I've had a cold for a week now and it hasn't changed much (though today it seems somewhat better) and it seems like I've lost some of my hearing and when I got out of bed I was really dizzy. It was time to go to the doctor..he looked in my ears and in one he saw green stuff, which concerned him. He said I probably have an upper respiratory/ear infection (it started out as a cold and somehow it turned into the infection). Joy! He prescribed antibiotics and eardrops. He said I should come back in two weeks to see if my ear looks better. I hope it goes away soon, I'm tired of having a cold haha

FAIRBANKS — Fairbanks is officially green.

The National Weather Service said greenup officially occurred on Thursday afternoon on the West Ridge at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Although somewhat subjective, greenup “is the rapid transformation of the landscape from brown to spring green as the leaves of deciduous trees burst forth,” according to greenup guru Ted Fathauer, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Fairbanks.

Greenup occurs earliest on the lower slopes of south-facing hillsides and spreads more slowly upslope. In Fairbanks, the phenomenon is so abrupt that it happens in the course of 24 hours, Fathauer said.

The official greenup date of May 10 is about average, according to records dating back to 1974. The average date of greenup on West Ridge is May 8.

The earliest greenup during that time period was April 29 in 1993, and the latest was May 25 in 1992.

Temperature is the most important factor in the greenup process.

The warmer it is in late April and early May, the earlier greenup will be. While temperatures in April were more than 4 degrees warmer than normal, temperatures so far in May have been 5 degrees colder than average.

Meteorologist Cory Bogel said there are indications that a warmer air mass will move into the area by the middle of next week but that it’s too early to tell how warm it will be.

So far, there has only been one day this spring when the temperature hit 60 degrees — 61 on April 16.

The average date of the first 70-degree temperature is May 20.

Wow..that's very specific of them haha. It's definitely very rapid here. Greenup is an amazing feeling, but the bad thing is I'm allergic to the birch pollen and it's been super windy so my allergies have been going crazy. Sniffing, sneezing, itchy throat..ugh. Good thing I have Benadryl
