Sometimes I get these really strong urges to look for pictures of Cherry (I'm sure I've mentioned this before lol) even though I figure I've seen them all anyway..a lot of the time when I get those urges though, I somehow find "new" ones. Today was no exception..I found not one, but THREE pictures of Cherry I'd never seen before!!! I love when that happens haha..yay! (It's that same "lucky" feeling I had like when I went to Gulliver's Books and found The Worst Journey in the World there. Heh, guess my version of the lottery is finding pics of Cherry LOL.) I also came across The Worst Journey on Project Gutenberg, which has a preface from the book that I'd never seen before and must share:

"The trouble is that they are inclined to lose their ideals in this complicated atmosphere of civilization. They run one another down like the deuce, and it is quite time that stopped. What is the use of A running down Scott because he served with Shackleton, or B going for Amundsen because he served with Scott? They have all done good work; within their limits, the best work to date. There are jobs for which, if I had to do them, I would like to serve under Scott, Amundsen, Shackleton and Wilson—each to his part. For a joint scientific and geographical piece of organization, give me Scott; for a Winter Journey, Wilson; for a dash to the Pole and nothing else, Amundsen: and if I am in the devil of a hole and want to get out of it, give me Shackleton every time. They will all go down in polar history as leaders, these men. I believe Bowers would also have made a great name for himself if he had lived, and few polar ships have been commanded as capably as was the Terra Nova, by Pennell.

In a way this book is a sequel to the friendship which there was between Wilson, Bowers and myself, which, having stood the strain of the Winter Journey, could never have been broken. Between the three of us we had a share in all the big journeys and bad times which came to Scott's main landing party, and what follows is, particularly, our unpublished diaries, letters and illustrations. I, we, have tried to show how good the whole thing was—and how bad..."

THIS. THIS is why I love Cherry and Birdie and Scott's expedition in general. True friendship like that is hard to come by! Thank you, Cherry, for your beautiful words..he really was such a kind and caring person <3

Just when I think I can't possibly love Cherry any more, I read something new about him, like this (which is in Ponting's book of the expedition):

"Few seemed to have much idea of playing the pianola piano, and the audience were caused some occasional suffering, which was borne in silence. Two or three, however, notably Debenham and Cherry-Garrard, manipulated the controls well, and played with feeling and understanding"

OMGG Cherry could play music!! I squeed so much when I read that..it just makes me happy for some reason haha! (Ponting, why didn't you take a picture of that?? It would have been a great photo LOL.) I can see music helping him get his feelings out though, since he was so shy. I'm deeply sad I'll never get to meet Cherry, he seemed like such a great person <3

Speaking of pictures, I found one of Scott's whole crew on the Terra Nova, and I believe Cherry is in this screenshot I took:
 photo Screen Shot 2017-02-26 at 6.56.50 PM_zpsv6ogx9w2.png
I might be crazy, but the Cherry Aura is telling me he's behind the guy with the buttons on his jacket. It looks like his "neutral" expression I've seen in other pics of him. Cool :D

I was so sad when I heard about Bill Paxton's death! I grew up watching Twister and Titanic..sad :(

So I get these "must look at Cherry pics" urges lol and last night I was looking on Getty Images and they had pics I've seen before, except they're in good quality AND LOOK WHAT I FOUND

LOOK HE'S WEARING HIS GLASSES!! (I took a screenshot just of him so you can see it better.) I was seriously SO happy when I noticed that LOL, I couldn't believe it! It gives me butterflies!! Usually he took them off for pictures, but I guess he had his hands full with the pony lol. He shouldn't have felt so self-conscious wearing them, he looks great!! And then I FOUND TWO MORE

 photo Screen Shot 2017-01-20 at 6.43.04 PM_zpswjpcwmam.png
This is probably the same day as the picture above, and I thought he had been wearing goggles, but they ARE his glasses!! This pic gives me massive butterflies lol, whoa (he's looking at meeee *melts*)

 photo Screen Shot 2017-01-20 at 6.38.57 PM_zpsxukwpsb9.png
This might also have been the same day, but awwww. He looks so happy and amused watching his horse roll in the snow. <3 <3 He was so awesome <3 (I wish I knew why his glasses fascinate me lol..I am weird :P). So happy!!

Today I read Mark Gatiss (who played Cherry in The Worst Journey in the World docudrama) was in a few episodes of Game of Thrones!!! OMG I'm going to have to watch those scenes again lol. He's also in Sherlock..guess I'll have to check out that show..if Cherry the Second is in it, it must be good ;)

Today someone told me they thought I looked young, but that my eyes looked mature..ummm thanks?? Interesting compliment LOL

OMG I'm glad I'm going back to work tomorrow, I've spent waay too much time thinking about Cherry lol. Since I had luck with Ponting's pictures, I decided to watch his video of the expedition also to see if I could spot Cherry (where he's not named of course :P). Plus I just wanted to see him in "action" LOL. I'll post some screenshots, then I'm gonna try not to talk about him for the rest of the week :P

So I found this article about Cherry the other day..

When Apsley Cherry-Garrard, one of Captain Scott's companions on his doomed polar expedition in 1912, fell in love aged 50, his lovemaking followed an unusual pattern. He met 20-year-old Angela Turner on a Norwegian cruise in 1937. He was alone, she with her parents and brother.

One day, the boat docked and Angela and Cherry slipped off for a walk on their own. They sat on a bench where Cherry picked up a small piece of quartz and offered it to Angela. 'Years later, when she had become an Antarctic expert, Angela discovered that the courtship ritual of the penguin centres around stone-giving, stones being a vital commodity for the construction of the nest.'

This story illuminates the reserved, passionate Cherry-Garrard (always known, except to his mother, as Cherry) in several ways. At that time, almost no one in the world would have known such an intimate detail about penguin lovemaking, but Cherry had made 'the worst journey in the world' to collect penguin eggs and always retained a deep affection for the comical, determined birds he had nearly given his life to see.

He was also chronically shy and afflicted by bouts of dark depression which made expressing his emotions painful for him. This type of non-verbal communication was the perfect solution for a man who felt things deeply but had terrible trouble talking about them.

Awww. OMG I love this so much. *swoons* I think I just turned into a hopeless romantic LOL. That's quite an age difference, but I'd marry him too if he did such a sweet gesture like that. I hope I can find a modern Cherry somewhere..please, give me a rock and I'm all yours LOL. What a sweet and amazing guy! <3 (Cherry giving Angela quartz was even in the docudrama! I was wondering what that was about lol)

It can stop being windy ANY time now..20 degrees + wind = NOPE. Brrrr! A cold front must cave come through or something..

cut to spare you my obsessing LOL )

Today at work I found a book on Antarctic explorers..there was a pic of Cherry in it, so I went up to Denise and was like "that's my guy!!" haha. She must have recognized him from my Facebook posts, because she was like "oh, Cherry-Garrard?" The book had his whole name, so I was like "yep, Apsley George Benet Cherry-Garrard!" and she nodded and empathetically (is that a word?) said "CHERRY" haha!
I also came across Antarctica by Kim Stanley Robinson when cleaning books, which mentions him a lot..yeahhh I was a bit distracted at work after that :P

Mom, Ryan and I are going to Payson in December and the beginning of January! Mom mentioned having Christmas with Aunt Cindy, which would be cool :)

I apologize in advance for the craziness of this post, but OMGOMG I just came across some pics of Cherry I've never seen before (they were taken by a different photographer, not Ponting..somehow I missed them even though the photo collections are on the same website)

BUT AHHH LOOK WHAT I FOUND
 photo p54-16-345-img_zpsp042uatk.jpg
A PICTURE OF EXISTS WITH HIM WEARING GLASSES OMG. I am completely freaking out right now OMG lol. You don't know how badly I've been wanting to find a pic of him wearing glasses!! And check out that smile! *swoons* I haven't looked through all the pictures from this other guy's pics, but here are a few more of Cherry I found so far (so happy they were on the very first page!)

yay new pics of cherry! )

Well that made my day/week/year LOL. Mom and I also found a few geocaches today, so that was cool too. Now I need to calm down so I can sleep LOL (at least I'll think happy thoughts before bed :P)

Aw yay! I put it above my bed..but I might have to move it if Abby scratches at it (I told her she can look, but she can't touch it LOL. Other people have posters of Justin Bieber and other random celebrities...I have one of a long-dead Antarctic explorer LOL. Cherry is way cooler anyway :P)

Speaking of Abby..

Hmm, I think she loves me haha (ooh, I need to post pics of my new bookshelves too!)

So one thing Cherry did in Antarctica was to help write their newspaper, The South Polar Times (that's what he's doing in my poster lol). I wondered if it still existed anywhere, and it does, though in a facsimile (a reprint that looks like the original). Someone was selling three copies for $30,000!!! I found one that was pricey, but reasonable enough that I couldn't resist buying it haha (I was squeeing so hard I literally could not talk when trying to tell mom about the awesome book I found..I just started laughing haha!). This is what it looks like:

I love this pic of Cherry!! I had forgotten what his official role was in the expedition till I found this pic..the caption said he was the assistant zoologist. OMG that just makes me like him even more haha! I thought he was wearing his iced-up glasses, but now I'm not sure..in the pic below there's a guy wearing goggles, so maybe they're goggles instead. *shrugs* I was squeeing so much when I found this pic last night LOL (is it just me, or is he kinda short? Maybe it's his slouching? It seems like he should be taller lol)

Awesome group shot! I found the same pic with captions saying who everyone is, but it's too small. I saw this one first though, and correctly guessed that Cherry is the second person in back row! I could feel the Cherry Aura again haha (I'm glad his jacket is white with big pockets, that makes it easier to pick him out haha)

Tomorrow mom and I are going to Valdez! Yay, I get to talk about something other than Apsley Cherry-Garrard :P (*shivers* I LOVE TYPING HIS NAME). The forecast for Sunday when we do the glacier cruise is partly cloudy and 39 degrees..and it'll be even colder by the glacier. It says clear for Monday when we drive back..I hope it'll be nice lol

AHH I'M SO HAPPY THIS BOOK EXISTS. I had a feeling it would arrive today lol. Mom was with me when I checked the mail and was wondering why I was acting so weird LOL..I was actually shaking I was so excited haha. Finally mom was like "WTF is wrong with you??" and then I completely fell apart and started giggling and blushing so hard (my cheeks were ~cherry~ red, ha ha) and I showed her the book. I was super embarrassed lol. Whenever I have a crush on someone, mom likes to repeat their name to me, so she was whispering "Cherry! Cherry!" which made me hide my face under a blanket and giggle some more. I think I need help LOL. She came over cause we were gonna look for more bookshelves, but she could see that there was no way I was in that mindset ("you need to get this Cherry thing out first!" LOL). We watched that docudrama instead..it was my fourth time watching it haha. I love how Cherry and his companions never got mad at each other and even said "please and thank you" even in those crazy conditions. What great people! *sighs happily* (We're gonna look for the bookshelves tomorrow, maybe I'll be saner. :P) I can't wait to read this book!!

Ugh, I've been trying to fill out a survey for like..30 minutes but then it asked me if I had a crush. I had to give up and so I'm gonna write about Cherry instead lol (I have to get it out somewhere lol). I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT HIM. I haven't had a crush like this on someone for a long time lol (I feel like a teenager again!) It's kind of annoying though since it's hard for me to think about anything else right now (like I wanna fill out surveys..but..CHERRY *stares into nothing for five minutes* Writing this post is making me crazy cause I keep doing just that..and holding my head in my hands wondering why I can't concentrate!) I just want to watch that one docudrama over and over..even if it's just an actor playing Cherry, I don't care lol. Simple things from it like him pushing his glasses up (his glasses for some reason are a huge turn on for me lol) make me tingly and gleeful when I think about it LOL (though weirdly enough, I've only seen one picture of him with his glasses on!). There is actual video of him, which I should post here someday lol. It's weird though..in various pics of him, he looks SO different in them!

some pics, to show what i mean )

OMG that took WAY too long, but I came across some great pics! Now I'm gonna try to do something else :P (I'm gonna look at this post years later and be totally embarrassed, but oh well :P)

Today's trivia: During the Dust Bowl, people sewed clothes out of flour sacks when money was tight. When flour distributers heard about this, they made their bags more colorful so the subsequent clothing would be more attractive

I have suddenly become absolutely obsessed with Antarctica and Apsley Cherry-Garrard (even his name is awesome!), who was on Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to reach the South Pole (Scott made it, but everyone with him died..Cherry found their bodies later, just 11 miles from a food cache!). His book (The Worst Journey in the World), has had a huge impact on me ever since I read it (and I think reading the novel Antarctica by Kim Stanley Robinson raised the obsession too. It was weird..all of a sudden at work it hit me full force, and then I was just staring into nothing being like "CHERRY ANTARCTICA YAY" LOL), so I was very excited to find this docudrama. Reading it and being amazed was one thing, actually watching it (even a dramatization) was just..wow. I can't imagine it being -65 and not being able to light a match, having your clothes freeze solid, getting in sleeping bags that are frozen too, like in this part:

Wow..it's amazing they even lived through that! Cherry has become one of my heroes

Here, have a pic of him :D:
 photo ddd31be8864422205d58d61a0eb7d119_zpsz5lhffej.jpg
SQUEE CHERRY. He's..kinda cute LOL (yeah I have the weirdest obessions :P)

I also think the last paragraph in his book is interesting: "And I tell you, if you have the desire for knowledge and the power to give it physical expression, go out and explore. If you are a brave man you will do nothing: if you are fearful you may do much, for none but cowards have need to prove their bravery. Some will tell you that you are mad, and nearly all will say, 'What is the use?' For we are a nation of shopkeepers, and no shopkeeper will look at research which will not promise him a financial return within a year. And so you will sledge nearly alone, but those with whom you sledge will not be shopkeepers: that is worth a good deal. If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin's egg"

I want to see Scott's hut SO bad..and I read the eggs they carried back are in the Natural History Museum in London..I'VE BEEN THERE! I guess I know where I'm going if I'm ever in London again :P

here's a pic of me squeeing over the book, and then i'll shut up lol )

So Saturday was Dana and Matt's wedding! Before the wedding, mom and I were determined to find more than one or two geocaches, or looking for one and not finding it (caching in such a busy place is hard! Especially when you have to figure out where to park). We ended up finding ELEVEN!! Heck yeahh. I think that's my third best day of caching (my second is 16 I think and my best is 20). That was satisfying lol. After that we got ready for the wedding. It was pretty much the best wedding ever..Dana looked perfect and gorgeous and just bursting with happiness. When the officiator was reading his notes both of them stood there looking at each other bursting with love and happiness. It was so awesome when they were finally pronounced man and wife!! They were made for each other. <3 After that was happy hour or something, or "standing around eating and talking" lol. Mom and I snuck up to our room to get a book since that's neither of our fortes lol. After that was dinner..I met Matt's mom and stepdad, the ones that live in Payson. None of us can get over how dad bought a house in the same town Matt's parents live haha. There was also a photobooth (fun! I'm gonna hang those pics on my fridge :D) and dancing. Mom and I hung back at first (we're the worst dancers ever, and shy lol) but when Uptown Funk came on (a great dancing song!) we decided to go up there. Might as well let loose and have fun! We might have been flailing more than dancing LOL, but whatever. Poor Dana was getting tired though (it was fun dancing with her too! She saw the rare side of me lol). Mom and I left around 11 and Dana said the party wound down around midnight. The Best Man and Maid of Honor made great speeches too, which were 100% true. It was a great night!! So happy they're finally married :D
