Epic sale

Yesterday the bookstore had its semi-annual sale, where almost everything in the front and back is 50% off. Denise said she'd be happy reaching $3000, and Shelby wanted to reach $5000! Me and Denise thought that unlikely (our record was $4000 last year). As soon as we unlocked the doors, TONS of people came pouring in. Usually there's a little lull after an hour or so, but that didn't happen for HOURS. People just kept pouring in..I was amazed at the amount of people in the bookstore at once. In one hour, we did $2000!! An hour or two after that, we broke $4000, still going strong with customers (we had music playing too, which made the atmosphere even more fun..me and a customer broke out singing to "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2." Adam was like "we need no education"?? How dare they play this at the Literacy Council, that's our whole mission!" LOL). We were all amazed. The numbers kept rising..and rising..until I just KNEW we were going to reach $5000! (I was going to leave at 3:30, but there was no way I was going to miss breaking $5000!) And then we did it..we broke $5000!!! I was freaking out haha..everyone was amazed! I think we ended up doing $5600 something..amazing!! It was tiring, but fun. It's crazy how many books were still on the shelves after that though lol. I'm glad I was there to make bookstore history!

15. What was your excuse the last time you arrived late to something? Not sure, I hate being late lol

16. In what way is your life lately imbalanced? I'm tired, possibly from long-haul covid..ugh

Yesterday when I got to work (10 minutes before we opened), the parking lot was already full! After opening the register I said "bring it on!" and people POURED in as soon as we unlocked the door. The first couple hours were crazy, so many people and books going out the door! The customers kept telling me how fun they had shopping lol, they definitely missed that sale. :P I kept checking the total in the register when I had a spare moment..it was awesome when we got over $2000 with hours to spare, and was shocked when we were about to go over $3000. Our best one-day sale ever was $2000 something, and we were definitely going to beat that! And it didn't stop there, I checked near the end of the day and Denise and I couldn't believe our eyes when we broke FOUR THOUSAND dollars!!! That absolutely obliterates the previous record! It was fun, but I was absolutely exhausted by the end (I would try to say something and be too tired to finish talking haha!). It was epic though. Denise closed and saw we were waaay off, but she was too tired to count everything a third time, so she figured we could fix it when we were fresh lol. Indeed, she came in today and recounted everything, and we were only 5 cents short!!! Wowww. That's so awesome. :D We're *definitely* going to be busy shelving and straightening up the store this week LOL

That's incredible..I told Donna to text me after she closes, it'll be epic! (Donna's been working at the bookstore a year now! That was fast lol)

Today mom and I went kayaking on Piledriver Slough with Bonnie (we went geocaching there a couple years ago too)! She and mom and a falling-out for a couple years, but they suddenly seem to be fine with each other again lol. I missed hanging out with her, so that was cool. It takes 2-3 hours if you're just lazily floating along, which is enough for me..it gets uncomfortable sitting for so long! It was nice listening to the Swainson's Thrushes and smelling the spruce forest. <3 We saw a moose too! It was SO HOT though (89)..the breeze felt like it was coming out of an oven! I bet that fire near Murphy Dome has grown a LOT today. Still nice to get out in nature though! It's nice getting better at paddling too :P

Today and yesterday were Customer Appreciation days at work, where most everything in the store was 50% off and there were garage sale type things too..we made over $2000 yesterday!! Awesome. It's fun, but VERY tiring..worth it though!

a few pics from today! )

Day 179. A song that makes you think of the color red: "Crimson Thunder" by HammerFall
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Today was an absolutely GORGEOUS day..we knew it was a good sign when it got sunny when we went to bed yesterday. We called the flightseeing people early since we knew it would fill up quickly, and got a spot soon after that. I was so excited to see glaciers I'd never seen before! We flew over Taku, Hole-in-the-Wall, Norris and East and West Twin Glaciers (and there was one in the distance I didn't know the name of). It was SOOO incredibly awesome..glaciers are one of the coolest things ever!! I kept saying "wow wow WOW" in my head haha. I couldn't believe how gorgeous it was. The pilot said the Taku Glacier was recently advancing, but it stopped for the moment..you could see the moraines it had been pushing forward..squee! It's also the deepest and thickest alpine temperate glacier known in the world (4,845 feet thick)!! I was ridiculously sad when we left the glaciers behind LOL. Such incredible scenery. After that we drove to Christine's house..she had a coupon for a free kayak rental, so we got one (she has her own) and went kayaking at Mendenhall Lake! I was hot on shore and didn't bring my jacket, figuring I'd be fine, even though I KNOW it's colder by glaciers lol..needless to say, my hands were freezing. :P Oh welll, it was still awesome. There were some icebergs, and some arctic terns nesting on the shore. I know we went at least a mile in, since we went past Nugget Falls, which is a mile from the visitor center. The people on the shore looked tiny compared to the falls haha. It would have been cool to get closer, but we had to turn in the kayak at 6, so we turned back so we didn't go over that time. After that we went back to the B&B..such a fun day!!

Tomorrow we're leaving and flying to Anchorage, where we'll stay till Sunday. I hope I see more glaciers LOL (I guess I never get tired of them :P)

lots of glacier pics under here :P )

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? 5th grade..my brother showed me "Santa's" signature and told me it looked just like mom's. I was like "oh..ok then" haha. Ryan figured it out way before I did :P
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Not anymore, since I don't get that many presents anymore (which is fine, spending time with family is more important :))
10. How do you decorate your tree? I'm always too lazy to get it out of my closet LOL..oops :P
11. Snow - love it or hate it? I love how peaceful and quiet it is when walking in it, but it can be really hard to walk in when there's a lot of fresh snow (I remember one time being up to my waist in snow when geocaching!)

Today was our Christmas party at work! We had a contest to see who could wear the most "festive" outfit, and this is what mom and I wore!
48218157_2831466803545123_2641364703325978624_n
Everyone LOVED mine lol, Donna actually put someone on hold while on the phone to tell me how awesome it was haha. I am now the Tree Elf. :D I bet mine would have won if Holly hadn't dressed up as a Christmas tree, with a really cool tree hat with presents and stuff and she was wearing a tree skirt over her shirt. It was really cool and creative! I was in the top five though, which is still cool lol. It was fun seeing everyone's outfits! Hopefully I can get the picture of all of us together. We also did the White Elephant gift exchange like usual..I got a box of Ferro Rocher chocolate. Elias got a dog cookie jar and a Chicago Bears shirt..as soon as he saw it he tried tearing off his shirt, and he was SO proud when he finally got to wear it..he walked around babbling and pointing at it and sticking out his chest haha! Elias is so fun..I can't believe he'll turn two already on the 24th! It wasn't exactly the same without Paulette, but it was still festive and fun :)

Yesterday the bookstore made over SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS!! That's incredible! Probably one of our best non-event sale day! I remember the days when $300 was a big deal, now we get disappointed when we end the day at "just" $300. :P It's fun working when it's busy and selling lots of good books :D

→ Comment with "Come at me, bro"
→ I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can get to know you better.
→ Update your journal with the answers to the questions.
→ Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions.

[livejournal.com profile] monkiainen asked me:

1. If you could meet Cherry right now, what would you ask him? Haha honestly, the question I've been dying to ask him is "why did you hate your glasses so much??" It must have been amazing to be able to see after 15 years of not being able to lol, but he seemed ashamed of them..

2. If someone would ask you to go a polar exploration, would you go? How would do prepare for the journey? It would be a lot of work, but I don't think I could say no to an opportunity like that lol. I'd have to get lots of supplies, study maps, exercise so I don't die on the trip lol, and I'd probably need training in ropework and first aid and things like that

3. What is your favourite literary genre and why? I like mysteries, historical ones like Charles Finch and C.J. Sansom, and adventurous type ones like Nevada Barr's..they keep your attention and are exciting to read. Of course I like novels about Antarctica and polar explorers as well, and sci-fi like The Martian (it was hilarious, and a survival story too!). I like adventure in my books :D

4. What has been your worst journey so far? What made it so bad? Physically, the time I had a meltdown on a plane because I couldn't handle sitting in the middle seat..I just started sobbing and begging Ryan to trade places with me, but he wouldn't. Amazingly, the person sitting by the window seat saw how upset I was, and she traded places with me! Mom gave me her iPad so I could listen to Enya, both of which helped calm me down. But what I call MY "Winter Journey" was my depression in 2015..I felt anxious and angry all the time and didn't know why, and didn't enjoy things I normally would have loved. I'd just lay in bed crying and think of hurting myself with Abby's claws. I was always in pain from being so tense. I knew I had to get help when I just wanted to end it all and actually got partway out of bed. That scares me every time I think about it. D: Thankfully my doctor heard my pleas for help and gave me the amazing Prozac, which has (probably literally) been a lifesaver. Depression is definitely not something to take lightly!

5. Your favourite Simon's Cat episode and why? Hmm..maybe Cat Man Do, where the cat is doing anything he can to wake up Simon. It reminds me of Abby, especially the paw on the face haha

Look what someone donated to us at work!

A SIGNED copy of a book by famous polar explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson?!!? He might not have been the nicest guy (he abandoned his ship because he was bored, the ship sank and a bunch of people died), but wow!! I snatched that right up haha (it was surprisingly cheap!). My job is so cool lol

I'm...distantly related to Cherry?!? I secretly wanted it to tell me I was related to him, but I didn't think it ACTUALLY would! The last name "Drake" popped up in my tree, and I knew Cherry was related to people with the last name Drake, so I had to research it. I guess you could be distantly related to a lot of people if you research as deeply as I have, but it's still cool lol (maybe that's why I feel so connected to him..we definitely are very alike!). Yay, that's so awesome!!

Tonight we're under a FROST advisory..it could get in the 20s and 30s in low-lying areas!! That sure was a short summer :P

Today is my 10 year anniversary of moving to Alaska!! I can't believe it's been 10 years already! It's so weird to think of my life before coming up here..it feels like it was from another lifetime (not much happened at the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 before I moved up here..my LJ entries from then are really boring haha). I'm pretty sure I'm a completely different person now. It was VERY hard moving, and a huge culture shock. I remember before leaving Texas I was looking at the scenery and was like "wow, I'm so proud to be a Texan," or something like that, and when I came back a year later and looked at the same scenery..nothing. It was so weird! I wonder what I saw before, because it just looked boring to me after LOL. It was around 9 or 10 degrees when I landed and I was just wearing a light leather jacket, so I was FREEZING haha. I still remember the first time the thermometer reached 0 degrees, seeing my first moose, and seeing the Northern Light for the first time (they were awesomely purple!), I remember feeling so lonely and left out the first time I went to the Midnight Sun Festival because I didn't know anyone, and now I pretty much always see someone I know. I've had SO many amazing experiences here, it's such a great place! Here's to many more great years and experiences <3

Have I ever mentioned how much I LOVE Cherry's signature??

I have here..VOLUME 2 OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE WORST JOURNEY IN THE WORLD!! My apartment is blessed with its presence LOL (it's pretty rare! I wonder how many other people have one..). It's pretty beat up, but good enough for me! Super cool :D (the frontispiece, which is a fancy term for "picture at the beginning of a book," is one of Wilson's drawings. I've been wanting to use "frontispiece" in casual conversation LOL)

Two tickets to the play in February, TERRA NOVA, BASED ON ROBERT FALCON SCOTT'S EXPEDITION!!!!??!! In Fairbanks??! *FLAILS!!!!!* OMG that is AMAZING (she asked my mom first if she thought I would like it..how could she even have any doubt haha??). I wonder if Cherry will be in it?? I so can't wait, I bet I'll just be smiling stupidly during the whole play LOL. Denise, wow, I don't think I could get her a gift that cool! I gave her a giant hug. :D What a perfect gift!! <3 (My expression says it all LOL)

She also got me this cool penguin blanket:

Today at work I was checking a customer out..she paid with a credit card, and I saw her last name was Cherry. I couldn't help saying "oh my gosh!" to myself lol, and she was like "what?" I told her there was a famous explorer I like with that name, and I expected her to look at me like I was insane or something, but I didn't expect THIS: "oh, Apsley Cherry-Garrard? I'm distantly related to him! My grandma used to tell me stories about him"

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!
OMG
OMG
NO WAY

I completely freaked out and just stood there in awe LOL. A distant relative of Cherry lives in Fairbanks, Alaska!??! What are the chances of that?? She said she had read The Worst Journey in the World and Sarah Wheeler's biography of him, and that her grandparents had gone to Antarctica. OMG. She must have seen how shocked I was, because she was like "I hope you don't have to use your brain now" LOL. Wow! I went back to tell Denise ("you'll never believe who I just saw!!!") and she said I HAD to call mom because I was just vibrating and she didn't want me to explode LOL (I was literally walking around in circles haha!). Mom was disappointed I didn't get her phone number lol..I hope she comes in again so we can talk more! That is absolutely amazing and completely made my day..wow!

September 13: Comfort )

Today's trivia: Sleeping on the job is acceptable in Japan, as it is seen as exhaustion from working too hard
glacier_kitty: (Default)
On Saturday, it rained most of the day..it was alright though, since I wasn't on a glacier cruise. :P Mom and I went into "town" (Gustavus, 9 miles from our hotel) for something to do. We didn't have a lot of time (maybe an hour and a half..the hotels have great van schedules for people to get around). We looked in a couple stores, and then walked to a geocache 1.3 miles away (good thing we found it after all that lol). We had to hurry on the way back so we didn't miss the van..mom called it a "forced march" haha. Mom can walk a lot faster than me so she went ahead to catch the van, so I just started muttering "stick it, you've got it in the neck, stick it" the rest of the way back..not sure how Cherry thought of that, but it works LOL. We just hung out at the hotel the rest of the day..

Yesterday we went whale watching before our flight left (everything's very coordinated with the flights, that's why the glacier tour boat had to come back so early). We went near Point Adolphus (a famous whale watching area, unfortunately not named for Adolphus Greely LOL) and saw lots of whales! All around us were rain showers, but above us was some blue sky and the sun sometimes came out! What!! Mom and I have crazy weather powers, I can't get over it haha. We also saw some sea otters, lots of jumping fish, a sea lion eating a fish and birds practically flying in its mouth to try to steal the fish haha, and a bald eagle. After that it was time to leave. *sniff* Andd the good weather followed us back again..the van drivers said it was the nicest day in they didn't know how long..wow (mom also woke up with a cold this day..I was thinking "I hope I don't ge--NOOOO I DRANK OUT OF MOM'S WATER BOTTLE YESTERDAY [Saturday]." I even said "you don't have germs!" How's that for irony. :P I hope I don't get sick too!!)

We were able to grab the geocache at the airport before we left. I didn't think we were going to stop at Juneau this time since our tickets said Gustavus to Anchorage, but we did..that's the normal thing I think, and the people going to Anchorage just stay on board (if I lived in Juneau, I would go to Glacier Bay at least once a year! It's such an easy and short journey from there). And weirdly enough, it was cloudy in Juneau, but after we landed the sun came out!! I guess if you want sunny weather, travel with me. :P I was on the wrong side for Mendenhall Glacier again, but I did get a pic of it from the runway. The pilot said the Fairweathers were on that side too, which made me briefly disappointed. But THEN..OMG. I saw some glaciers and mountains through the clouds, then all of a sudden I looked down and see the epicness that is Malaspina Glacier!!! It's HUGE, the biggest piedmont glacier in the world. I saw some of it on the ferry a few years ago, and maybe night flights, but I was definitely not prepared for how AWESOME it was! It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen! Mt. St. Elias and Mt. Logan (the second highest mountain in North America, after Denali) were also out and there were icefields and glaciers everywhere!! OMG I was squeeing so much haha. I was definitely glad my seat was on the right side then! Definitely one of the best flights ever!! I love Alaska so much. <3 I didn't like seeing the citiness of Anchorage after the Perfect Glacier Paradise haha. I didn't see Denali on the flight to Fairbanks, but the sunset was nice. I'll definitely have to go back to Glacier Bay, that place is amazing!!

Yesterday mom and I flew to Glacier Bay..first we had to fly to Anchorage. Denali was out, but the engine was in the exact viewing point as the mountain..good thing I've seen it many times lol (I saw one of its glaciers through the clouds, possibly Eldridge). After that short flight we flew to Juneau..I saw some cool glaciers before it clouded up..I'm pretty sure one of them was Harvard Glacier! It has super awesome moraines. :D It usually takes an hour and some minutes to fly to Juneau from Anchorage, but the bad weather made the traffic back up, so we had to divert to Sitka to get more fuel. I'd never seen Sitka before, so that was cool lol. Eventually we took off and got to Juneau just fine..I'd never been to the airport in Juneau (dad and I stopped there on the ferry through the Inside Passage a few years ago), so that was cool to see too (we saw an eagle!). After a little time to kill there, we boarded the plane for Gustavus/Glacier Bay. I looked for Mendenhall Glacier, but it was on the other side! At least I got a glimpse of it. :P If I thought the flight from Fairbanks to Anchorage was short, it has nothing on Glacier Bay..it only took like 20 minutes! Probably the shortest flight I've ever been on lol. After we landed a bus took everyone to their respective hotels. After we got our room (which has great pics of glaciers lol) we explored outside..there are baneberries EVERYWHERE, which are super poisonous. D: We stopped in the Visitor Center..I showed the Park Ranger lady my pic of Harvard Glacier and she was like "wow, this picture is amazing!! Check out the moraines, it's like moraine pie!" OMG lol..I've compared moraines to chocolate on ice cream, but never pie! Awesome. :P I love seeing others get excited over glaciers too! This Tlingit lady gave us a presentation telling of their history in Glacier Bay..they kept almost getting wiped out by natural disasters, but always managed to survive..wow. After that we had dinner and went back to our room (which doesn't have wi-fi, boo! We have to go in the main building of the lodge for it)

Today at work I was cleaning books when I came across one called Approaching Ice..of course anything with ice in the title is going to catch my eye, so I opened it up and saw it was a poetry book. I normally don't care about poetry, but in the table of contents I saw polar explorers' names as the title of the poetry! I flipped through it excitedly and all of a sudden came across one called "Polar Explorer Apsley Cherry-Garrard"!!! I completely squeed and freaked out (I couldn't stop saying "oh my gosh!! to everyone haha) and ran up to Becky and Denise and tried not to squeak too much LOL as I was like "THERE'S A POEM ABOUT CHERRY IN THIS BOOK!!!" They thought it was hilarious that my hands were shaking because I was so excited haha. I love my job, I always find such cool and unexpected things! Denise was like "wow, I wish I was as lucky as you have been this week!"

here's the poem! )

I hope my luck holds this week, because tomorrow I'm flying to GLACIER BAY!! Finally after years of dreaming I get to go there. :D The weather is supposed to be rainy, but I always like hope they're wrong and bring the sun with me (it's happened before lol). Even if it does rain, there's no way I'm letting that ruin Glacier Bay for me! So excited!!

It is official now..they called me and said my duck was the Wild Duck and I could pick up the check at their office! Cool! I thought about using it for a flightseeing tour in Glacier Bay, but I'll just have to see what the weather is like when I'm there..

Today was the annual Rubber Ducky Race on the river..always amusing seeing thousands of ducks floating down the river haha. I had only bought one ticket, but it felt "lucky" somehow. While mom and I waited for the (unofficial) results to be posted, we went to that store with all those awesome polar books..we were finally able to go down into the basement! There are LOTS of cool old books down there, but the guy showed me the little polar section, since he knows that's what I like. And OMG..I found a 1951 edition of The Worst Journey in the World!!!! Mom thought my reaction was hilarious..I grabbed it and hugged it LOL (Cherry was still alive when that edition came out!!). I also found a book of Edward Evans' Antarctic diaries (he was with Scott too). I was also excited to find that one, since I'm trying to collect all the diaries/memoirs from the people on Scott's expedition. That was AWESOME and I'm so happy I was finally able to go down there haha. Some of the other polar books looked cool too, but I saved those for next time lol. After that we went to check the (unofficial) results of the race..I told mom my number and she was like "hey, there it is!" Mine was the Wild Duck, which I think they pick randomly. We looked at my ticket for the prize and mom was like "...did you just win $500?!?" OMG. There are 7000 or 8000 ducks, so that is pretty awesome, especially if they just picked it randomly!! I knew I felt lucky for a reason haha. Mom was like "I'm so honored to be in your presence right now" LOL (she didn't win anything though, even though she bought four tickets!). Wow. I guess they'll call me when the "official" results are in (and hope that they didn't make a typo lol). Wow, what an awesome day!!

Cambridge animator quits Disney to work on comic about the British Antarctic expedition

This Cambridge animator is my friend [livejournal.com profile] twirlynoodle, and she recently finished part of the comic book (when Cherry and a couple others got stuck on an ice floe with their ponies), and IT IS THE COOLEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN. I was practically crying reading it because of how much I love this expedition LOL and how awesome it was, and I can't believe I found someone else who likes the Terra Nova Expedition as much as I do! (Or maybe more lol, since she actually moved to Cambridge from California to be closer to the Scott Polar Research Institute. JEALOUS.) This sentence is also VERY true: "[the Expedition] got its claws into me that I wasn't expecting and didn't let go." Totally!! Even when I wasn't into it like I am now, after I read The Worst Journey in the World, it stuck with me, hovering in the back of my mind, because the story was so amazing. I can't wait for the other parts of the comic book, it's going to be SO awesome!!! I can't thank Sarah enough for doing this <3

I may not want my own kids, but I adore Elias (Mike and Laura's adopted son). He's so social and easygoing and super expressive (he's around 6 or 7 months old I think). He always smiles so big when he sees me, which makes my heart melt LOL (he guess he adores me too, he doesn't always smile like that with everyone..aww). He's pretty much the coolest baby I've ever met :P (heh, never thought I'd be squeeing over babies LOL)
