1. Mysteries. Do you sleuth alongside Nancy Drew or Miss Marple? Fan of Nero Wolfe? I haven't read any of those, but I do like mysteries! I especially like Nevada Barr and Charles Finch
2. Plan on making a batch of chili? Have a top secret recipe to share? Nope lol
3. Does your car or did a family car have a name? No
4. Did you walk to school with your friends? Take a school bus? In 1st-3rd grade I walked to school (maybe with my brother), and the rest of the time I either took the bus or had my parents take me
5. Ever have someone carry your books home from school? Not that I can remember..

Poor Malaspina Glacier is melting fast. So sad, it's SUCH a cool, unique glacier! I'm so happy when I get to see it from an airplane haha. I wonder if glaciers like Meares are still advancing..

1. What are you using for a face covering when you venture out? A cloth mask mom made
2. What’s a recent cover you like of a song you already liked? I don't think I've heard any recent covers..
3. How good are you at keeping track of food storage container lids? Relatively good, I think
4. When did you last cover for someone? Probably in March?
5. In your residence, what has a special cover? Both volumes of the first edition of The Worst Journey in the World have plastic covers lol

The Midnight Sun Festival is indeed canceled, and the restaurant I go to for my birthday won't be open this summer (I think most of their business is tourist related, and there probably won't be many of those this summer). I understand their decisions, but I'm still sad lol *glares at coronavirus*

I keep forgetting to mention this, but as of last month I've been living in my apartment 10 years..wow! My first night was definitely weird and kinda lonely lol..it's nice having your own space though!

So the first person diagnosed with coronavirus in Fairbanks? I KNOW HIM. He is a companion (I always forget the correct term) for people with disabilities, and regularly brings one of his clients to the bookstore. I knew he had been having trouble with his heart, but I had no idea he needed a transplant..he definitely doesn't need coronavirus on top of that! I hope he recovers and gets a new heart, I'd miss seeing him and his client! We now have 36 cases of the virus, with a lot of them popping up in Anchorage now (none in Fairbanks the last two days). This is one of the craziest things I've ever experienced..

This is a good week to have to "hunker down," because we got nine inches of snow yesterday, and another 3-6 inches is on its way. They said the snow depth measured at 32" this morning, and only the third time in 25 years snow depth of 32" or deeper has been measured..wow. I really miss work haha, but I decided I'd rather be stuck at my parents' house than alone at my apartment. This is all so weird..

22. If you could make a bouquet or arrangement of your three favorite flowers, which three would you choose? Cherry blossoms, fireweed, lilacs

23. What was a favorite book you read when you were a child? Where the Red Fern Grows..still have my beat-up copy <3

24. About how many square feet is your home? Is it too small, too large, or just right for your needs? I'm not sure haha, but it's a medium apartment. My closet could be bigger lol

Aww, yesterday these two came over to say hi and to get some food lol. Mom said she saw them the other day, and other people in the area have seen them as well. So cool seeing them so close safely! I'm always amazed at how big they are haha. Greyboy wasn't sure what to think :P

Awww, I always love seeing them <3

All the volleyball games for the season are now canceled. :( I think they should get an extra two months next season, even the seniors. Evil virus is evil!

14. Do you use rely on one main password for most of your online activity, or do you try to come up with different ones as needed? )

I was going to go to one of my cousin Scott's volleyball games in April, but the conference they're in suspended all games until further notice because of the coronavirus. :( Maybe things will be better in April?? I don't remember this much panic during the swine flu and other viruses, though they might not have been as contagious. It's scary hearing about everything shutting down, even entire countries! I hope it doesn't make it to Alaska! I would feel awful if I was the person who brought it somewhere new. D: I hope things get better soon. Edit: Alaska just announced its first case of coronavirus..oh dear D:

Yay, I finally got all my pictures off Photobucket and on Flickr! That only took three months. O_o I now have 10,736 pics on Flickr..wow haha. I hope I don't have to do that again, that was a lot of work!

Today's trivia: The quietest place in the world is at Building 87 at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington. It set the official world record for silence when the background noise level inside was measured at -20.6 decibels

Yesterday I learned that Marjorie, my landlady of almost ten years, had passed away. I just saw her last week and she seemed fine, so it must have been sudden. I was so surprised and sad..she was always so nice and we had good conversations about cats and stuff lol. She will definitely be missed..it'll probably be hard to replace her, since she'd been working here so long. So sad, and scary to be reminded of mortality D:

Mom asked me to go to bingo with her to help her and her boss celebrate a customer's birthday, so I was like "suree" haha (it was a surprise party, and she started crying! Awww). I still feel weird going there, but it is fun. On one game someone got a bingo, and for some reason after that the caller tells us the next three numbers that would have come up next..if that person hadn't called bingo, I would have gotten it! (It was number 16 too!) Darn haha, maybe next time?? :P

It's supposed to be -29 on Friday and -32 on Saturday..looks like winter has caught up with us now D:

Day 347-351 )

Today's trivia: New Mexico's Department of Transportation added grooves to the section of Route 66 between Albuquerque and Tijeras that play music when you drive over them going the speed limit of 45 mph. The grooves work just like the rumble strips, which vibrate your car if you drift out of your lane. These particular strips are positioned to create different pitches when you drive over them, and if you do, you can clearly hear "American the Beautiful" play through the vibrations in your car's wheels (I want to try that!)

Day 235: A song with a word, term or phrase that doesn't make sense

Jumping up and down the floor
My head is an animal
And once there was an animal
It had a son that mowed the lawn
The son was an OK guy

Of Monsters of Men, I love you, but really?? Haha

Day 236: An old song that's stood the test of time

The Beatles are timeless lol

Ugh, I keep having nightmares about the world ending..the poor rainforest though :(

1. When did you last enjoy some Asian cuisine? I had Thai food last week I think..
2. What’s something you’d like to do in South America? See Perito Moreno Glacier! It's advancing, and looks super cool!

*swoons*
3. What’s a popular tourist thing in Europe you have very little interest in? Art museums..I find them boring
4. Which of Australia’s strange animals do you find most fascinating or adorable? Koalas are pretty cute lol
5. What’s something interesting you just learned about Africa? Nothing recently that I can think of..

A couple people died this week at Valdez Glacier, because they kayaked right up to it and the glacier calved and killed them. D: I actually kayaked up to that glacier a few years ago..yikes! It didn't seem dangerous then, but I guess you never know around glaciers..sad!

Dad was just diagnosed with Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. His feet have been numb and tingly for a couple years, and they finally tested his blood. It's mild and treatable, and people can live for years without treatment. Still scary to read about, but I'm glad it's nothing worse. Hopefully whatever treatment is available can help him..

10 years ago today, I adopted this amazing kitty. <3 When I first went into her cage, she wasted no time in choosing me and winning my heart haha (took about 3 seconds :P). I had to come back to adopt her a couple days later, and when I said her name, she stuck her paw through the cage. She purred all the way home. <3 Her name was Bashful at the time, which didn't suit her at all (she's one of the least bashful kitties I've ever met!), so we changed it to Abby, my favorite character from ER. She's such a nice, loving kitty..besides the vet lol, she's never met a human she didn't like. She definitely makes life better! She is 14 now, but I hope we still have many more years together <3

The first pic I took of her!

Yayy hehe

Andd Irvine got completely annihilated by Hawaii..again. Siigh. They're just on some insanely high different level than everyone except Long Beach..wow. Hawaii's stadium is HUGE..I think I'd need headphones if I was there, it sounded super loud just on the TV! Long Beach beat Santa Barbara, so it's Hawaii vs. Long Beach tonight again..that'll be exciting to watch lol. Now to wait and see if Irvine will make the NCAA tournament..

Day 109: A song you like from someone you consider a one hit wonder )
glacier_kitty: (Default)
I am now back home! The last few days of the vacation were busy, but so much fun. On Friday before the game we drove up to the college (UC Irvine) to scope it out so we knew what we were doing before the game lol (it wasn't far from the hotel, maybe 10-15 minutes away). We bought tickets and found a couple geocaches and then checked out nearby Fashion Island, an indoor/outdoor mall/plaza type thing.it was huge! Most of the clothing stores were nothing I'd like, and amazingly, there was a Barnes and Noble there! I've never seen one in a mall before! I probably spent waaay too much time there, at least two hours LOL..oops. :P I was happy to see a lot of people shopping there <3

After that we relaxed at the hotel and then went back to UC Irvine for the game (and found a couple more caches lol). It was really surreal actually being there! I kept looking for Debbie (Scott's sister), and finally spotted her on the opposite side from us (I sent her a message saying I was coming too). The area was super loud, but it was SO MUCH FUN!! They did really, really well, and it was awesome seeing Scott's famous "Stadick Scream" in person haha. In the second set, they completely annihilated the other team..one player had 3 service aces in a row, and Scott had around 3 blocks as well. They won that set 25-12! (The team they played somehow won one set over Hawaii the week before..no idea how, considering how they played this night..Hawaii is REALLY good.) Before the third set started we went over to where Debbie and her three-year-old daughter Selah were sitting..she was COMPLETELY shocked when she saw us..she thought I was joking when I said I was coming to the game!! We haven't been a huge part of their lives (we first met in 2003), so I thought she'd be like "ehh" about a distant cousin (third cousin, according to my family tree lol) coming to visit, but no, she was very happy to see us! She was sitting in the first row behind where the team hangs out when they're not playing at the moment, and Scott spotted us and waved! (Yay, he remembered us lol.) more under here! )

What a great trip! Exhausting, but fun lol. We had a big sale at work on Saturday, so there will probably be a lot of shelving to do :P

more pics!! )

I have just now heard of the fire at Notre Dame at Paris, and now I want to cry. :( That is so sad!! My heart broke when I saw the video of the spire falling..omg :(
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Hello from California! Yesterday our flight to Anchorage left at 8, so we had to get up at 5 something..ugh. At least we were rewarded with awesome views of Denali, Mt. Foraker and some glaciers! All three of our flights were under three hours because of an awesome tailwind! I watched How to Train Your Dragon (HOW had I never watched it till now?! That movie is amazing! Toothless the dragon reminded me of a cat LOL) and a lot of How to Train Your Dragon 2 (must finish it on the flight back!!). I saw some cool mountains and glaciers flying out of Anchorage, but then on my side it got cloudy! I looked over at the other side and it looked clear for miles! When the clouds did clear, my side was just ocean..it's a good thing I've seen the glaciers on that side before, but I'm always sad to miss them anyway. :P We flew in to John Wayne Airport in Orange County, which I hadn't been to in YEARS. Everything looked so green flying in!! That always amazes me after a long Alaska winter lol. We got our rental car and drove to the hotel in Costa Mesa, which is pretty close to the airport. It was nice to relax, I was SO tired lol..getting up so early makes me feel awful the whole day :P

Today we had breakfast and geocached our way to nearby Newport Beach lol (really stressful when you're not used to lots of traffic and don't know the area!). I think we found 5 or 6. I don't remember ever going to Newport Beach before (as a kid I mostly went to Redondo or Hermosa). It was pretty nice. We got some yummy food (I'm pretty sure California is more expensive than Alaska, wow D:) and walked on the piers and fed some pigeons..poor things must have a rough life, some of them had deformed feet and one had fishing wire wrapped around its feet and maybe part of its wing..OMG so sad. :( :( :( I tried catching it, but it was still too fast for me. :( That probably happens often, sadly, judging by their feet. Poor things. :( After that we relaxed at the hotel and then Aunt Susan met us for dinner..weirdly, she works at Newport Beach! (She lives near Torrance, 37 miles away.) It was nice to see her again! We ate at a Mexican restaurant, where they make guacamole right in front of you! I don't usually like guacamole, but this looked too yummy not to try. It was indeed really good! Fairbanks guacamole is sad LOL. We talked for a couple hours about dad's health and stuff, and then Susan drove us back to the hotel. Nice seeing her again!

Tomorrow is Scott's game, woohoo! I hope they do well lol

I love when I say "Abby!" and she squints at me like this and smiles hehe..I'll never get over how loving she is <3

Yesterday dad had this tingling in his face and blurry vision, so he spent hours at the hospital (I think they did an MRI), but they found nothing wrong, so now he has to see a neurologist. Poor dad, it looks like he's aged five or ten years from all this. :( I just wish he'd find a doctor that will actually help him..

Today is Ryan's 27th birthday..wow, we're getting old LOL

Day 40-41 )

Poor dad..

glacier_kitty: (Default)
It seems that dad has been feeling "off" the last couple weeks..he said he had trouble sleeping and was tired of the winter (he says that every year though). Yesterday I found out that he has been struggling with crippling anxiety. TW: anxiety talk )

Day 33-34 )
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Denise had to put to sleep her last surviving cat today..he had kidney issues, and seemed to be doing well last week, but he took a turn for the worse this weekend and couldn't recover. He was only 10 years old. :( She had to put her other cats to sleep last year and in 2017, so my heart just breaks for her. It's never easy to say goodbye to a pet you love :(

It's so cold outside (-30) that my heat refuses to go past 61..maintenance said all their properties have been having that problem, and they can't do anything about it till the cold spell breaks..ouch. Luckily I have a little portable heater, my hands would be like ice cubes otherwise!

Day 7: A song that wrenches your heart out from sadness )

Today's trivia: The tallest tree in the world is Hyperion, a redwood in California. It was discovered in 2006, and is 379.7 feet tall
glacier_kitty: (iceberg)
Teresa, Ron and Stephanie left this morning. :( I always hate having to say goodbye to them, they're so easygoing and happy and fun. Last night we played Scattergories..everyone is always surprised at how good I am at that game haha. Like I said "welwitschia" for a plant that starts with "w" (it's a tree that grows in the desert and can live for thousands of years. It only has two leaves its entire life!). Everyone was like "...yeah, that was my next answer" LOL. Hopefully they can come to Alaska soon, that would be fun!

After they left grandpa took us to his neighbor's house that has a chicken coop and we got some fresh eggs! Their chickens were beautiful and well taken care of. They also had quail and a nice kitty hehe. We hung out for a couple hours and then went back to grandpa's house. I think his cats are relieved they don't have to worry about a dog anymore :P

more pics, including more old family photos! )

November 25 - What’s your favorite dinosaur? Blue from Jurassic World is pretty cool, and of course Littlefoot from The Land Before Time lol
glacier_kitty: (Default)

Dad's in Payson right now, and last night he called and said he had heard the crash! Today he called and said he had walked over to the crash site, which didn't even take more than five minutes! That's so sad and scary, especially since our house there is in the same neighborhood and right across from the airport too..I always worry about that happening when I hear low flying planes. D: Sadly the pilot died, but the homeowner survived. That's so scary!

After binge-watching Designated Survivor..can Tom Kirkman PLEASE be our president?? Someone needs to make this happen, even if he is fictional LOL. The tough lady FBI agent is super cool too :P

October 14 - Can you play chess? )

7. Scarves or Berets? Scarves
8. Cinnamon or Nutmeg? ALL THE CINNAMON *drool*
9. Reading a Book or Watching a Movie? I like doing both, just depends on my mood and stuff (like on a plane, watching movies makes the time go by a lot faster)
10. Halloweentown or Nightmare Before Christmas? Halloweentown! Mom didn't like me watching it, but I did anyway :P
11. Hot Chocolate or Apple Cider? I don't really like either..
12. Wool Socks or Slippers? Fuzzy socks lol

25. Caramel Apples or Candy Apples? Ew, both look so gross to me
26. Hay Rides or Leaf Peeking? Leaf peeking..so pretty!

Yay mom's back from England! She was very busy, but got a lot done. Too bad the only fun things she and Cindy had time for was dinner in London and watching the play Kinky Boots. We went to dinner and then visited Ryan and Jo, since they got their apartment set up..it's pretty nice, and Ryan loves the big kitchen, since he loves to bake lol

I hate when perfectly fine trees get cut down..there was a big spruce tree I could see from my window and when I walked home a couple days ago I saw it had been cut down!! Sad, I really liked that tree :(

September 15-19 )

Today's trivia: People walked differently in medieval times. They stepped with the ball of the foot first to check the ground for debris, because well-soled shoes were hard to come by
glacier_kitty: (glacier - moraines)
The other day I was cleaning out my filing cabinet and came across high school papers for when the teachers and I met once a year to see how I was doing with autism..I found some interesting things to share lol

They said I had autism *and* a speech impairment?? I've never had one that I know of..strange

"[Heather] reportedly continues to initiate conversations in a very self-centered manner in which she 'wants to talk about what she wants to talk about' and does not engage well in reciprocal conversation"

Ouch! Haha wow. That definitely is a trait of autism, but I didn't think I was *that* bad in high school!

"Heather's pragmatic skills, however, are not age appropriate"

Apparently that means to deal with something in a sensible and realistic way. Now that I can believe, I'd cry and freak out over the smallest things haha

They said I had "superior Broad Reading academic skills for [my] age." Nice. :D I've always loved reading lol

A couple days ago I was in mom's room looking out the window to see if the Northern Lights were out (nope). I could feel stuff on the windowsill, and when I turned to leave I knocked off this ceramic candle holder thing right onto my big toe. Owwww ow ow OWW that was so painful!! I'm lucky my toe didn't get broken! There is a lovely bruise there though. :P Note to self: next time, move the stuff on the windowsill lol

In town there are transfer stations for people who live out of town to dump their trash..there are always people dumpster diving there, and yesterday a lady was pulling out food and putting it on her sled thing! That made me SO sad, and I really wanted to tell her to get into the car and go to Fred Meyer with me so I could get her some good food. I wish people didn't have to live like that :(

September 8-10 )

August 4- Do you enjoy hunting for a bargain? I don't really care lol

August 5 - Do you have any sisters? Tell us about them. I have two half sisters named Kristi and Jenni. Jenni lives in Washington and I think Kristi lives in Idaho or somewhere around there. I think the last time I saw them was in 2005, though I've talked to Jenni on the phone. I wish we were closer (I've tried to no avail, so I've kinda given up :/)

August 6 - Do you have any brothers? Tell us about them. I have a brother named Ryan..he works at the university. He lives part-time with our parents and I think with a friend near the university..I didn't see him at all last weekend lol. He loves baking and watching TV. We're not incredibly close, but at least I get along with him more than when I was a kid :P

August 7 - What is the oldest item you own? Hmm..I think I own a book from the 1800s..

I'm so happy it cooled off..it rained Sunday and Monday, which we definitely needed!

Yesterday there was a plane crash near Denali and four people died and one is unaccounted for..that's really sad and actually freaks me out, since I've flown there many times. D: So sad :(

Today's trivia: During Prohibition, moonshiners would wear "cow shoes." The fancy footwear left hoofprints instead of footprints, helping distillers and smugglers evade police
glacier_kitty: (ice cave)
Yesterday I was at home when all of a sudden I heard screeching tires and then a HUGE bang..I went to the balcony and saw a couple cars and people, but there was a tree blocking most of my view. I figured I would go down and see if anyone needed help or something (even though other people were there), and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious. A bunch of the other residents from the complex were out watching..one saw me and was like "Marjorie [our landlady] just got in a car accident!" Nooo, not kind Marjorie! I walked over to the scene full of dread, but luckily no one was hurt, just shaken up..the same can't be said for her car though..her bumper was ripped almost all the way off, the hood was mashed up and fluid was leaking. What I think happened was Marjorie was driving past an intersection and the other person ran a stop sign, causing her to crash into them. Yikes! Everyone was remarkably calm about the situation. After a police officer arrived, most of the other people left..me and another resident stayed with her for support and help if she needed it. After the paperwork and stuff Marjorie hooked her arm around mine and I walked with her the short distance back to the complex (she left her phone there). She thanked us profusely for staying with her. I saw her today and she said she's still a little shaken up, but otherwise fine, and she thanked me again for helping her. That was definitely scary though..I couldn't believe how loud it was! I hope she can get another car soon..

Ryan bought a condo! He never seemed interested in moving out before, but lately he spends most of his time in his room, and probably just wants his own space (and a bigger kitchen, since he loves to bake). I wonder if he'll let us visit him lol

June 28 - What’s your favorite song? )
