Since we ended up having no plans yesterday, we did random stuff around town, like booking a kayak trip at Valdez Glacier Lake (today), a bike ride (tomorrow) and a cruise to Columbia Glacier on Thursday with another company (the other company called and said they're definitely shut down this week). We also visited Valdez Glacier Lake, and watched sea lions catch fish at Allison Point

I kept begging to go on a helicopter tour I read about, which landed on Shoup Glacier (I've been wanting to land on a glacier for years!) and flew over Columbia Glacier. It was expensive, but I was like "I just lived through a pandemic, I deserve this" haha. Plus, the weather was really nice! We went down to the airport where the tours are, and the guy said he could get us in today, and since we were Alaska residents, he'd give us a discount, and Jo would be free! (Ryan has to work from "home" a few days this week, so he couldn't go.) Jo wasn't going to go, but none of us could say no to that deal! Jo had never been in a helicopter or on a glacier..lots of new experiences on this trip for him haha. Oh my, it was SUPER EPIC!! It was beautiful flying out of Valdez and over Prince William Sound and into the green mountains. We saw the little you could see of Shoup Glacier when you're on the ground, flew over a mountain ridge, and squeed SO hard when I saw the REST of the glacier..I didn't realize how big the rest of it is! It was SO awesome and beautiful. Jo was amazed too, and I said "just wait till you see Columbia!!" We found a spot to land near a super blue pool..yay I've landed on a glacier now!! The water from the pool tasted so good. We walked around the glacier for awhile (Jo was nervous because a couple years ago he slipped on ice and broke his leg. Walking on glaciers is definitely not easy!) and saw some moulins (a drainage hole) and just enjoyed the nice weather! I definitely grabbed a rock right off the glacier to take home! After that we took off again and flew over a couple "baby" glaciers..the pilot said he was trying to keep Columbia hidden for as long as possible haha. Then we crested a ridge and there it was! Jo was like "WHOAAA" haha. It may be retreating, but it's still huge! It's one of the fastest moving glaciers in the world, and you can definitely tell..lots of crevasses and stuff. Flying right down the face of it was AWESOME..there's nothing like the feeling of being in front of a big tidewater glacier. :D We looked for wildlife on the way back, and saw a couple goats and some bald eagles. That was such an awesome flight, absolutely worth every penny! We were all disappointed in seeing "just" the mountains when we landed LOL..I love how much you see from the air! After we got back to the B&B we played Betrayal at House on the Hill and went to bed

Today the weather has been cloudy and drizzly (good thing we did the helicopter tour yesterday!). Mom and I wanted to find some geocaches, but they were either in somewhere with construction or in the (probably) bear-infested woods..darn. We did go kayaking at Valdez Glacier Lake though. In the past couple years, Valdez Glacier has become very active..some people actually died in 2019 when they got too close to the face and it calved on them. Last year, a mile of ice broke off, making the lake much bigger. We decided to rent kayaks and take a guide, so we could stay safe. We had fun paddling amongst the icebergs, some of which were HUGE. When I kayaked there in 2014 you could see a lot of the glacier, but this time the icebergs were so tall that they blocked the view, unless you were in just the right spot. The guide said the lake changes all the time, which must be interesting. I took some pictures, but not too many because I didn't want to drift on to a piece of ice and get stuck haha. After that we had dinner, ice cream, and are now relaxing. I always love seeing the feral bunnies around Valdez, they're so cute haha

Today I went kayaking on the Chena River with mom, Jo, Ryan and their friend Daniel (along with everyone else in Fairbanks :P). It was rather warm, but still a nice day to be on the water. It's always interesting seeing the houses and stuff along the river you don't see from the road, and I love seeing and hearing the birds. It took about 2 1/2-3 hours from where we started, and the take-out spot is pretty close to the house, which is cool. Someone had their pugs there, and I tried telling mom that breeders made their face squished on purpose, but said "they-they do that on pur-pur-purpose." Not again!! D: I was really tired, but still..ugh. At least everyone was distracted :P

The lake at my parents' house melted last week, so yesterday we went kayaking on it for the first time! (We own part of it, but anyone who lives on the lake can use the whole thing.) I think that was the first time successfully kayaking on my own! How freeing haha. It was cool seeing all the birds around the lake, especially the snow geese! Here are a couple pics:

Yay! We also took Sid for a walk and had a fire in the firepit at the end of the day, so it was a full day of fun haha

Recently Becky told me Nina (my job coach for many years) had been having kidney problems and had gotten sepsis at the hospital, and was in hospice care. Today I found out she died last Wednesday. :( She was amazing, I'll never forget all the help and support she gave me. She will definitely be missed!

Today mom and I went kayaking on Piledriver Slough with Bonnie (we went geocaching there a couple years ago too)! She and mom and a falling-out for a couple years, but they suddenly seem to be fine with each other again lol. I missed hanging out with her, so that was cool. It takes 2-3 hours if you're just lazily floating along, which is enough for me..it gets uncomfortable sitting for so long! It was nice listening to the Swainson's Thrushes and smelling the spruce forest. <3 We saw a moose too! It was SO HOT though (89)..the breeze felt like it was coming out of an oven! I bet that fire near Murphy Dome has grown a LOT today. Still nice to get out in nature though! It's nice getting better at paddling too :P

Today and yesterday were Customer Appreciation days at work, where most everything in the store was 50% off and there were garage sale type things too..we made over $2000 yesterday!! Awesome. It's fun, but VERY tiring..worth it though!

Day 179. A song that makes you think of the color red: "Crimson Thunder" by HammerFall
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Today was an absolutely GORGEOUS day..we knew it was a good sign when it got sunny when we went to bed yesterday. We called the flightseeing people early since we knew it would fill up quickly, and got a spot soon after that. I was so excited to see glaciers I'd never seen before! We flew over Taku, Hole-in-the-Wall, Norris and East and West Twin Glaciers (and there was one in the distance I didn't know the name of). It was SOOO incredibly awesome..glaciers are one of the coolest things ever!! I kept saying "wow wow WOW" in my head haha. I couldn't believe how gorgeous it was. The pilot said the Taku Glacier was recently advancing, but it stopped for the moment..you could see the moraines it had been pushing forward..squee! It's also the deepest and thickest alpine temperate glacier known in the world (4,845 feet thick)!! I was ridiculously sad when we left the glaciers behind LOL. Such incredible scenery. After that we drove to Christine's house..she had a coupon for a free kayak rental, so we got one (she has her own) and went kayaking at Mendenhall Lake! I was hot on shore and didn't bring my jacket, figuring I'd be fine, even though I KNOW it's colder by glaciers lol..needless to say, my hands were freezing. :P Oh welll, it was still awesome. There were some icebergs, and some arctic terns nesting on the shore. I know we went at least a mile in, since we went past Nugget Falls, which is a mile from the visitor center. The people on the shore looked tiny compared to the falls haha. It would have been cool to get closer, but we had to turn in the kayak at 6, so we turned back so we didn't go over that time. After that we went back to the B&B..such a fun day!!

Tomorrow we're leaving and flying to Anchorage, where we'll stay till Sunday. I hope I see more glaciers LOL (I guess I never get tired of them :P)

lots of glacier pics under here :P )

Today we went kayaking at Three Sisters Springs, which is just off the road..they're so clear and beautiful! You'd never know all of that hidden beauty was there from the road! Before we left we had to watch a short video on not disturbing the manatees..I feel like that should be obvious. :/ We went early (8:30, bleh LOL) so we'd have a better chance of seeing the manatees, and we saw lots of them! They're so cute and docile hehe. There are places roped off where you can't go, called "manatee sanctuaries"..manatees can't survive in water lower than 68 degrees, so they come to the springs, which are always 72 degrees. Mom and I pulled up to the edge of the sanctuary to see the manatees better, and all of a sudden a lady on the boardwalk (which you'll read about in a little bit) was like "YOU IN THE KAYAKS, GET AWAY FROM THE SANCTUARY, YOU CAN'T BE IN THERE!!!!" OMG wow, calm down, we were on the EDGE of the sanctuary, sitting there and doing nothing harmful..jeez. You can swim there as well, and she wasn't yelling at THEM, even though they were at the edge too! We saw more manatees as we kayaked down the channel, and they even swam under our kayak! Awww (they're not aggressive at all, so it wasn't scary lol). There were lots of tour groups there, and as we went by a bunch of swimmers and their guide, he was like "has everyone had a chance to touch a manatee? Move over if you have!" OMG WHAT. Did you not just watch that video that says NOT to touch them??! Ugh, leave the wildlife alone! I'm sure they're used to humans (and will come up to you if you're still), but you still can't harass them! Ugh. I also loved identifying the various trees along the canal (yep, I'm a nerd LOL). I saw probably the biggest magnolia (it smelled amazinggg too) and golden rain tree I've ever seen! Funn :P

After we kayaked for a couple hours, we had lunch at McDonald's (they've gotten really high tech..you can order from a sign without even talking to anyone! I couldn't believe I got three things for $5.00!!! In Alaska it would be like $10), and then took the trolley to the boardwalk, which goes around the different springs. We got to the sanctuary part, where we saw the lady that yelled at us, and yelled at a lot of other people while we were up there too..wow, that must be a fun job. :/ The Manatee Police are watching you. :P The trail continued down the roped off part of the canal we couldn't go to in the kayak..there were LOTS of manatees there, awww! I love the pretty water in the springs too. That was a cool experience :)

After that we stopped at grandpa's house for a few minutes to check on Reese, and then went shopping downtown..my bank account hurts now LOL ( I wanted to go to the bookstore I went to last time, but it closed a couple months after I left :(). It was fun, but I'm glad to be relaxing now :P

November 23 - Did you shop for Black Friday? I did go shopping, but not because it was Black Friday lol

Today mom and I went kayaking and geocaching on Piledriver Slough (outside of Fairbanks) with other local geocachers. I knew most of them, but there were a couple new faces as well. It's funny the reactions I get when I tell them my geocaching name (GlacierKitty)..they're like "a-ha, GlacierKitty!!" Guess I chose a good name. :P The couple that organized the event put a bunch of caches along the slough and the road where you leave, which was nice..I get uncomfortable sitting in the kayak too long lol. Mom and I at least found 12 caches..awesome! I now have over 800 finds, yay! (The event was my 800th..good one for a milestone!) It was a fun group to kayak with. We all got super muddy and got our legs scratched up (evil thorny plants!!), but that's part of the adventure and totally worth it lol. We saw a moose, a beaver or a muskrat, and heard lots of calls from Swainson's Thrushes..I LOVE their songs, they're so calming and peaceful! I'm glad it wasn't as warm as yesterday, but it still got in the 80s (tomorrow it's supposed to be 53..wow, what a difference!)

here are some pics )

Yesterday mom and I went kayaking down the Chena River with Bonnie and Jeanie (mom used to work with her). It was a nice day, though HOT, and everyone else in Fairbanks seemed to have the same idea as us haha. We floated from the Wendell St. Bridge to Pike's Landing, where we had dinner..at 10 PM, but who cares, it doesn't get dark lol (I'm sure they get river traffic late like that all the time..it felt more like 6 or 7 than 10 PM though!). I also found a geocache on an island, which obviously you need a boat to get to or wait for the river to freeze (I guess you could swim too, but that water's too cold for me :P). It was appropriately named "Pirate Denny's Last Stand"..I kinda felt like a pirate searching for treasure on an island haha. It was a lovely night..I love Fairbanks' summer days!!

List three of the most painful things you have ever experienced )
glacier_kitty: (mountains - lake)
Yesterday we geocached around Valdez and looked in a couple shops. Caching in Valdez in the woods is kinda scary since there are lots of bears around, and the forest is pretty dense. After dinner I was tired and went back to the B&B, and mom and Bonnie went caching some more. They were gone for a long time and when they got back they said they saw three bears in the place they were a few minutes ago!! Yikes! The bears went into a river..mom and Bonnie got great pics! We all slept well :P

Today we found more caches..a couple were by the dock and we walked over there to check out the boats that were there. One of them (Kodiak) was on Deadliest Catch!! That was pretty cool haha. We also went kayaking on Valdez Glacier lake! The weather was pretty terrible, but how could we resist?? That IS a big reason we came haha. It was cool finally seeing the face of the glacier up close and exploring the caves and tunnels and stuff. It was sooo cold though haha. We also paddled around the icebergs and found a pretty sweet blue cave. Even though the weather was crappy, the clouds mingling with the mountains looked really pretty. After kayaking was a much needed dinner, a few more caches (we're so addicted :P), and now we're relaxing! Tomorrow we head home..I'm glad Bonnie came with us, she's so funny and a great friend! I'll post all my pics when I get back home :)

The rafting/geocaching on the Chena River was kinda fun. It would have been more fun if it hadn't been cold, rainy and windy most of the time. It started off warm and sunny (70 degrees!) but by the end it dropped down to 44! I was FREEZING, even with my fleece jacket and rain coat. Oh well, it was still cool caching with other people and seeing what was along the river. We saw a golden eagle and two moose! Aww. I think we found 11 or 12 caches? I still need to log them haha. I was SO glad when we got back to the cabin..someone lit a fire and it felt AMAZING. It also started raining and didn't stop..I'm glad we got back when we did haha. We had a nice dinner, then went home. Being in a warm bed felt amazing :P

Tomorrow my parents and I are going on a canoe/kayak/rafting trip down the upper Chena River with a group of other geocachers. We're gonna just float downriver and find caches along the way (someone hid a whole bunch for this event). After rafting there's gonna be a campfire potluck at a cabin..mmmm. Sounds like fun!! Some people are camping overnight, but I doubt dad would want to do that :P

26. see everything blurry or see everything in black and white? )
glacier_kitty: (Default)
This morning we got up and saw it was reallly foggy. It started to burn off when we got to the kayak place. We got all our gear on which took awhile..I had SO many layers on. I had my regular shirt, a fleece jacket, a heavier jacket on that, a rain jacket, a splash skirt thing (to put over the hole in the kayak to keep you dry), a lifejacket, my kinda heavy warm pants, rain pants, two layers of socks and rubber boots. It was SO hard to move haha..I felt like the Michelin Man. :P It definitely kept me warm though. They guides taught us the right way to paddle and stuff, loaded up the boat and we were finally on our way. As we were leaving port we saw two boats featured on Deadliest Catch!!! I was like "OMGSQUEEE!!" haha. One of them was the Kodiak, captained by "Wild" Bill. So awesome haha. We saw sea otters and seals on the way. It didn't take too long to get to the head of Shoup Bay, where the boat dropped us off. We leisurely made our way down to the glacier. On the way we saw a black bear! The guide said that was the first time she'd seen one in Shoup Bay..she was ECSTATIC haha. It was really close to us..I'm sure he saw us but he didn't seem to care at all. I'm glad he didn't feel threatened by us..that's how wildlife viewing should be. At one point he crossed the water in front of us! Woww haha. Our guide just could not get over seeing it haha. We got closer to the glacier, beached our kayaks and had lunch. The glacier looked sooo beautiful in that setting..the beach, the sun shining on it..nothing like it! After lunch we paddled even closer to the glacier..we were so close (but still safe..I hope anyway haha)! Shoup is retreating and a lot of it is on land so it doesn't calve a lot (though there was ice in the water so it must calve sometimes). We didn't get to see it calve but we did hear it groan..coool. It was interesting to see the vegetation on the mountains get less and less it got closer to the glacier. After that we headed back and passed some kittiwake rookeries..they're so loud and weird sounding. :P We got to the original beach, the boat picked us up and we headed back to Valdez. My arms are sooo sore now..ow. Unique experience though! Tomorrow we head to Cordova
