Today was Becky's "official" retirement party. Mike and his wife came, and I finally got to meet the baby girl they adopted right as Mike was retiring..she is SO cute and happy! It has to be how they're raising her, because Elias was the same way as a baby (and still is super happy!). What great parents! When I saw Elias I was like "hey, I've missed you!" and he gave me his huge cheesy grin, awww. I asked if he was enjoying his baby sister, and he was like "YEP" haha..he is so cool!! Some of the former executive directors and other people told Becky how awesome she was, and how she was always so kind and just a great person. I don't do public speaking lol, so after everyone was done and talking again I went up to her and told her that I'll always remember meeting her, and how she was like "you're getting comfy!" when I put my legs on the couch lol, and since she was the first person to work with me, I told her she's helped me be the person I am today. Too bad I was nervously stuttering by the end lol, but she got the idea lol and gave me a big smile and a hug. She said she's loving retirement, she's been sleeping and doing projects and sleeping more LOL. She definitely helped the Literacy Council be what it is today, and we'll always remember her legacy <3

Here are a couple pics!

Me and Elias!! I love our pictures together! He has the best smile! (I think he turns 5 this year..wow lol)

It's been SO nice out today, though the birch pollen has made my throat and eyes itchy, ugh..I'm glad it's not gloomy like it was last week though :P

1. What should you put aside? I still feel guilty about not being the greatest friend when I was younger and being controlling and stuff..years later I did apologize to that friend and she forgave me and was glad I had changed and been enjoying my life..but I still feel bad, especially when I read entries/comments I made to her or about her back then. It will always hurt somewhat, I think, but I really should move on..
2. When did your heart most recently override your head? Hmm..not sure..
3. What was the victim the last time you raided your fridge in the middle of the night? Water haha
4. What was the subject of your most recently shot smartphone video? I think one of me reciting something Cherry related? (The ones I recorded last year were recorded on my webcam)
5. Who have you avoided? Shady looking people on the street? Haha

Tonight is work's annual Biz Bee fundraiser (it used to be in February, but last year we had to move it to April because of covid, and liked April much better), and Becky, after over 40 years of working for the Literacy Council, retired today. I still remember first meeting her, and she definitely helped me a lot over the years! We had a "fry party" for her today haha, since she has lots of food allergies and fries are one thing she can eat. It'll be weird without her there, though she'll probably still come in and shop for books haha

15. What is the weirdest text or email you've ever received? )
glacier_kitty: (iceberg 2)
1. What are some titles in your to-read stack? That's a lot of books haha..let's see..
One Day the Ice Will Reveal All Its Dead by Clare Dudman
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender
Boar Island by Nevada Barr
Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave
The Life of Captain James Cook by J. C. Beaglehole
Captain Oates: Soldier and Explorer by Sue Limb
2. What are the highlights of this weekend’s to-do list? The annual river regatta is tomorrow..that's always fun lol
3. Which current or upcoming movies are you looking forward to? I really want to see Papillon, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Skyscraper and Aquaman
4. What’s something you meant to do this past week that will have to wait until next week? Organizing a shelf at work
5. What’s an unfinished project (unrelated to media consumption) you haven’t touched in at least a year? I tried to write a book when I was younger, but abandoned it a long time ago lol. It's still saved on my computer though

The Literacy Council changed finance companies, so we had to meet with the financial advisor so we could open our retirement accounts and stuff..he looked at me and said "you're not even 25 right?" and I was like "..I'm 29!" LOL wow. :P I didn't really like him, he treated me like I was dumb..hopefully I won't have to see him much lol

There's another volunteer with Asperger's at work, but she acts like a snobby know-it-all and will not stop talking to you if you let her..she was following Becky around like a dog yesterday. Becky told me today how frustrating she can be, and she was like "not you though, I could be around you all day every day!" Aww lol, I'm glad I'm not annoying :P

I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but Saturday was my 10 year anniversary of volunteering/working at the bookstore!! I've done a LOT of growing since then lol. I still remember meeting Becky for the first time and having her comment on how comfortable I looked on the couch lol (back then, she worked EIGHTY hours a week!! I'm glad she doesn't do that anymore!). It's a very special place to work, and so glad I'm still a part of it <3

After doing more research, I found I'm related to Ann Eliza Isham (7th cousin twice removed), who died during the sinking of the Titanic..wow, that stirred up some powerful feelings. So sad! :(

Today me and a volunteer were talking about mental illness..the director of the Soup Kitchen took his life a couple weeks ago (which is a couple doors down from us, and he used to shop at the bookstore..we were all sad :(), possibly because he stopped taking his meds. I was saying I did the same thing because I thought I was ok, which messed me up for years. I told her that 2015 was the worst year of my life..I had horrible thoughts and I was angry all the time. She said "you were definitely angry when I started volunteering..you would go 'meh' and ignore me when I said hi to you, and one day I asked how you were and you snapped at me and said 'I hate when people ask me that!!'" OMG..I was HORRIFIED!! I knew I was bad, but WOW. D: She knew I was struggling though (she and Becky were VERY worried), and she said now I'm a completely different, happier person and is glad we're friends now lol (I'm still embarrassed I did that though!). I told Becky because I thought she mind find it interesting too, and she was like "yeah, that's the year you hated everyone..we kept getting new volunteers and you just saw the bad in them. It was upsetting to me too!" I do remember that, and the bookstore manager at the time actually had to pull me aside and tell me to give them a chance. I can't believe I let myself get that bad! I must have been so unpleasant to be around lol. The situation with the Stone Soup director hit close to home for me, because that could have been me if I hadn't gotten help when I did (the closest I came was getting somewhat out of bed..it completely freaks me out to think about that D:). Crazy. I am so grateful for Prozac giving me my life back, I know people were very worried about me!

This morning a lady came in and was like "my brain isn't working right..I should be on meth, but it's illegal. I want to make Mexico the 53rd state so it will be legal!" Umm..ok. O_o She said she loved writing on her hand, and if she lived in Israel she would write the prayers on her hands so she could have something besides skin to wash off (me and Paulette: .....) and she just kept saying weird things. Paulette had to tell her to leave because I don't think she trusted her..she got angry and asked me "what is that lady's name that told me to leave?" Umm no, I wasn't going to say a word. She was like "you don't own the building. With or without your names, I'M GOING TO REPORT YOU!! I have advertising!" Eventually we got her to leave, and Paulette told me "if she comes back, come get me and we'll call 911." Wow. Today was very interesting lol

Today I went to lunch with Kathy, and after we're done she was like "I wanted to ask you..has anyone ever told you to say thank you when someone does something nice for you? You never have with me, and it kinda hurt my feelings." I told her that saying thank you is extremely hard for me, not because I don't appreciate it (of course I do!)..it's just one part of my autism I haven't been able to overcome yet (when Nina, who used to be my job coach, and I went to lunch, that subject came up once, and I was like "you know I appreciate it right?" and she said "yes, I can tell by your smile that you are thankful. A lot of my autistic clients are like that"). Kathy was like "that's not an excuse! Someone came up to me once and said that you need to say thank you, since you never do." Wait, what?!? I asked her who had said that and she said "I'm not going to say, it doesn't matter." Then I just started sobbing. She drove me back to work and I just had to hide in my office and cry..I didn't mean to hurt her feelings!! Then I thought of that "someone" who said that behind my back and felt angry and betrayed, like my whole world had just shattered. I've always wondered what people say when I'm not there, and I guess now I know. I haven't felt that depressed in a long time..if you have a problem with me, just come up and talk to me about it! I saw Kathy go into Becky's office..I think she knew that I was hurt and was telling Becky about it. I told Paulette and Denise about it, and they were both very understanding. I know they'll always have my back. <3 Kathy kept trying to talk to me like nothing had even happened, but I was too hurt to talk to her. I had to come home because I was too upset to function properly lol (I took a Xanax and went to bed LOL). I know I need to work on saying thank you, but that was NOT the right way to go about it..it hurts me deeply someone would say that behind my back. I feel better after a nap and writing this, but it still hurts. I think I'll need to talk with Kathy again, when I'm not so upset..I think I hurt her too. :( I'll just have to pick myself up and move on..I know who my true friends are and that means a lot <3

In happier news, I seriously cannot believe it's been a year since I got into polar exploration and Cherry. It was so funny, I was at work and all of a sudden, BAM! I was just sitting there like "CHERRY ANTARCTICA YAY" LOL. Cherry has definitely been an inspiration to me and has helped me through hard times <3

Today at work I was cleaning books when I came across one called Approaching Ice..of course anything with ice in the title is going to catch my eye, so I opened it up and saw it was a poetry book. I normally don't care about poetry, but in the table of contents I saw polar explorers' names as the title of the poetry! I flipped through it excitedly and all of a sudden came across one called "Polar Explorer Apsley Cherry-Garrard"!!! I completely squeed and freaked out (I couldn't stop saying "oh my gosh!! to everyone haha) and ran up to Becky and Denise and tried not to squeak too much LOL as I was like "THERE'S A POEM ABOUT CHERRY IN THIS BOOK!!!" They thought it was hilarious that my hands were shaking because I was so excited haha. I love my job, I always find such cool and unexpected things! Denise was like "wow, I wish I was as lucky as you have been this week!"

here's the poem! )

I hope my luck holds this week, because tomorrow I'm flying to GLACIER BAY!! Finally after years of dreaming I get to go there. :D The weather is supposed to be rainy, but I always like hope they're wrong and bring the sun with me (it's happened before lol). Even if it does rain, there's no way I'm letting that ruin Glacier Bay for me! So excited!!

It is official now..they called me and said my duck was the Wild Duck and I could pick up the check at their office! Cool! I thought about using it for a flightseeing tour in Glacier Bay, but I'll just have to see what the weather is like when I'm there..

The other day Becky came over to me and told me I was eligible for LCA's retirement plan..or whatever it's called haha. She emailed the financial consultant person (yeah, you can see I have a lot of knowledge on this topic LOL) and today she emailed me the forms to fill out to open my account and she walked me through them on the phone. She was like "so what stocks do you want? Do you want them to be aggressive? Are you going to panic if they go down??" and I'm just like "......." LOL. She got that had no idea what to do lol and picked a "moderate" stock plan..I kept spacing out when she was talking to me about stuff since that's such an interesting subject. :P I'd just be like "..uh huh." SO I filled out all the paperwork and Becky's going to send it to her so I can open my account. Yay?? Now I feel super old LOL :P

I also feel old because Harry Potter first came out 20 years ago today. I still remember finding the first book at an airport and reading it on the plane. I also remember going swimming and reading The Goblet of Fire after and getting the pages wet haha (there was also a passage of someone trying to pronounce Hermonie's name that stood out to me too). Then mom read The Order of the Phoenix and told me I couldn't read them anymore because they were getting "too dark" and it led kids to witchcraft (what??). I'm still annoyed at her for that lol (and she *still* thinks they're bad for kids..everyone I know that's read/seen it has had a super positive experience, and sometimes even changed their lives). I tell her they're BOOKS, and a great story of friendship and courage and triumph over evil. Eventually I read the rest of them after I turned 18 lol..it still amazes me how J.K. Rowling tied everything together. I'm so glad that they were a part of my childhood <3

Someone found my geocache today, and they said someone on the balcony helped them find it. That amuses me so much haha..I wonder who lives there, so I can tell them it's cool they help people find it :P

FAIRBANKS - A light earthquake rattled Interior Alaska on Sunday evening.

The quake, with a revised magnitude of 3.8, was centered 36 miles north northeast of North Pole, 19 miles northeast of Chatanika at 9:09 p.m. It was a shallow quake, only about 3 miles below the surface.

The quake was widely felt in the the Two Rivers and Fairbanks area. No damage was reported.

I felt it! It's so weird to just be sitting around and have your chair just randomly start shaking haha. I hadn't felt one in awhile, so I guess it was time :P

Becky returned to work today..she said that Keith had trashed her house as well and ruined some of her furniture. Wow..I can't even imagine what she's going through right now. She said she needs to talk to him while he's still in jail..that's going to be rough. :( He's going to be homeless when he gets out of jail since he's trespassed from Becky's house and where he used to live. Poor Becky :(

I recorded this a few months ago, but some reason never uploaded it till now lol. The House That Cherry Built is a poem in The South Polar Times volume 3..I've never been able to find the whole thing, and the book is over $3,000 (so that's why I wanted to win the Nenana Ice Classic LOL), but I decided to recite some of it anyway (it's in reference to the hut Cherry and co. built near Cape Crozier). Here are the lines:

45114772_2689905787701226_7655148304488988672_n

There's been more Keith drama..Liz lives a couple houses down from where he used to live with his friend, but has since been trespassed from there. Keith went over there yesterday and was arrested, but they let him out of jail (WHY) and he went over there AGAIN. Liz was like "NOPE" and called the police, and he was arrested once again. This morning Liz said he called the Literacy Council from jail (Liz just hung up) and tried to get his stepdad to bail him out (he came home early to make sure things are ok and stuff), but he was like "you're on your own!" so he's still in jail..relieving to hear that, everyone's tired of being on edge and wondering if he'll come to the Literacy Council again. Becky called today and she sounded so sad and hurt and betrayed. :( She is going to sell her truck and get a new one..she wants one Keith won't recognize and get triggered and come to LCA or wherever. Poor Becky, this situation is just awful! I keep telling everyone "things must improve" (I wrote it on Denise's whiteboard lol) and Denise has been really stressed out so I told her an inside joke from high school to hopefully make her laugh: "breathe, in, out, monkey tequila!" and it did, yay! (Denise told that to Becky too and got her laughing as well. :D) I REALLY hope Keith gets some help, he is definitely not in a good state of mind right now D:

Today mom and I drove to Nenana (about an hour away) to see the tripod on the river for the Nenana Ice Classic before the river breaks up (it would have been cool to see it break up, but that would take some crazy luck lol). The watchman said he thought there was a day or two to go before it broke up. I have two guesses for today, tomorrow, and one for Tuesday, so hopefully it'll break up then haha. I love this game :P

This morning Denise called me in tears saying Becky's son Keith got high and then trashed the bookstore early this morning. He's been having issues, but I was still shocked to hear what he did..he knocked over bookshelves, tore down the camera wires from the ceiling so the camera couldn't record him (which luckily failed, they have a video of him. He was crawling on the thin pipes by the ceiling to get to the wires!), threw books everywhere, smashed plant pots and a glass cabinet, destroyed the water cooler, etc. Amazingly enough, someone was riding by on their bike and heard a crash, and called the police when he saw what was going on. Keith had barricaded himself in, but opened the door when he saw the police and said everything was fine because he worked there (WTF). The police eventually got rid of the barricade and Tased Keith, but it still took three officers to get him down and handcuff him. Wow. Becky's out of town, so that makes it even worse for her. As bad at it was though, it could have been worse..the sprinkler system didn't go off (he could have set it off since he was crawling around up there) and he didn't set anything on fire, which would have been a total loss in either case. There's a lot of clean up to do, but we can rebuild and replace what was damaged (as Cherry's friend Wilson said, "things must improve"). Mom and I stopped by after we got back from Nenana..a lot had been cleaned up already, but the pics Denise showed me were awful and sad..why would he want to destroy our awesome bookstore?? I hope he gets some help..wow (he's in jail right now, and definitely not allowed at the bookstore anymore). We will rebuild!!!

FAIRBANKS — The skies began clearing Monday afternoon over the Interior, and the temperatures began dropping.

In addition, the National Weather Service is predicting several snow storms will move north across the Interior, starting tonight.

Monday’s high temperature at Fairbanks International Airport was 1 below just before 6 a.m. Since then, the temperature steadily dropped to 10 below just before 2 p.m.

According to the Weather Service, lows Monday night were to drop to 25 below zero. The north wind could drop the temperature to 40 below with wind chill in areas.

It’s likely Fairbanks won’t have 30 below weather until early next week, Fischer added.

It’s been more than a year since Fairbanks experienced temperatures colder than 25 degrees below zero.

For reference, the coldest temperature recorded last winter was 29 below, in November 2015. It marked 2015-16 as only the second winter in 109 years that did not see 30-below-zero temperatures. On average, Fairbanks experiences 25 days at or colder than 30 below during each cold season.

Temperatures for the next week are expected to be highly variable, with lows around 25 below to highs in the single digits above zero.

It was weird..yesterday it was 0 and when I woke up today it was suddenly -21! Me and a coworker were also talking about how warm it was last winter (compared to -40, -29 is warm lol). I should probably start wearing my goggles now (so I can cover my face without my glasses icing up), but I feel so ridiculous wearing them lol (maybe pretending to be Cherry trekking through Antarctica would help haha). I guess that's better than worrying about frostbite though :P

Yesterday Becky was like "I have a book for you in my office, it was written by your boyfriend!" haha. I was like "you found The Worst Journey in the World??!" She and Denise were laughing because I kept hugging the book LOL. Now I have three editions of the book, yay! Haha (well, I went one day without mentioning Cherry at least :P)

I dealt with the WORST customer I have ever come across today. She's never pleasant to begin with, but today..ugh. She had 10 books and like usual the 11th one was free, which I put to the side. She had 9 books left over and I asked her if she had a punchcard..she said yes, but just gave me her credit card. After I finished putting her books in bags, she asked about getting a punchcard. I interpreted her as not wanting one (even though she said yes) since she just gave me her card, so I said "do you want one?" She VERY rudely said "well YEAH." I got a card out but she wouldn't stop yelling at me! She was like "I should have NEVER let you check me out, you pulled that last time I was here!" Huh?!? Pulled WHAT?? No one's ever said that to me before, so that hurt. I tried talking her down and explaining how many punches she had left but she STILL wouldn't stop yelling and being rude to me. J.R. was standing there too (someone was buying a refurbished computer and was waiting for me to be done) and I looked at him and we both ran to get Becky. Becky tried talking her down, BUT SHE STILL WASN'T LISTENING TO US. At that point I got someone to cover for me and went outside to cry and recharge for a few minutes. Becky and J.R. couldn't believe how nasty she was to me. Somehow Becky got her to leave with a smile..but UGH, why be so rude?? One time that lady told me she was at the store and asked the cashier to double bag her food..I guess she forgot and that lady's bag broke in the parking lot. She went back in and yelled at her and made her clean it up. She said the cashier looks terrified whenever she sees her. WELL I WONDER WHY. There's no need to be nasty, it just ruins people's days! Ugh. I'm worried she's gonna tell other people what a "horrible cashier" I am and to never shop there. Well I refuse to think I'm a horrible cashier and I always try to be pleasant to customers, and will continue to do so. Some people just are nasty for whatever reason. At least my day was brightened when INGRID walked in!! She's Bonnie's friend from Tennessee, and went camping with us earlier in the year. She such an awesome and fun lady, it was SO good to see her again! We'll have to go to dinner! I hope tomorrow is a better day..

Today is mom's 61st birthday! Lately it's been rainy and gloomy and bleh, but today is pretty much perfect..blue skies, low 70s, breezy..we had to find some geocaches, especially since mom was 5 away from 1000! The mosquitoes were intense, but it was so nice just to be outside on such a nice day! Mom indeed found her 1000th cache, woohoo! (I only got 4 since I had already found one of them, but that's alright lol.) Just as we were about to leave, the couple that hid the cache showed up! Oddly enough, it was his wife's birthday too, and they were going to get a drink at the nearby brewery. They thought it was awesome that one of their caches was mom's 1000th one hehe. We celebrated by getting pizza at Pizza Hut, yumm. I'm glad she had a great birthday, and I hope this awesome weather continues! (I've always been amused that mom's birthday is exactly a week after mine lol)

Today was the annual Ides of March sale at the bookstore, where pretty much everything is 50% off and customers could shop at the back of the store..they asked me if I could help work it, so I did. Sometimes I get overstimulated and just shut down at big sales unless I know for sure what I'm doing, so I pretty much just worked the register. There were definitely lots of people, but somehow I just feel calmer in front of the register, like it's a "stress barrier" or something lol. It was amusing, as soon as Denise unlocked the doors people just poured in haha. We made over $1600, which is pretty awesome (there have been sales where we made over $2000, but anything over $1000 is great). One lady bought an entire shelf of kid's books..her total was over $200, and that's with the discount! (Most kid's books are $.50!) It was fun! The register was over by like $.35, which is pretty awesome considering all the transactions. Denise called Becky after we closed and was like "Heather did FANTASTIC on the register." :D Now I'm tired lol

Today mom and I saw Minions..it was kinda dumb and the babbling of the Minions got annoying, but it was still amusing. I bet the kids watching it wouldn't have gotten a lot of the references, like the fake moon landing scene, the Nixon poster that said "Finally, a name you can trust," etc. It amuses me to see adult humor in kids' movies that kids would never understand haha

We've gotten a crazy amount of donations at work lately! I feel bad for Becky, who sorts the books..she can't keep up with them! After the movie (like 7:15) when we drove by the bookstore (it's on the way home lol) I saw that Becky was still there. Poor thing..she must be so stressed!

Today mom and I went to Sedona! (80 some miles from Payson) Today was definitely the warmest and prettiest day so far. The red rocks were super gorgeous in the sun. I didn't remember much, but it had been a long time since I had been there. We ate lunch, did some shopping (my suitcase is gonna be stuffed D:), and hiked up this rock where a vortex was. They're like..a "hot spot" of energy in the earth. They're supposed to give you spiritual and emotional balance or something (Becky said she went to one and she just started laughing and crying and couldn't stop). It didn't feel any different to me though. :P The views up there were amazing though. After spending a few hours there we drove back to Payson..such a gorgeous day to drive up there! We also found seven caches I think (two we didn't find..boo!)

Yesterday mom and I went through some of the stuff in the black hole garage that was easy to get to. It's packed with stuff..it would be easier for dad to do stuff in there than us. Too bad, I really wanted to go through my books. We did find some great pics though..oddly enough, some of the first ones I looked at were when I went to the Petrified Forest/Painted Desert, the Grand Canyon, etc when I was a kid!! So weird lol. There were also pics of Paris, camping, birthday parties, etc. It's really funny to laugh at our fashion sense back then LOL. I love looking at old pics..

1. When did you last have sunflower seeds? Years ago..before I moved to Alaska I think
2. What do you think of the idea of sipping coconut milk through a straw, right from a fresh coconut? Ew..coconut tastes gross to me
3. When did you most recently consume some kind of seed? This week, since I had strawberries..
4. What’s the seediest-looking nearby neighborhood like? Creepy..lots of drunk people
5. When did you last plant some metaphorical seeds, and has there been germination? *shrugs*

Today was the Literacy Council's annual Christmas party..it was fun as always haha. Since Becky's mom died a couple months ago and she LOVED going to our Christmas parties (like even a couple days before her death she was asking when the party was) Becky picked out a number to retire in honor of her mom..so 18 will always be her number. Aww. I got number 2! I first got a body pillow and someone stole that..then I stole a blanket and a candle..since that was stolen already, it became MINEE haha. I think I'm addicted to blankets :P

Day 10 → a photo of you taken over ten years ago )

Today at work I finally got to do something I'd been wanting to do for a long time: rough sorting. Becky usually does it but she was sick today and it seems she has less time to do it lately so I decided to try it (plus the boxes are stacked almost to the ceiling haha. Krystin knows how so she showed me how to do it). When you rough sort, you sort out the trashy/water damaged books and the recycle books (we send those around town) and possible store books (Becky or Krystin goes through them and makes the final decision of where to put them). As with practically everything else at the bookstore, it was super fun! It's kinda like Christmas opening the boxes haha..you'll never know what you'll find! My hands felt super dirty though..ew. Maybe I should wear gloves next time. Hopefully I can do it again!

Day 18: Backlighting )

Would you rather have a 16 year old daughter who stays in her room crying all day or who stays out every night and you don't know where or with whom? The second one

Today's trivia: The tusks of the babirusa, or pig-deer of Indonesia, grow straight through the roof of its mouth and can continue to grow and curve back into its brain if they don't grind their tusks
