Ryan and Jo got married on Monday!! They're going to have a ceremony during the summer, but they got the paperwork done for insurance purposes. They definitely seemed happy when I went to dinner with them yesterday..Ryan kept looking at Jo with an adoring look on his face..awww. Ryan definitely found the right person <3

In a couple weeks or so, grandma is coming back to the US to live again. Aunt Cindy will go over there to help her home, and mom is going to stay at her house while she's away. Grandma is going to live in a nursing home in Topeka, Kansas, where Aunt Julie lives. Her birthday is in April, so mom and I are both going to visit her for her birthday! It's been four years since I saw her in person, so I'm sure that'll be a good birthday present! Hopefully we'll have time to find some geocaches too, so we can get Missouri (we're flying into Kansas City) and Kansas digital souvenirs!

In April, I'm getting a raise and more hours at work! I'll get $1 something more and 20 hours instead of 15..cool!! Denise said I work hard and I deserve it (does it count as work if it's fun though?? Haha). It's nice to be appreciated lol

I feel kinda silly panicking about LJ going under, but I'm still glad I have everything on Dreamwidth too. A lot of people have left LJ entirely, but I just..can't. Who knows what'll happen in the future though..

Today's trivia: Oysters were so popular in New York in the 19th century that the shells were used to pave Pearl Street. They were also used for lime for the masonry of the Trinity Church

1. How many hours a day/night do you usually sleep? Around 8 or 9 I think
2. What do you do when you can't sleep? Drink some water, take Xanax if I'm really anxious, toss and turn lol. I actually do sleep better in a four-poster, the curtain definitely makes it a more cozy and secure feeling!
3. How often do you devote time to just thinking about something? My mind is always going haha
4. If you had to choose one person to never talk to again, who would you choose? A really annoying customer at work who is oblivious to how annoying he is..one time he told me I should be fired, and told Donna it looked like she hadn't slept in two days, etc..he's driving me and Denise crazy lol (he THINKS he's being funny, but it's not, especially when he slapped my hand when reaching for his money!!)
5. If you had to choose one person, NOT your significant other, who you would speak to every day for the rest of your life, who would you choose? Mom

LJ still lives!! I'll probably keep posting there as long as I still have friends there..DW definitely is a good backup though!

I finished Latin on Duolingo (it's a newer course, so it's pretty short. I hope they add more in the future!), so now I'm learning Norwegian..why not lol :P

OMG they found the wreck of the Endurance!! That is SO cool!! Amazing how well preserved it is too! I wonder what cool things they'll find when surveying the area lol

If this is the end of LJ, it's been great this past 18 years! I've met so many great people, and I'm glad I'll still see you here on Dreamwidth <3

9. Do you still seek out new music? What is the best way to discover new music? )

Today's trivia: Quebec City is the only walled-in city and one of the oldest cities in North America

At work Heidi wanted us to do a strengths assessment test, and my top five strengths were Context, Empathy, Adaptability, Input and Positivity. Here's what Context says (I'll bold what I especially agree with):

People who are especially talented in the Context theme enjoy thinking about the past. They understand the present by researching its history. Chances are good that you periodically investigate some of the events, policies, or people whose actions contributed to worldwide wars. You might delve into materials that reveal how these global conflicts were brought to an end. It’s very likely that you really like to read about past events and the key people involved. By accumulating lots of knowledge regarding days gone by, you regularly anticipate the opportunities and pitfalls you are apt to face in the coming months, years, or decades. Because of your strengths, you create a vision of the future by unraveling what happened in the past. You strive to understand the what, when, who, where, how, and why of events. You are determined to create a framework of facts so you can put things in perspective. Instinctively, you welcome opportunities to hear historians share their thoughts, stories, or theories about prominent people. Your interest probably extends to important events. Driven by your talents, you routinely gather historical facts or artifacts — that is, pictures, tools, books, artwork, correspondence, or documents. You often wait to determine whether this information is useful. Your interest in history probably has no purpose other than to answer your own questions. You are simply intrigued by the past and its people. The future starts to take shape in your mind as soon as you begin to rummage through your collection of historic truths and objects

Wow! I love how accurate this is, especially the collecting of historical artifacts and stuff (Cherry has taken a lot of my money LOL). Heidi said she also scored the most in Context, and had never met anyone else who had. Cool!

the other four..yay quizzes :P )

5. How far should a government go to prevent its citizens from causing harm to themselves? Umm..we should have things like building codes and stuff, at least

6. If time travel is possible, would we have met time travelers already? Who knows lol, maybe they haven't revealed themselves yet :P

7. What is something popular now that annoys you? For some reason, there are authors that don't put what people are saying in quotation marks, which drives me CRAZY. I read a book like that once and it annoyed me so much I can't read any more like that..too bad, there are books like The Road I've wanted to read but seeing no quotation marks makes me groan. I don't know what they're trying to accomplish with that, but it's not "cool" lol

8. Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction books? Why? I like both! Just depends on what I want to read at the time lol

Today's trivia: The Pokémon Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan are based on Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan
glacier_kitty: (Default)
1. Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? Probably lol
2. What do you think happens when we die? I like to think our soul goes somewhere, but who knows..
3. What’s your favorite action movie? 1917, The Avengers, The Mummy Returns, etc
4. What’s your favorite smell? Bread baking, fresh wood, evergreen trees, etc
5. Exercise: worth it? It can be lol

Yay I was finally able to import my entries to Dreamwidth! I feel SO much better having a backup now, especially with world events happening right now..

I got fun lights for my bed!

How cool! My bed isn't naked anymore LOL. I hope I can sleep alright with them on :P

pokemon update )

19. Would you rather have all your meals prepared for you, but not have any say in the menu (outside of certain dietary restrictions e.g. allergies), or sleep eight hours every night, but not get to choose your bedtime? Hmm..maybe the second one, as long as I get to read before going to sleep :P

20. What makes you roll your eyes every time you hear/see it? Crazy things that happen in the world lol

21. When was the last time you got to tell someone "I told you so!"? Recently?

22. If someone narrated your life, who would you want to be the narrator? Morgan Freeman, of course :P

23. Is there something that you're interested in that most people aren't? Sure, like Cherry lol

24. What was cool when you were young, but really isn't cool now? Those 90s colorful jacket things haha, JNCO Jeans, etc

25. What is the least inspiring/interesting meal you've eaten? Salad, French toast (eww, soggy eggy tasteless bread :/), etc
glacier_kitty: (Default)

Pretty sure Abby is enjoying my bed as much as I am LOL..so cozy!!

I wish I kept up crossposting here (just in case), because LJ for some reason doesn't allow that anymore..thankfully I have entries up to 2018 saved, but I guess I'll have to do the rest manually. LJ is my first home, but I definitely want a second place for my posts, just in case. I'll try to remember to keep up with Dreamwidth haha..it might take awhile to manually put the rest of my entries over there though :P

Since I still have my ovaries, I still get symptoms of PMS, which is annoying lol..my face is breaking out like crazy! D:

glacier_kitty: (Default)
1. Can you do simple sewing repairs, such as replacing a button or rejoining a straight seam? No..even when I was in Home Ec. in middle school, I was terrible at sewing..the stuffed lizard I made ended up only having three legs LOL. I love him more because of that though :P
2. Can you change a flat tire? No
3. Can you plan and cook a simple meal? If I really tried lol
4. Can you rewire a lamp? No..I'm so lame LOL
5. Are you a spender or a saver? Are you able to switch from one to the other on occasion? Usually a spender, but sometimes I can save some too

Sorry I've been so quiet, but moving my pics over to Flickr (and matching the links on LJ) has taken over my life LOL. Right now I have 4,809 pics there, and quite a few more to add still..wow. O_o I can't wait to get rid of Photobucket :P

It actually got above 0 this week! It was awesome lol

1917

Jan. 13th, 2020 07:10 pm
glacier_kitty: (Default)
I just saw 1917..wow, what an experience! It was filmed all in one shot, and you never knew what was coming. That just took it to a whole new level. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Cherry's brother Benedict Cumberbatch! He's awesome lol. Definitely one to get on DVD, and I hope it wins some Oscars! For some reason, most of the trailers at the beginning were scary, and the insanely high volume of the IMAX theater didn't help either *shivers*

I'm finally moving my pics to Flickr, which is going to take awhile, but I can't wait to get rid of Photobucket (it's STILL down for a lot of people, a month later!). I've had trouble using it for years, especially on a Mac! I HATED that it wouldn't keep my pictures in order, and put them somewhere random, like page 34..ugh. I feel better each time I replace the link from PB to Flickr haha. PB might struggle to stay alive after this..

Day 11-13 )

Today's trivia: The White House was designed by Irishman James Hoban who won a competition in 1792, which lead him to create the building
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Tonight I start on the journey to Colorado! One thing I hate about living in Alaska is how long it takes to get most places and flying overnight..oh well, it'll be good to see family again lol

Yay, one of the best things about the end of the year: the books I read in 2019!

January
A book with a plant in the title or on the cover: The Wild Trees by Richard Preston (Jan. 2-6) (4/5)

A debut novel: The Wild Inside by Christine Carbo (Jan. 6-13) (5/5)

A book becoming a movie in 2019: Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple (Jan. 13-16) (5/5)

A book by two female authors: No Horizon Is So Far: Two Women And Their Extraordinary Journey Across Antarctica by Liv Arnesen and Ann Bancroft (Jan. 17-20) (4/5)

A book that makes you nostalgic: Where Am I Now? by Mara Wilson (Jan. 21-23) (2/5)

A book with a two-word title: The Precipice by Paul Doiron (Jan. 24-28) (5/5)

A book you meant to read in 2018: Here Shall I Die Ashore: Stephen Hopkins - Bermuda Castaway, Jamestown Survivor, and Mayflower Pilgrim by Caleb H. Johnson (Jan. 28-30) (4/5)

the rest )

Last year I read 74 books..this year I read EIGHTY FOUR!! I never thought I'd be able to do that when I started tracking my books lol. Awesome! That'll be hard to beat I think. :P Here's the 2020 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge if anyone wants to do it with me :)

Ugh, Photobucket had a huge crash and has been having problems for a couple weeks now. I really need to put all my pictures on Flickr (it's WAY easier to use, and I've never had problems with it like on Photobucket), but I need for it to start working again so I can put the right links on my pics here. That's going to be a HUGE job, but I really just want to get rid of annoying Photobucket. I hope our pictures really are backed up like they told us!

Day 365: A song to say goodbye: "Graduation"–Vitamin C. See you next year!
glacier_kitty: (apsley cherry-garrard 4)
I'm totally freaking out..I think someone hacked my Photobucket account, because many pictures from different albums have been deleted, including pics from this trip. If I wasn't convinced to abandon Photobucket and use just Flickr, I am now..it seems to function better anyway (for some reason Photobucket puts the pics out of order, even with its filters, which is EXTREMELY annoying to me). I doubt I'll be able to get the pictures back (but I asked anyway :P), so I'll have to upload them all over again (luckily Flickr is very fast at uploading lots of pics at once). Ugh. Maybe I'll do a little each day, so I don't get overwhelmed. Stupid hackers!! *glares*

Anyway, mom and I made it to Cambridge just fine yesterday (beware, I'm going to freak out a lot in this entry LOL)..we had to take the train to London, the Underground to King's Cross (I indeed saw Platform 9 3/4, but the line to get a pic was too long..the Harry Potter shop next to it was cool though!), the train to Cambridge, then to a bus stop near SPRI. Like Wheathampstead, I had butterflies first seeing Cambridge. If I thought the past few days were cold, it was NOTHING compared to Cambridge..I sure felt like Scott of the Antarctic as we walked to SPRI..cold wind was COLD!!! I squeed when I finally saw SPRI..another dream come true! I couldn't believe I was there! Their museum was kind of small, but OMG the treasures it had..artifacts from many different expeditions (Shackleton, Franklin, Amundsen, etc), but of course my favorites were from Scott's expedition. They had a sledge, some of Scott's and Birdie's last letters, food tins, and..and..THINGS CHERRY HAD USED ON THE EXPEDITION, ESPECIALLY ONES TO CAPE CROZIER!!!!! I was completely freaking out haha! That was insanely awesome!!! I told the people at the front desk how happy I was to finally be there, and told them Cherry was my hero..both of them were like "heck yeah, we love Cherry!" and the guy said "The Worst Journey in the World is the best book ever right?" Ummm, YES lol. The lady said she was TEACHING A CLASS ABOUT CHERRY AND THE WORST JOURNEY!! OMG I didn't even know such a class existed!! I bet I'd get an A++. :P I told them I wondered if there was anyone still alive who knew Cherry, and the lady said some of her colleagues had, and one of them might be there today, and would I like to talk to him on the phone? Umm YES PLEASE haha! The guy was a past archivist or something like that..he said he might have seen Cherry once before he died, but he knew his widow Angela very well! He said she was very nice. Wow, that was an incredible treat! I was starstruck and so honored he took time out to talk to me! Everyone there told me Cherry was very shy and felt so bad about not being able to save Scott, which I knew (I'm always afraid to ask that..I'm worried someone would say he was mean or something like that, which is ridiculous..he didn't have a mean bone in his body!). The lady also mentioned [livejournal.com profile] twirlynoodle, who is making a Terra Nova graphic novel! I was like "yeah, I know her!!" Awesome. :P I'd love to go to their archive room where they keep the letters and diaries and stuff, but you have to make an appointment..someday hopefully! I was jealous of the school having a field trip there lol..awesome. :P Their gift shop was awesome and dangerous LOL..they had so many awesome looking books, including an edition of The Worst Journey I didn't have (I couldn't justify buying it though, my suitcase is only so big and I had bought a lot of books already LOL), and all FOUR books of the South Polar Times!! Wow, what an amazing place, an amazing experience, and a great end to my Cherry Pilgrimage. :D This trip was amazing!

Today is the last day of our vacation..we're still not sure if the flights will be messed up because of the weather though. We'll just have to see what it's like tomorrow. I'm very happy to stay home out of the cold today though :P

Today is also Jack's 96th birthday!! Wow, impressive lol. Mom's going to get him a yummy cake later :D

1. What would you sarcastically like to thank your local government for? Leaving up graffiti in places where everyone can see it, especially tourists. It's so pretty, right??
2. What would you sarcastically like to thank your body for? Having migraines after doing something strenuous, like big sales at work. I love feeling like my head is being hit with a hammer!
3. What would you sarcastically like to thank your neighbors for? Watching something loud. I hate peace and quiet!
4. What would you sarcastically like to thank the internet for? Having flame wars over nothing, and being mean because they don't support the same person you do. Who wants to get along??
5. What would you sarcastically like to thank November for? Getting dark at 3 and 4..I love feeling like it's 10 PM at 6! (That was kinda fun LOL)

Here's something amusing I found yesterday: Fake subtitles of library books. I very briefly wondered if The Worst Journey in the World would be on there, but I was like "yeah right, what are the chances?" Imagine my COMPLETE shock when I clicked to the third page, and there it was!! Awesome. :P Awesome library, wherever it is lol (funnily enough, A Walk to the Pole, the book next to The Worst Journey in the pic, was the book that finally tipped me over into obsession haha)

One thing I hate about Prozac is that it's hard to sleep..a couple months ago mom bought me something called Hyland's Calms Forte Sleep Aid Tablets, for natural relief of tension and sleeplessness. I thought I'd give it a try, and OMG, it is AMAZING, 100 times better than melatonin. I can actually sleep for hours at a time (well, unless Abby wakes me up lol, but I can go back to sleep easily). I'll wake up and think it's 5 or 6 or something, and am shocked when I see it's almost 9! If anyone has problems with sleeplessness, you should definitely try it..it works great!

Today I met the sci-fi author Ian C. Esselmont! He paid with a credit card and I thought I recognized his name..so I was like "you're an author right?" and he was like, "yep, I write sci-fi books! I'd sign one for you if you had any of them." Whoa! I Googled him after he left and it said he's married to Gerri Brightwell, who is also an author (which I knew) that shops at the bookstore all the time. Double whoa! I did see Gerri, but the store was too busy to focus on just one person lol. I totally didn't know she was married to another author, whose books I've definitely shelved in the bookstore. Wow! That was really cool lol. You never know who you'll meet at the little bookstore in Fairbanks, Alaska :D

How cool is this: Gulkana Glacier in Interior Alaska is a testing ground for equipment intended for use in space. Wow!! That is super cool! (I've hiked on Gulkana Glacier before, so it's even more special to me lol)

I really wish I knew why Photobucket pictures aren't working for me on LJ (they work on other sites!). It's upsetting to me, since I have hundreds (thousands??) of pictures on here, and replacing them would take forever. I emailed LJ and Photobucket, in the hope something can be fixed. Guess I'll have to use Flickr for now..

1. When dining out, do you usually save room for dessert? At times
2. How do you feel about saving places in line or saving seats in theaters? That's fine, though annoying when the theater is full..
3. What’s one thing you did to save money this past year? Bought things used
4. Besides money, what’s something you’re saving for later? Popcorn!
5. In what way did you recently save the best for last? I dunno..

So I read this today on FML haha: "Today, I was pushed off of a glacier by a very angry tourist. Why? I work as a glacier guide, and apparently some people find it overly frustrating to be informed that there isn't a café on the glacier. FML." I was shocked..I never expected to read anything about glaciers there!! I hope they're ok :P

Today was the Pre-Algebra final..I was lost on some questions at the end but a bunch were easy too. I hope I did ok haha. I may take the next level of math, especially since the same teacher will be teaching it..he's a really good teacher

There's gonna be Internet sales tax? Weird :/

I'm now a member of Goodreads! It looks like a good place to keep track of the books I'm reading. I really like it so far as I'm exploring what's on it. Here's my profile if you'd like to see: http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/7326690

The Fairbanks International Airport reached a low temperature of 35 below zero at 1114 PM on Tuesday. This sets a new record low temperature for November 15, breaking the previous record low of 33 below set back in 1969

The first cold weather outbreak of the season has settled in over interior Alaska. Unusually frigid temperatures for mid-November have been observed across much of the region. Temperatures colder than 40 below zero are being reported in valleys in the central and northeastern interior. Infrared satellite images also indicate temperatures under 50 below zero in some of the coldest valley locations.

Several record low temperatures were broken overnight in the Fairbanks area. This includes Eielson Air Force Base which bottomed out at 42 below this morning... shattering the previous record of 37 below set back in 1956. Record or near record low temperatures are possible again Thursday morning. The record low for November 17th at the Fairbanks Airport is 39 below... and 40 below at Eielson Air Force Base.

Temperatures from 15 to 35 degrees below normal will persist over much of the interior the next several days. A slight moderation is expected on the weekend... but temperatures climbing above zero across interior Alaska are not expected any time soon. Long range models indicate another shot of reinforcing cold air arriving early next week... and possibly hanging around into the Thanksgiving weekend

It did end up raining..the roads are REALLY slippery now. It was crazy walking to work in the rain while walking on snow haha. There was only one other person at work when I got there. Eventually Paulette came in too..I was surprised cause she lives in North Pole (11 miles away). She said it was the longest 11 miles of her life haha. So it was only the three of us today. It was smart they stayed home..it was hard enough just walking on the ice. The schools closed even (they're closed tomorrow too). I fell twice walking home..eesh. I tried walking in the snow but it was turning into slushy crap. Maybe I should stay home tomorrow haha..I feel like crap from Paxil withdrawal anyway (feeling dizzy and feeling like my body was being shocked at work..no thanks). Apparently a rainfall this late in November is really, really rare..the last time it happened was November 24, 1936. Woww (read this article for more: http://www.newsminer.com/view/full_story/10413545/article-Ice-storm-unprecedented-in-Interior-Alaska--meteorologists-say?instance=home_lead_story). Crazy stuff

At the end of the month dad's canceling the internet service in Texas..since my email is MSN based it's gonna get deleted as well. So I made a new one..it's goodness_glaciers@hotmail.com. Rather annoying but I was glad to have a new name haha

Athabaskan: The collective name for the Indians of interior Alaska and northwestern Canada. Thought to have come from Asia by the land bridge some 9,000 to 16,000 years ago, they lived by hunting, fishing and gathering, activities that continue today. Alaska's Athabaskans are closely related to the Navajos of the southwestern United States (I wonder if the Natives I see here are Athabaskan..)
