier_kitty: (Default)
1. What mini version of a popular snack food is better than its original? Mini Chips Ahoy..you can eat more of them at once haha

3. What food, not yet miniaturized as far as you know, might make a great hors d’oeuvre for parties? Hmm..not sure..
4. What snack food might be better in a giant size? Hmm..Oreos?
5. What five mini-scoops of ice cream flavors would go really well together? Vanilla, chocolate chip, cookies and cream, cookie dough, strawberry

glacier_kitty: (Default)
1. What’s a movie that makes you feel patriotic? The Patriot haha
2. When you first started driving, what’s something you did mostly because you could? I've only driven twice, once in a parking lot sobbing because I was so scared haha, and the second time was driving back home from a restaurant near my parents' house..it wasn't very long, but I still got a headache..weird
3. What’s a good song whose title contains some form of the word “free?” "I Want to Break Free"-Queen
4. When did you last unexpectedly receive something for free? Recently
5. What’s something you’ve given freely in recent weeks? Time

Yesterday my parents had a barbecue, so me, Ryan and Jo came over and sat outside and soaked up the cool weather before a massive heat dome decided to park itself over Alaska today lol (it was NINETY degrees in Anchorage yesterday?!? That's crazy! A good day to hike on Byron Glacier :P). Ryan made SUPER delicious bread..I've definitely missed his baking since he moved out lol. It's supposed to be 88 degrees on Sunday..ughh D:

Mom and I saw The Secret Life of Pets 2, and the most accurate part was the cat casually knocking things off a cabinet and getting on its owner's bed, meowing, and putting its paw on her face when she didn't react..100% Abby LOL

Day 182-185 )
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Tonight I saw How to Train Your Dragon 3 at the library with mom and Denise..we all missed it when it was at the theater (movies don't stay in the theater very long here it seems), so we were very happy when we found out it was being shown at the library. We were probably the only adults without kids there LOL. Toothless is one of the best characters ever hehe. <3 It was sad, but still happy too lol (they should make a TV show or something, I can't get enough of Toothless :P)

Can they redo season 8 of Game of Thrones?? Seriously, what was that?? All the character development pretty much got thrown out. Ugh, it should have been so much better :/

Day 117: A song by a lead singer you think is too homely for words: *shrugs*

Yesterday mom and I saw Avengers: Endgame..a long, wild ride haha. Those movies are so fun :P

Today's trivia: Winston Churchill suffered from narcolepsy
glacier_kitty: (Default)
I am now back home! The last few days of the vacation were busy, but so much fun. On Friday before the game we drove up to the college (UC Irvine) to scope it out so we knew what we were doing before the game lol (it wasn't far from the hotel, maybe 10-15 minutes away). We bought tickets and found a couple geocaches and then checked out nearby Fashion Island, an indoor/outdoor mall/plaza type thing.it was huge! Most of the clothing stores were nothing I'd like, and amazingly, there was a Barnes and Noble there! I've never seen one in a mall before! I probably spent waaay too much time there, at least two hours LOL..oops. :P I was happy to see a lot of people shopping there <3

After that we relaxed at the hotel and then went back to UC Irvine for the game (and found a couple more caches lol). It was really surreal actually being there! I kept looking for Debbie (Scott's sister), and finally spotted her on the opposite side from us (I sent her a message saying I was coming too). The area was super loud, but it was SO MUCH FUN!! They did really, really well, and it was awesome seeing Scott's famous "Stadick Scream" in person haha. In the second set, they completely annihilated the other team..one player had 3 service aces in a row, and Scott had around 3 blocks as well. They won that set 25-12! (The team they played somehow won one set over Hawaii the week before..no idea how, considering how they played this night..Hawaii is REALLY good.) Before the third set started we went over to where Debbie and her three-year-old daughter Selah were sitting..she was COMPLETELY shocked when she saw us..she thought I was joking when I said I was coming to the game!! We haven't been a huge part of their lives (we first met in 2003), so I thought she'd be like "ehh" about a distant cousin (third cousin, according to my family tree lol) coming to visit, but no, she was very happy to see us! She was sitting in the first row behind where the team hangs out when they're not playing at the moment, and Scott spotted us and waved! (Yay, he remembered us lol.) more under here! )

What a great trip! Exhausting, but fun lol. We had a big sale at work on Saturday, so there will probably be a lot of shelving to do :P

more pics!! )

I have just now heard of the fire at Notre Dame at Paris, and now I want to cry. :( That is so sad!! My heart broke when I saw the video of the spire falling..omg :(
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Hello from California! Yesterday our flight to Anchorage left at 8, so we had to get up at 5 something..ugh. At least we were rewarded with awesome views of Denali, Mt. Foraker and some glaciers! All three of our flights were under three hours because of an awesome tailwind! I watched How to Train Your Dragon (HOW had I never watched it till now?! That movie is amazing! Toothless the dragon reminded me of a cat LOL) and a lot of How to Train Your Dragon 2 (must finish it on the flight back!!). I saw some cool mountains and glaciers flying out of Anchorage, but then on my side it got cloudy! I looked over at the other side and it looked clear for miles! When the clouds did clear, my side was just ocean..it's a good thing I've seen the glaciers on that side before, but I'm always sad to miss them anyway. :P We flew in to John Wayne Airport in Orange County, which I hadn't been to in YEARS. Everything looked so green flying in!! That always amazes me after a long Alaska winter lol. We got our rental car and drove to the hotel in Costa Mesa, which is pretty close to the airport. It was nice to relax, I was SO tired lol..getting up so early makes me feel awful the whole day :P

Today we had breakfast and geocached our way to nearby Newport Beach lol (really stressful when you're not used to lots of traffic and don't know the area!). I think we found 5 or 6. I don't remember ever going to Newport Beach before (as a kid I mostly went to Redondo or Hermosa). It was pretty nice. We got some yummy food (I'm pretty sure California is more expensive than Alaska, wow D:) and walked on the piers and fed some pigeons..poor things must have a rough life, some of them had deformed feet and one had fishing wire wrapped around its feet and maybe part of its wing..OMG so sad. :( :( :( I tried catching it, but it was still too fast for me. :( That probably happens often, sadly, judging by their feet. Poor things. :( After that we relaxed at the hotel and then Aunt Susan met us for dinner..weirdly, she works at Newport Beach! (She lives near Torrance, 37 miles away.) It was nice to see her again! We ate at a Mexican restaurant, where they make guacamole right in front of you! I don't usually like guacamole, but this looked too yummy not to try. It was indeed really good! Fairbanks guacamole is sad LOL. We talked for a couple hours about dad's health and stuff, and then Susan drove us back to the hotel. Nice seeing her again!

Tomorrow is Scott's game, woohoo! I hope they do well lol

herbert-ponting-apsley-cherry-garrard-1886-1959-with-his-typewriter-on-board-terra-nova-british-antarctic
Happy birthday Cherry!! <3 I was so happy when I remembered it was his birthday haha..dad said it was the 2nd and I was like "IT'S CHERRY'S BIRTHDAY!!!" haha. I miss you, even though I've never met you LOL (I still really believe we would have gotten along well with each other). I can't believe it's been three years already since I first read The Worst Journey in the World! One of the best decisions ever :D

I wonder a lot if I'm TOO easily entertained..I watched the remake of Papillon last night, and I thought it and the original were very good movies. The remake was pretty similar to the original too. There are people on IMDb rating it one star or four and saying it was terrible and painful and and insult and stuff like that. I thought it was very faithful to the original (it's a book as well, but I haven't read it yet) and very well done. I seem to enjoy a lot of movies people hate, like The Green Lantern, for one (and I hate ones that most people love, like Gravity and Inside Out). I just like being entertained I guess lol

Also, THIS: In a weird twist of historical fate, the Terror [Crozier's ship] was actually one of the ships used during the War of 1812. When Francis Scott Key was watching the "bombs bursting in air," he was likely talking about the rounds being fired from the Terror itself. Before the Terror became an expedition vessel, it was used exclusively for bombardment. As a British ship, that meant attacking Americans during the War of 1812, specifically in the Battle of Baltimore and at Fort McHenry in 1814

WHOA WHAT. Even if it was attacking us, that is AWESOME haha..I'll never hear that song the same way again now :P

Today mom and I saw Aquaman..OH MY GOODNESS
aquaman_zpsil0upgje
*SWOONS* Jason Momoa is awesome lol (when we got back home, dad was like "is Khal Drogo ok?" haha). I was very disappointed I didn't see the scene of him in the water with icebergs, and after I Googled it I discovered that scene is in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MOVIE! OMG LOL. Guess I need to watch Justice League next. :P Judging from the scene at the end, there might be a sequel..works for me ;)

And I think I have a new Cherry sighting!
p2005-5-565-img
It looks like the clothes he wore, and his stance is very Cherry-like lol..some pictures I'm like "hmm, is that him?" and in other ones like this one I get a definite Cherry Aura haha (a fun "rushing" feeling!). Yay! (Searching for Cherry seems to be a Holiday Tradition now LOL..too much time on my hands :P)

December 22-24 )
glacier_kitty: (Default)
I'm apparently on a mission to find the Worst Disaster Movie Ever, and yesterday I might have found it:

I knew I HAD to watch this when I saw the title "Airplane vs. Volcano" lol..it was SOOO bad and so much fun to watch haha. I was hoping there would be some terrible air traffic control stuff for mom to make fun of, and sure enough, she rolled her eyes when the pilots radioed "Control"..yeahh you have to say the name of the place you're talking to, like "Fairbanks Tower, this is [flight number]." I've also seen better graphics in movies way older than this one..they were absolutely AWFUL lol. The airplane was even named Erebus, after the volcano in Antarctica..that is AWESOME haha. This movie's terribleness will be hard to beat :P

Today was the Fairbanks Geocachers' Christmas event..it was disappointing because we just played trivia games..I do like trivia games, but we should have done a gift exchange too! At least there was yummy food :P
