The honorary cat mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, is in bad shape after being attacked by a dog.

Mayor Stubbs, the cat, suffered a fractured sternum and a punctured lung, and already has undergone three hours of surgery, owner Lauri Stec told KTUU.

The part-Manx cat clawed his way onto the political scene of Talkeetna, a town of about 900 people north of Anchorage, through a write-in campaign. He has held the honorary position for more than 15 years.

His election earned him enough press to catapult the town at the base of Mount McKinley into a tourist destination. Mayor Stubbs has tens of thousands of followers on social media. Many Facebook friends are asking how to donate to his medical bills.

Stec said the offending dog was not picked up by animal control because it happened late Saturday evening. But she plans to file a report: "As far as I'm concerned he needs to go away," she said about the dog.

The would-be dog assassin is in hiding, Stec said, and Stubbs is recovering at a veterinarian's office in Wasilla, KTUU reports.

"All I can say right now is he's holding his own," she said.

Poor Stubbs!! I was so sad reading the article on Alaska Dispatch. I hope he'll recover ok, I love seeing him when I go to Talkeetna!

The bookstore was so busy today..maybe everyone's getting ready for winter :P

Fairbanks continues to reinforce the record number of days with temperatures of 80 degrees or higher. The temperature yesterday climbed to 85 degrees at the Fairbanks Airport, which broke the previous record for August 7th of 83 degrees set back in 1968. Fairbanks has now had 35 days this summer with a temperature of 80 degrees or higher and 14 days with a temperature of 85 degrees or higher. The average number of days each summer of 80 degrees or higher is 11 and only 3 days are 85 degrees or higher. The hottest temperature observed this summer was 92 degrees on June 25th and 26th.

Woww..this is crazyy! August is usually rainy and cool! I heard another fire started on the flats (luckily not endangering anything..it seems like a lot of fires happen there). I'm tired of smelling smoke haha. The poor plants all look super stressed and a bunch of spruce trees are dying from beetle damage :(

I got a message on my home phone from a guy investigating the dredge fire and to call him back. Wow! (How did he get my number?? Haha) I should call him back but the phone is scaryyy. D: lol

Mrs. Chippy's Last Expedition: The Remarkable Journal of Shackleton's Polar-Bound Cat by Caroline Alexander (Jul 22-25)

I LOVED Mrs. Chippy's Last Expedition, but the end had me hugging Abby and sobbing haha. After Shackleton's boat got crushed by the ice, they had to shoot all the animals before walking to the mainland. The book was written in Chippy's view, so that made it even worse. The last entry was like "they're looking sad and petting me so long!" *tear* I wish I could find more books written in a cat's point of view..

I don't like that it's August already..it seems time goes by faster and faster every year. D: Summer always goes by too fast..

OmgomgOMG I had no idea this existed!!! That is SO awesome! The glacier looked very impressive when it was surging haha (you can still see where the glacier used to be when you drive by there). I so wish I could have seen that..I wish it would surge again! The poor glacier looked like it had receded even more when I drove past it on Saturday. :( You can barely see the bottom of it from the road. *sniff* The lodge in the video is still there too! I'm so grateful for this video, one of my favorites ever! Thanks, 30s filmmaker! :D (This is what the glacier looks like today)

It's 91 degrees in Fairbanks. D: Way too hot for us! It makes it so hard to think and move around (at least for me). I try to move and it feels like I have a bunch of weights on me. I really don't like it..it's so miserable! I've never seen a summer here this hot before. Yesterday at 8 PM it was still in the 80s! I also read this: The low temperature this morning at the Fairbanks Airport was a balmy 70 degrees. If the temperature remains 70 or warmer through midnight this will be the warmest daily low temperature recorded in Fairbanks in 98 years. The only low temperature warmer than this was 76 degrees that was observed on June 26th 1915...which is a questionable record. In any case...it is very likely that today's low temperature will be one of the warmest ever observed in Fairbanks." Whoa! The weather is crazy this year! (How did I ever survive in Texas??)

This article really depresses me :(

RIP Pat :(

Yesterday I got the news my friend Pat had died (April 15). Dad showed me the obituary and was surprised I didn't already know. I had last seen her 2 or 3 months ago I think. So sad, we always had so much fun together. :( Pat used to live at the same apartment complex I do..she lived down the hallway from me. She also worked at the Literacy Council cleaning books. We quickly formed a close relationship..most Thursdays we would go out to dinner. She also never acted her age and dressed like a teenager haha (she was in her late 70s)..probably one reason we got along so well. She had had a stroke and was on oxygen from emphysema and asked for my help a lot. She'd call and ask for my help and I'd gladly go down the hallway and help her. Sometimes we had movie nights, and once I went with her to her son's house to hang out. She had told me her life was much better with me in it and less lonely. Then Pat got sick and had to go to the hospital..she couldn't work at the Literacy Council anymore and had to move to the Pioneer Home (it was worrying she lived alone). I was definitely sad..I still miss seeing her randomly doing laundry or whatever. I'm glad I got to visit her with Dana at the Pioneer Home last year and that occasionally she would come to the bookstore to buy books. She was fun, caring, understanding and one of the best friends I've ever had. I will always cherish our memories and I'm glad I was there for her in her last years of life. <3 It's gonna be sad never seeing her again..

Today's our last day in Hawaii. :( That make me sad..I like it here. I've become fond of the Hawaiian language too..it's so interesting and hard to pronounce haha. I read in Fairbanks there's freezing rain..ew. I'll be hard going back to reality..especially since school starts the day after we get back home. I'm gonna post the pics I have uploaded so far!

Today was the volcanoes final (I took it in the professor's office haha. It was rather easy) and now the class is over..aw. It was such a great class..one of the best I've ever taken! Now to figure out what to take next semester..

This is the hotel we're staying at in Hawaii. *drools* Aunt Susan got us a good deal (she's a travel agent and has been to Hawaii a LOT). Mom said it's the hotel we stayed at when I first went to Hawaii as a little kid. Cool! It will be awesome :D

Today's trivia: The tower of St. Bride's Church in London inspired the three tiered wedding cake. A London baker decided to copy the idea as a design for fashionable weddings and it has continued to be as popular today as it was almost 300 years ago (I've been there!! We came across it accidentally haha)
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Today in class we talked about glacial landforms, like moraines, erratics, etc. Yess..I've been waiting for her to teach that haha. I love learning about glacial landforms. We only have two lectures left before the final..noooo! Glaciers seems to have gone much faster than earthquakes. Boo :( (The title of the entry is from one of my favorite glacier books..for some reason I love the title of that chapter haha. I also really like the word "mundane" now :P)

I've lost 5 pounds since starting Weight Watchers! I didn't think I could do it haha. It's kind of gotten easier too. Even though it wasn't that long ago I think about my past eating habits and I'm just like "ew!" Like I'd eat half a bag of Chex Mix in one sitting and eat crappy frozen meals every night. I mean I'll still eat cookies and stuff but try to eat healthier during the week. I still have popcorn and SoBe on Fridays. I think the key is just to just moderate what you eat and have more fruit and stuff. I'm rather proud of myself :)

Today I saw a vole in my office haha..it went under a shelf and I don't know what happened to it after that. Weird haha. Then I was biking home and I sped up to catch the light and suddenly this vole appeared. I tried to swerve and miss it..I looked behind me and it was squirming on the ground. I quickly stood my bike up and picked the vole up and got it off the street. I stood petting it hoping it would be ok. Eventually it roused itself and I put it in the grass..when it walked I could see one of its legs wasn't working..oh nooo. :( I hope it can heal! I felt bad, though I'm glad I didn't catch it full on. Poor thing..

Wow..Frank DellaPenna of Cast in Bronze was on America's Got Talent! When I lived in Texas I went to a Renaissance festival called Scarborough Faire and one year he performed there (he plays a carillon) and I fell in love with his music. He came back other years and I'd watch his shows (twice a day even haha) and we'd talk and we became friends..he was special to me. He even invited me backstage once without his mask. I know one of his dreams was to be on TV and get his music out there so I was so happy he was on AGT! I heard the judges didn't like him though..wtf. Another reason not to like that show..one time I watched it and this very talented guy named Luca was voted off..never have liked it much since then (my Luca bias is showing :P). I keep getting comments on my YouTube videos of Frank since he was on the show haha..I hope more people see his awesomeness! Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=de1muOmwBQo

Yesterday I went to the state fair. I had to take advantage of the last of the warm weather haha. Dad dropped me off and I had 3 hours there. I got my Dippin' Dots. :D That's like..a big reason I go to the fair haha..so yummy. I also went to the petting zoo and became a kid again haha. They had rabbits, guinea pigs, sheep or goats, a little horse and chickens. It was awesome..they were so cute. :D I also visited the other animal barns and the horse stalls. I love animals haha. I bought more glacier/mountain pics, a laptop case with a pic of the Northern Lights and mountains and Chad Carpenter's newest Tundra book. He gave me the "Heather discount" since he's seen me so many times..aww. He's so nice hehe. I was definitely tired when I got home :P

One of the people that lives at Southall was there and she said someone was moving into Sally's apartment. I asked if she moved and she said she had knee surgery and the next day was found dead on the floor. Noooo..Sally was so cool!! She used to work at the Literacy Council and was so nice. So sad. She also said Pat wasn't feeling well..the aneurism in her head may be getting bigger and may burst soon..no way to save her then. Omg..I better visit Pat again before that happens. That is SUPER sad..Pat is a great friend :(

Day 91: A picture of something you're completely addicted to )

UAF called yesterday and said the Introduction to Field Methods in Glaciology class was canceled cause not enough people registered. Booo. :( Then later on Facebook I saw something about Girls on Ice, where high schoolers go to the mountains and study things..THEY were gonna go to Gulkana Glacier and study it and present their findings. That made me SUPER jealous and upset. UAF said to try again for the class next summer. I will..PLEASE SIGN UP OTHER PEOPLE! Haha

OMG BLUE SKY! I haven't seen the weather this nice in ages. I'm glad..I was REALLY tired of rain and clouds. Hopefully it'll stay..

I'm very saddened by the rapid retreat of Franz Josef Glacier (in New Zealand), especially since in 2008 it was still advancing. The glacier is known for its dramatic advances and retreats though..maybe in a few years it'll advance again. Poor glacier..

Dana and I are back from Valdez. The weather was somewhat better than yesterday..of course, since we're not on a glacier cruise. :P I actually found a Valdez shirt this time! Finally haha. :P The mountains were gorgeous, but THERE WAS FRESH SNOW ON THEM! DUDE haha. I bet last winter's snow isn't gonna melt by winter. Usually you can see all the glaciers clearly but if you didn't know they were there you wouldn't have seen most of them cause of all the snow. Once we got 50 some miles inland the weather became nice and sunny. There was fresh snow in the Alaska Range too!! Last winter's snow hasn't melted all the way there either. Hopefully some glaciers will be growing now. ;) Mt. Deborah and stuff looked amazingg and so pretty..they're always snowy but the extra snow in the sun was just..*drools* I love mountains. We made it home pretty quickly I think, even after stopping for lunch at Paxson and getting ice cream at Delta Junction. We saw two moose! Her vacation is complete. ;) Haha. Dana leaves soon. *sniff* It was awesome though, sharing Alaska with her. I bet she loved it :D (Pics in the next few days..too tired to upload them now :P)

Grandma died yesterday. She hadn't been doing well so it wasn't unexpected, but still sad. At least it was at home in her bed and she's not suffering anymore. I feel guilty about not seeing her before though..

Dana's coming to visit in July! We may have to do things on our own since mom has to work. Taking the train to Denali would be cool..

Day 92 - Something weird in your house )
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Today was my last day with AmeriCorps. :( Good thing I can still volunteer! They had a smoothie party for me today haha. It was so nice. The bookstore has done so much for me..I wouldn't be the person I am today without it. Tomorrow I leave on my trip! It's getting cloudy though and it's supposed to be cloudy tomorrow too. Oh come onn..it's been sunny all week! :P

Omg..there's a person on the surveys community (spookyg) that keeps making fun of me..like "I'm stupider and sadder than a three legged dog" and no wonder I've never had a boyfriend cause of my survey answers. WTF! This person is in her 20s and lives with her parents, doesn't manage her own money, doesn't have goals, never finished MIDDLE SCHOOL, doesn't care about anything..I could go on. And she has the NERVE to say that about me. I am SO angry right now. I know I shouldn't read her surveys cause they make me crazy but it's like a car wreck..it just draws you in. What a sad person..blah

Speaking of stupidity..I checked someone out today who was buying books on tape and one on CD. The books on tape are on sale but not the CDs. I told her that and she decided not to get it. Then she was like.."it really annoys me you couldn't make a little deal..I'm not gonna donate stuff here anymore!" and a bunch of other things I can't remember now. Sheesh lady, it's not that big of deal! I'm not the one that makes the rules, don't yell at me! It's just THREE dollars anyway! Blahhhh

*breathe* Ok, enough of that. here are pics from my party )
glacier_kitty: (luca - white rose)
Mom said dad's in California and grandma's not doing well..she's basically bedridden and always in pain. Man..I wish I visited her before. :/ I don't know if I could handle seeing someone like that. Death would probably be better, though sad *sniff*

The Chinook brought snow too..at least it's warmer
