A book that starts with the letter "Z": The Z Murders by J. Jefferson Farjeon (Feb 2-4). Ugh, one of the worst mysteries I've read. Main character comes across this women, breaks into her house, chases her all across England..? Such a dumb and unrealistic plot

A book that features a platonic friendship between a man and woman: Borrowed Crime by Laurie Cass (Feb 5-9). Yay Minnie and kitty Eddie and their bookmobile! It seems unrealistic how many murders an ordinary librarian comes across (there are 13 books in the series!), but they are definitely fun reads!

A book with "pop" or "sugar" in the title: Blood & Sugar by Laura Shepherd-Robinson (Feb 10-16). A mystery in 1700s in England, after the main character fought in the American Revolutionary War. His leg got injured and he was invalided home (I like how he kept referring to his "infirmity"..I like reading books with disabled characters!). It was interesting reading about the Revolution from England's side! His abolitionist friend got murdered investigating a slave ship, and he continues the investigation, almost getting murdered several times. I love reading history along with mysteries as well, especially when I learn new facts!

A book about a mob (fiction or nonfiction): Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman (Feb 17-26). I loved this!!! I knew I HAD to read it when I read this on the back cover: "You know what's worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat...Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world." So fun! Donut is so sassy haha. Carl was in his boxers when the dungeon opened, and the game AI refuses to give him pants LOL (the Crawlers get rewards when the kill a boss, level up, etc). I definitely need the next one in the series!

A book about Afrofuturism: Binti: Home by Nnedi Okorafor (Feb 28). I read the first one for another Afrofuture prompt a few years ago. Somehow solving (she calls it "treeing") math problems in her head makes her calmer..I'd rather listen to Gregorian Chant LOL, but whatever helps her, I guess. :P Not the most exciting series, but they are relatively quick reads

Not the best month for reading..I'm still in pain, and will probably have to call the dentist tomorrow. Ugh, so annoying..

I forgot to mention that Feb 26 was my 8-year anniversary of going to Wheathampstead and Cherry's grave..I can't believe it's been that long already! Such an amazing trip <3

28. What is your favorite thing about Friday nights right now? Relaxing at my parents' house, eating popcorn, going to book club, reading in bed..

March 1: What was the last thing you talked about with your mother? Hmm..not sure, maybe something food related?
glacier_kitty: (Default)
1. How confidently do you open a bottle of wine or champagne? I don't think I've ever tried lol
2. When did you last cut something with scissors? Yesterday
3. Which of your household tools is fancier than necessary? I don't think any of them are super fancy..
4. When did you last wield a hammer? Years ago
5. What is your can opener like? I probably have one, but I don't think I've ever used it..it's probably a regular one though..

I've still been in a LOT of pain since I got my tooth pulled, a very deep ache, which is exhausting and makes my head feel fuzzy. I finally couldn't take it anymore and went to the clinic (my dentist is closed on Fridays)..he prescribed a high dose of Motrin and antibiotics (he said the extraction site looked a little angry). Hopefully that'll help! I feel like I've been in pain this whole month, ugh. I'm ready to feel normal again lol. I also went to the eye doctor (my vision has gotten a little blurry), and I'm back to -7 in my right eye, yayy me. :P My prisms changed the most, so much that he can't put the full strength in my lenses, but should be able to see well most of the time. I hope I can keep my current frames, I get compliments on them and I love the color!

And here's yet another pic of Curti being cute hehe:
643438936_35039262425672143_8025625180872893871_n
"If I fits, I sits!!" Awww! His facial structure makes him look perpetually surprised lol

Fairbanks has gotten SO much snow this month! We got 10 inches of snow between the 18th and 19th. We got almost two feet in 10 days!! Schools and work were closed yesterday. The piles of snow in town are huge! A cold front then came through and the lows are forecasted to be in the -40s Thursday through Saturday! That's crazy, it's almost March! Work will close again if it's -40 at 7 AM. This winter has definitely been crazy..we probably broke a bunch of records lol

Last year I had to get my upper molar on the right side of my mouth taken out after chomping on a popcorn kernel. I had a regular cleaning/x-rays a couple weeks ago and my lower tooth on that same side showed a lot of decay (it was hard to brush it properly, I guess), so I had that one pulled a couple days ago (he said it would have cracked if they hadn't taken it out). My TMJ disorder has not been happy..ouch. The dentist said the rest of my teeth are fine, hopefully they'll stay that way. :P Between migraines and now this, I've been in pain way too much lately! Hopefully things will calm down soon lol

It's hard to read when Curti does this:
641558239_35005401729058213_8739034148154107763_n
He loves curling up on my chest, even if he is too big. :P Our bond is definitely getting stronger <3

pokemon update )

21. Describe a time when you felt like life was spinning out of control: Maybe that year of depression..awful

22. What's something that you're currently excited about? Book club on Friday! It's not through the bookstore anymore, one of the members decided to do it on her own because it was fun. We're reading The House in the Cerulean Sea..I've been curious about it for awhile. I hope it's good!

23. What made you laugh today? That was Monday..when the dentist asked if I wanted to keep my decayed tooth haha..not really, but it was interesting to look at :P

24. What are you watching on television these days? I don't really watch TV much anymore, even on my laptop. I've been watching a lot of police bodycam videos on YouTube though..crazy how people talk themselves into getting arrested!

25. What are three things from this past month that have been surprising? The snow; the cold returning; dad picking me up to drive me to work, which he hadn't done in MONTHS. Nice that he's feeling better!
glacier_kitty: (Default)
1. What has recently tugged at your heart strings? At work Danae has been working to clear snow around the building at work, but there's still a "ledge" there (she only has so many spoons..more than me though lol). Yesterday a customer in a wheelchair couldn't get over the ledge, so she had to get out of her wheelchair so her bus driver could get it over the hump, and then the lady had to CRAWL over to where her wheelchair was! I saw her do that one other time at the bookstore's previous location, and about died because I thought she had fallen! It was upsetting to both Danae and I..the customer didn't seem too fazed, but it's still not ok! Alaska is definitely not a great place for wheelchairs. The lady is pretty tough though, she was telling me about the snow she had to shovel around her house..she must have great upper body strength! We were glad when she got safely on the bus, phew!
2. How much yarn do you have in your house? I have a couple things made from yarn, if that counts..
3. When did you last throw someone a line, or when did someone last throw you a line? Danae and I help each other out at work, if that counts
4. With whom are your conversations a tightrope-walk? Shelby..she's very intimidating! Not very empathetic either :/
5. When did you most recently rope someone in to something they were reluctant to do? Maybe when I saw the doctor's assistant on Monday..

It's chilly out, but SO nice and sunny for once! The brightness hurt my eyes after so many gloomy days (we got almost two feet of snow in ten days!). It's exhilarating not having a migraine! The customers were happy too lol. It's not going to last though..an even bigger storm is expected to arrive Sunday and last until Tuesday. They're predicting total snow accumulations between 8 and 16 inches!!! D: That's crazy, we have enough snow now!! I hope I don't get migraines again, though thankfully I have that awesome new medicine lol

This morning I went to put my boot on and felt something in it..Curti left me a gift of his favorite white mouse toy! Awwww, he loves me!! So cute and touching <3

20. What is family life like right now? )
glacier_kitty: (Default)
After two weeks of migraines, I had to go to the doctor this week..I was taking combinations of Excedrin, Motrin and Tylenol, which hardly did anything. My face hurt and my anxiety spiked..I had to take a Clonazepam for the first time in months. I asked the doctor's assistant to raise my dose of Amitriptyline..she was hesitant because it can make my heart beat fast (I'm on medicine for that too though), but relented when I said it just needed to be temporary, to get the migraine attack under control. She also prescribed Rizatriptan, specifically for migraine attacks, to take as needed (I was prescribed Imitrex years ago for the same thing, but it wasn't that great). The sky actually cleared that day, and the migraine ~magically~ decided to get better, though I felt super fuzzy and hung over, and felt the same the next day..another storm came through after I got off work, and I could just FEEL the barometric pressure pressing down on my head. I took the Rizatriptan (and Excedrin, just to be safe), which was AWESOME!!! It works even better than Excedrin..I love the blissful feeling of finally being migraine-free!! It kept snowing yesterday, and today I woke up feeling awful..I could hardly wake up and I just felt..sandy-eyed?? Hard to explain haha. My vision has been blurry too, but that's a normal temporary side effect of a higher dose of Amitriptyline. It wasn't snowing quite as much as before, so I was like "what's going on??" At work I had the awful pressure feeling on my head and kept stuttering, so I took the new medicine again. Very soon after that, it started snowing like CRAZY! The new meds worked their magic and felt better after that. I'd rather not be a human barometer haha. The wind also picked up, which made walking to the bus stop so much fun. :P I'm surprised the schools didn't close (the Literacy Council closes when the schools do, so we stayed open..hardly anyone came in to the bookstore). Whoever wrote "Let it Snow" never had to deal with migraines or shoveling snow..ugh. There's going to be a break, but unfortunately, the snow is supposed to start again on Sunday and last until Wednesday..ughhh. Thankfully I have awesome new meds now!!

1. What do you picture when you think of lawyers? A courtroom, lawyers arguing/defending, lots of money to pay haha, etc
2. What do you picture when you think of accountants? Someone in an office on a computer, doing mathy stuff :P
3. What do you picture when you think of clergy? Catholic priests in fancy robes, and maybe carrying candles, fancy churches, etc
4. What do you picture when you think of garbagemen? Men on trucks jumping down and getting trash out of trash cans. I also wonder if they realize how important they are..when it was -40, the garbagemen couldn't collect the trash, and it all piled up..it made the hallway where I live smell awful! Pretty crazy lol
5. What do you picture when you think of a best friend? Dana, fun times with friends, a supportive/happy person, San Diego, etc

Ugh, my migraines have been worse this month..I might need a higher dose of Amitriptyline. Yesterday I checked the weather and it said a big snowstorm is coming tonight/early tomorrow..yep, that'll do it (Danae is sensitive and could feel it too). Annoying lol

1. What’s a stupid lyric from a song you like? From "Dirty Paws" by Of Monsters and Men:
Jumping up and down the floor
My head is an animal
And once there was an animal
It had a son that mowed the lawn
The son was an OK guy

Huh?? Haha

2. What’s a pretty good lyric from a song you dislike? Not sure..
3. What’s a good non-Weird-Al-Yankovic lyric about food and drink? I LOVE the food references in "One Week" by the Barenaked Ladies: "I summon fish to the dish," "Chickity China the Chinese chicken, you have a drumstick and your brain stops tickin'," "I like vanilla, it's the finest of the flavors," etc. So fun!
4. What’s a good song lyric to describe your week? "Tumble out of bed and I stumble to the kitchen, pour myself a cup of ambition and yawn and stretch and try to come to life"-"9 to 5" by Dolly Parton. I'm not a morning person haha, and I've been pretty tired this week
5. What’s a good song lyric about inclement weather? From "Tip of the Iceberg" by Owl City:
Welcome back, winter, once again
And put on your warm fuzzy sweater 'cause you'll feel much better when
The snowflakes fall gently to the ground
The temperature drops and your shivers freeze all the rivers around

Danae was having so much fun on her first 50% off sale today! It is addictive and fun..the customers have fun buying stacks of books and their happiness bleeds into Danae and I. We work so well together! There were way more people this time around, which was awesome. It'll be cool seeing how much the store made when I go to work tomorrow! SO happy people haven't forgotten us. <3 A customer called earlier and asked if we had The Worst Journey in the World! I kiiinda had to gush about how it was one of my favorite books LOL, and that I visited Cherry's grave in 2018. He probably wasn't expecting that haha, oops. :P I put him on the request list for it..hopefully we'll get in an edition I have already lol

6. Where do you want to live when you are old? )

People donate the coolest things at work, like this super cool maritime compass!

Tomorrow at work is another First Friday 50% off sale..hopefully it'll be busy, since people have been discovering us again!

A book set in Michigan or written by an author from Michigan: Lending a Paw by Laurie Cass (Dec 31-4). The main character drives a bookmobile from her library, and her cat stows away, which all the patrons love. The character kept saying things I related to haha. Then her cat finds a dead body, oh my! (Or as the cat would say, "mrr!") Her descriptions of Michigan sound really pretty, and kind of made me want to visit!

A book with a character who has curly hair: Tailing a Tabby by Laurie Cass (Jan 5-11). I bought the third and fourth book after reading this one, the main character is so relatable! (Though why does she keep finding dead bodies?? Haha) Yay, a fun new series to read!

A book featuring a character with a hidden past: Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys (Jan 11-14). Everyone had secrets! The sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff should be more well-known..it was similar to the Titanic but a lot more people died. So sad!

A book about new beginnings: Poets Square: A Memoir in Thirty Cats by Courtney Gustafson (Jan 15-18). The author moves into a house with 30 feral cats..she feeds them, TNRs them, cares for them, etc, and the cats transform into beautiful healthy cats. The author also rescues other feral/stray cats, and tries to stop their suffering (like she gets one spayed, and the cat is relaxed and happy, and doesn't have to worry about constantly getting pregnant). Very cool!

A book about a horse or with a horse on the cover: Brigands & Breadknives by Travis Baldree (Jan 18-25). Main character has an existential crisis, gets drunk, gets on a cart and falls asleep and finds herself far from home and has adventures. The elf and goblin characters were cool, but the main character's crisis throughout the whole book got annoying. Legends & Lattes is definitely the best in the series so far

A book less than 260 pages: The Four-Poster Bed by Susan Hudson Chellis (Jan 25-28). Obviously I had to read this haha, but it was definitely one of the most poorly written books I've ever read. It desperately needed an editor, and I feel like she used autocorrect a lot. She'd say "boob" instead of "bob," "courtesy" instead of "curtsy," the sentences were repetitive and weird, etc. There wasn't enough about the bed either, which was mostly talked about at the beginning and end. So disappointing :(

A book in a different format than your usual: physical, audio, eBook: The Indestructible Tom Crean: Heroic Explorer of the Antarctic by Jennifer Thermes (Jan 29). I knew this would be painful, so I chose a short picture book..someone on YouTube read it..that always drives me crazy because I can read faster than they can talk haha. Crean really was an amazing guy though..walking 30 some miles to get help for your dying expedition member? Crossing ice with orcas swimming around you (Cherry was there too!)? Crossing the South Georgia mountains with almost no special equipment? Wow. I should find a copy to add to my collection..

That was a super fast month!! How does time somehow get faster every year??

Yesterday at the bookstore was awesome! Since Danae started, the customers have definitely noticed the changed vibes..it's so much busier, with people coming in the instant we open. That's more like it! She's definitely helped save the store and I'm so grateful. It's tiring, but fun too! Yay, happy fun vibes! A customer the other day paid his $57 balance entirely in quarters. O_o That's definitely the most amount of coins I've ever seen someone pay (he said his mom gave him a piggy bank for Christmas haha)

Jan 31. What is your favorite thing about weekends right now? Strawberry milkshakes, playing hidden object/cat games, reading in bed

Feb 1: Write down your fondest memories to do with a childhood pet: Swimming with my dog Max, playing Star Wars Monopoly with the Guinea pigs walking around haha, taking walks with the cats, etc
glacier_kitty: (Default)
1. When did you last enjoy some Asian cuisine? Yesterday
2. What’s something you’d like to do in South America? See Perito Moreno Glacier
3. What’s a popular tourist thing in Europe you have very little interest in? The Tate Modern in London..I find art museums kind of boring
4. Which of Australia’s strange animals do you find most fascinating or adorable? Platypuses are pretty fascinating, like the fact they're venomous mammals!
5. What’s something interesting you just learned about Africa? *googles* Sudan has more pyramids than any other country on earth (223)

Danae has definitely lightened up the bookstore! Since we opened last year the atmosphere has felt oppressive and heavy, which she noticed as soon as she walked in the door the first time. Now there's music playing and another happy presence around! Tomorrow is Juella's last day..I always felt her to be unnecessarily strict and was constantly watching me, which was uncomfortable. Danae and I are also very alike, I'm pretty sure she's autistic too..we even have the same eyeglass prescription! The store has gotten busier, we get donations every day now (I'm so happy when I can say yes when someone asks me haha), and the customers are much happier. It's so cool they still support us and haven't forgotten us, after everything that's happened. Fairbanks has such a great community..if the store was anywhere else, it would have shut down months ago. After the awful summer/fall, it's great to see everyone happily shopping again! Danae and I will definitely keep the fun/positively going :D

My family has been taking turns going to Payson, since dad's feet have gotten worse and can't really travel right now..Ryan and Jo just went, mom and Ryan are going in April, and I'm going with Jo at the end of April. By that time, it will have been a year since I traveled anywhere..way too long! I haven't been there since 2021! Hopefully the weather will be nice

1. How do you feel about passengers riding in front of you reclining their seats? I understand why they're doing it, but it's still annoying, especially when I'm trying to watch something on my laptop lol
2. What single aspect of airplane flight do you dislike the most? Being squished in a germy metal tube next to strangers for hours
3. What was your longest flight on an airplane? At least 9 hours..I watched like 5 or 6 movies haha and saw Greenland from the air, which was SUPER cool!
4. What’s your favorite way to pass the time on a long flight? Watching movies, seeing what's outside the window, reading
5. What are the best and worst things you’ve eaten on a plane or in an airport? I had Mexican food at DFW Airport a couple years ago, and their queso was SO good, my tastebuds had forgotten what GOOD Mexican food tasted like! There's a restaurant at the Seattle Airport that has good Italian food too. I've had airport mac and cheese that wasn't great..there might be other things, but can't think of them at the moment..

Earlier on my lunch break I thought I'd read up on Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica, known as the "Doomsday Glacier" because it could raise sea levels too high, and about died when I read that scientists want to put up a giant sea curtain in front of the glacier to protect it from warm water. There is even a website: The Seabed Curtain Project! They want to curtain a glacier?? That is amazing and super cool, it'll be a fancy glacier haha! It's probably insanely expensive, but still a cool idea

1. What is your favorite movie about a fresh start? The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, maybe? It definitely gets points for partly being filmed in Iceland with Of Monsters and Men playing haha
2. What is your favorite post-apocalyptic movie? The Road was very bleak, but well done too..Viggo Mortensen makes every movie he's in better LOL
3. What is your favorite animal movie? Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, Finding Nemo, etc
4. What is your favorite me-against-nature movie? Twister, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012: Ice Age, etc
5. What is your favorite movie about forgiveness, atonement, or mercy? The whole movie isn't about those things, but both Les Mis and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe have forgiveness/atonement in them

Yesterday, for the first time since December 13, the temperature got above 0, ending a 32 day streak, the second longest since 1908! When I went outside this morning, it was 25 degrees, which felt AWESOME haha. Since the warm wind was pushing the cold up into the hills, the temperature on Birch Hill dropped 20 some degrees in 20 minutes (Bill was watching the thermometer up on Birch Hill on his phone haha)! In the mountains, the wind could gust up to 60-80 MPH! Chinooks are so cool lol. Next week it's supposed to get below 0 again, but at least we get a few days of warmth!

At work we've gotten a few donations here and there the last couple months, and it definitely picked up this month..we EXPLODED with donations yesterday (we have to count everything, and we got in a little over 1200 items!!), and had to put some boxes in the conex! There were a lot of great books that came in, which is awesome..seeing the same books all the time definitely got old lol. I'm glad customers have stayed loyal, last summer was rough!

It was -40 again today, so the bookstore was closed..I wasn't expecting that this morning! We passed another cold milestone too:
615927849_1189303863382987_2573727422283180361_n
The National Weather Service said "With yet another subzero day in Fairbanks today, we have officially reached the 2nd longest stretch of subzero temperatures in Fairbanks since 1904 [did they mean 1918?]. This has been the longest stretch of below zero temperatures in 73 years or since 1953." Wow..though I'm tired of all the people who have been here for decades saying the weather right now isn't a big deal because in the 70s and 80s it got to -50 before Halloween. I wasn't even ALIVE then, of course it's a big deal for people who haven't experienced it! There's going to be a huge change though..on Friday it's supposed to get to 17 ABOVE zero! That's going to feel amazing haha..getting bundled up for subzero weather is tiring :P

My cousin Eric (dad's nephew) passed away from cancer today. He was only in his 50s! I'm sure Uncle Jack is devastated, because he was super devoted to Eric. I *think* I last saw Eric in Hawaii in 2016..I definitely need to see dad's side of the family more often! He loved surfing and bike riding, so hopefully he's having fun in the afterlife doing those things :)

1. What was the last item you returned or exchanged at a store? Does donating books count?
2. When did you last leave the house and then turn right back around and go back inside? This morning, I forgot to put the apple juice I take to work in my bag
3. What’s the latest you’ve ever returned a library book? Not sure..
4. What location among places you’ve traveled would you most like to see again? Carcassonne, Valdez, etc
5. What’s an unlikely movie sequel you’d like to see? I'm sure there's one, but I can't think of it at the moment..

The good news is that Danae (the new Bookstore Manager) is very nice..she's from the village of Unalakleet, kind of near Nome..cool! She jumped right in, greeting customers, shelving, etc. I don't know if I could be that confident on a first day of doing something! The bad news is that Bill is getting laid off next week because our budget is "in the hole" and not great (the bookstore brings in a lot of money for the Literacy Council, and last summer's sale numbers were pretty awful..ouch). He's not upset though, he said he'll find another job (his one year anniversary was this week too, aww!). I'll miss him though, I love his dry sense of humor!

I was right, the bookstore was SUPER busy today! Bill is still sick, so I was the only one at the register (good thing I'm still "refreshed" after the holidays haha). The guy who donates records put a lot of new ones out today, texted the regulars who always buy vinyls, and we sold a TON of those. Lots of donations, lots of sales..we did $800 something, a very good day! A customer came in asking for books about the Karluk expedition, where Stefansson abandoned the boat because he was bored, the ship sank and a a bunch of people died. I have read a bunch of books about the Karluk over the years (The Ice Master, The Karluk's Last Voyage, etc), so I thought it was cool she was asking about them. Then she said "I have the descendant of the last survivor of the Karluk voyage with me, she's in the car." Wait..WHAT?!? There was an Inuit family on the ship, the parents were named Kuraluk and Kiruk (spelling differs depending on who you talk to) and they ARE HER GRANDPARENTS!! They had two kids, Qaualuk and Ruth Makpii/Mugpi Ipalook, and Qaualuk was her mother!! Her aunt, Ruth/Mugpi died in 2008 at 97 years old, and was the last survivor of the expedition to die. Her grandparents definitely helped the expedition members survive..one thing that has stayed with me is that they chewed reindeer hides to make them soft. I've known this customer for years, and had no idea she was friends with someone with connections to the Karluk (she said for 20 years at least!). I asked her if she could ask the lady to come in, and she did, and learned her name was Mabel Kudralook. She remembers her grandparents and their stories. That is AMAZING and I was getting chills hearing her talk about it! I was starstruck haha and got a picture with her!

She grew up in Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow). She was very nice lol. So cool!! Alaska is definitely a small big state!

Here's a pic of her family:
Kurruluk_family
Nice! There are other pics online, like Mugpi looking very happy. It was definitely an eventful day at the bookstore!!

Today's Dictionary.com word of the day is "Panglossian"..I'm pretty sure that was a Biz Bee word at some point lol

6. What was the last movie you watched, and did you like it? )

The past few days, this is what it's looked like outside:
610760795_34140366222228439_1921391985771032147_n
Ice fog is "a suspension of numerous minute ice particles in the air," like exhaust..it can definitely smell bad (when I walked to work, the smell would get in my hair D:). It was -42 when I woke up yesterday morning! Today it's MUCH warmer, -13! It felt downright tropical LOL, and the ice fog went somewhere else. The National Weather Service said "Dec 2025 in Fairbanks was the 8th coldest and 12th snowiest Dec on record. Fairbanks has also seen 29 days+ of temps at or below −15°F." Crazy!

Ryan recently quit his job (probably the happiest I've ever seen him!), so he and Jo have been working hard turning his office into a lava tube/cave. How cool is it?

SUPER cool!!! That's amazing (they're going to fill the gaps at some point, I think). I'm really impressed that they did most of it without my parents' help. Here's another view:

So cool! Maybe he'll let me spend time in there too LOL

Tomorrow I go back to work! (2026 is already going by fast!) It feels like I had been at my parents' house a long time haha. Earlier Shelby texted Bill and I and asked us to come over to their building first for a quick meeting. I'm sure they just want to see us after the break and to meet the new manager, but I'm still panicking haha. I've never been good with the "I need to talk to later" thing. :P Bill said he's been sick the last couple of days, and isn't sure he'll make it in tomorrow. I felt like I was getting sick yesterday, OF COURSE because I was like "but I don't want to go back to work and real life!" I should know better by now lol. Luckily, after saying "wait, just kidding, I DO want to go back to work tomorrow!" some of the day yesterday, I feel better today. Phew! Hopefully he gets well soon. Hopefully it'll be busy since we've been closed since December and people miss us and are tired of being cooped inside lol (I definitely needed that break though, I was SO tired and worn out!)

1. Do you mostly drink tap, filtered, or bottled water? Bottled water, tap if that's my only option..I think it tastes gross (unless I put Emergen-C in it)
2. Is it safe/recommended to drink tap water where you live? If not, why? I just Googled it, and apparently it contains PFAs, chemicals made by humans, like Bromodichloromethane, which can cause cancer..yeah, definitely avoiding that as much as possible O_o
3. What does the tap water taste/smell like where you live? I don't know how to describe it..not fresh, maybe? Probably all those chemicals that are in it D:
4. Do you collect rainwater? If so, what do you use it for? No
5. Do you/have you ever had restrictions on water use where you live? What did you have to change about your lifestyle? When my family lived in the hills, we had a cistern for water, and we either had to pay to get water delivered or fill a tank ourselves at a water station. We had to be careful, like not taking a long shower (and not showering every day), the washing machine was one that used less water, things like that. To this day, I feel guilty if I feel like I'm taking a longer shower than usual :P

I'm..not quite sure about what's happening with LJ, except that only people with certain conditions (a professional/permanent account, for one) will be able to post?? I was confused trying to read everything about it, and the panicked/conflicting comments. I have most things backed up here on Dreamwidth, but LJ is definitely my home, I've used it since 2004! I'm glad there's another blog site to use, but I'll be on LJ until the end, if there is one..

Happy birthday, Cherry! Sarah Airriess, who is making the graphic novels of The Worst Journey in the World, posted about Cherry's voice today on Patreon. Like me, she's always been curious about what his voice sounded like..no recording of his voice has been found (I like to hope a video of him exists in someone's attic somewhere, and one day someone will discover it lol). There's not really a description of his voice by expedition members (for one), except that one of his nicknames was "Chewwy," and another expedition member offered to name a "little pawasite" after him, so maybe he had a speech impediment?? I wonder if his nephew Hugh remembers his voice? I'll have to ask him sometime..

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that on New Year's Eve, Dictionary.com's word of the day was "threshold," and yesterday's word was "first-foot: the first person to cross the threshold of a house on New Year's Day." Nice, I see what you did there :D

2. What's one thing that you hope to achieve or accomplish this year? )

Hello 2026! Amazingly, people in my parents' neighborhood shot up fireworks..I watched some from the warmth of the house LOL. Last month was the coldest December Fairbanks had seen since 1980, with an average temperature of -21.5 degrees..crazy!

Curti and I have been spending the holiday break well:

Awww, somehow he keeps getting cuter! <3 Definitely one reason I can't live without a cat..I feel our connection deeply when he chooses to sit in my lap/shoulder, etc lol

the rest )

The university usually does fireworks on New Year's Eve, but they're postponing it because of the super cold weather and ice fog..good idea lol. As I thought yesterday, Juella texted me and said the bookstore will be closed until Tuesday..also a good idea, though I'm becoming lazy LOL. On Sunday it could get to SIXTY below in low spots east of Fairbanks!! D: That's insane! Fairbanks has one of the biggest temperature inversions on earth. We're in a valley surrounded by hills, where the low air sinks and the warmer air rises up to the hills (you can see where the inversion starts by the plume of smoke from the power plant..it gets flat and stretches across the sky) and there isn't any wind to blow it away..I remember when I lived in the hills the temperature could be 20 degrees warmer than in town! Crazy. Next week it's going to be around -15..heat wave!! Haha

See ya next year :P

31. What are you most looking forward to next year? Reading more good books haha, and I'd really like to take time off and travel somewhere..I haven't gone out of state since May, I think..it's hard when Bill and I are the only ones working the register..hopefully the new manager will help with that..

Wow, only one day left of 2025! This has definitely been a HARD year. The last week has been super cold, in the -30s and -40s. The ice fog was so bad you couldn't see the other side of the lake. Mom and I went to town today because it was "only" -27, and the next few days are going to be in the -30s and -40s again..the high for Saturday is forecasted to be -43!! Depending what weather site you look at, the lows could be in the -50s!!! I've never felt -50 before, but I'm curious to experience it haha. I'm supposed to work Friday and Saturday, but we close if the weather is -40 or colder at 7 AM, so Lucie will probably tell me to stay home. This is definitely one of the longest, harshest cold snaps I've experienced! Curti has been more snuggly too hehe, he's so cute. <3 Here are the highs and lows of 2025!

Lows: Losing Abby in March, which was devastating. We were soulmates..she stole my heart as soon as she sat in my lap at the animal shelter. She loved everyone! At the end she was so weak she'd just fall over when trying to walk on my bed, and had that "I'm done" look in her eyes, and she was SO skinny..I couldn't watch her suffer like that. I sobbed SO hard at the vet, and mom and the vet did as well..I told her how much I loved her and what a great cat she was. I watched her last breath and then she was gone. I got her cremated and have tattoos of her pawprints on my arm. I cried SO hard again when I walked into my apartment without Abby, and saw her water and food bowls on the floor. It was recently after that I went to bed and felt something at my feet..I'm sure it was Abby, telling me she was still with me, just in a different way, and another time I thought I heard her meow. Oof, that always make me very sad when I think about it. I'll never forget her <3

The move at work, which was very rocky and tiring, and then Vicki saying she was quitting after the move happened (I still miss her SO much). Bill and I felt abandoned during the summer and, the managers seemed to do everything in their power to make us suffer. Everyone was always complaining and hardly any customers came in anymore. Bill and I were about ready to quit! Amanda only lasted like a month, we were abandoned again, until we finally got a temporary manager. That's something I hope I never experience again. I hope the manager starting in January is nice!

I sprained my ankle in March. Very painful! In August I exhausted myself and didn't feel well, I had awful face pain and a migraine and a sore tooth, and had to get the tooth pulled. I then threw my back out, all in the same week! I'd rather not experience that again either lol

Dad's mental health hasn't been great since last summer, and his neuropathy is worse..hard to see :(

Highs: After Abby died, I started looking for a new cat. I looked at pictures online, went to a shelter, etc, but there wasn't an instant connection like there was with Abby. One day a picture of a tiny kitten was posted online..I showed mom the picture, and we both felt a connection, a very good feeling like "this kitty is the one!" We cleaned my apartment and got new cat stuff, and then met the owner in town. The kitty was meowing and scared, but as I held him, he relaxed and started purring. I'd been chosen! (Mom originally said no male cats because they might spray..of course a male cat chose me haha.) He explored around my apartment while I thought of a name. I said "hmm, Wilson? Nah," and then thought "can I shorten curtain?" I wrote it out and I was like "oh, curti!" I called it out to him and he responded right away! I said it again and he answered again, which in total happened in like 10 seconds..he approved! I knew he was smart from the very first day. He can be a handful, but he's SO cute and sweet, and has a fun personality. When he curls up in my lap, I think "just another reason I can't live without a cat" haha. I feel the connection deeply when he's on my lap! I'm very glad he chose me <3

I saw the play The Fourposter in April, which I never thought Fairbanks would do. Super cool!

I went to Santa Fe in May and hung out with Aunt Cindy and Uncle Dean and their friends, and saw Drew Lynch live. He's so good at improv and isn't afraid to laugh at his stutter. Pretty cool!

In June, as a birthday present, I went flying around Black Rapids Glacier and the surrounding area with mom and her friend. I wish I had seen more of the glacier, but I still drooled over the snowy landscape..Alaska is just so pretty!

Going to the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics with mom and Ingrid, and helping with the blanket toss, and going to Music With Reindeer with them as well

Those are the major things, at least! I can't wait to do my end of year book post tomorrow, I look forward to it all year haha!
