1. What is your favorite shape for ice in a beverage? Uh..cubed?? I don't really pay much attention when drinking lol
2. When did you last apply ice (or something functioning similarly) to your body? Not sure..it's been awhile
3. What was the occasion for your most recently toting something with ice in a cooler? Probably a road trip or picnic
4. What is the iciest movie you’ve seen? 2012: Ice Age, The Day After Tomorrow, Happy Feet, The Grey, etc
5. What are some good songs with “ice” in the title or lyrics? "Immigrant Song" ("we come from the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs flow!"), "Under the Ice"-Blind Guardian, "The Haunting (Somewhere In Time)"-Kamelot, "The Tip of the Iceberg"-Owl City, etc

Yesterday was work's annual Biz Bee fundraiser..it always amazes me how they go from words like "charitable" to "fatshedera" (there were a lot of plant words this year!). I thought "aegilops" was especially evil, because unless you're familiar with Greek, you'd never get it right. We did get first place though, yay! (Denise is super smart haha.) The winning words were "hudibrastic" and "Tagalog" (I didn't know it was pronounced "tuh-gaa-luhg"!). I went to the bar and asked for a fruity drink, and the bartender put rum and a couple other things I can't remember, and it was SO good I went back for seconds! (The glass was small lol). I felt warm and pleasantly happy LOL (curtains and alcohol and spelling crazy words, what fun! :P). The hotel where the Bee is at is next to where I go to the doctor and my pharmacy, and always admire the fancy curtains I could see in the windows, so as soon as I was able to I went to hunt them down, and OMG they looked more grand and epic than I imagined..I hadn't realized how tall they were! I was definitely swooning haha. I took a couple pics that weren't super great, so I figured I'd go back when it was dark. After the Bee was over mom and I went back, but there were a lot more people in the room then, and I felt super self-conscious..I definitely got some weird stares lol, but I got pics anyway. Vicki couldn't stay the whole night, so I sent her one of the pics of me and the curtain, and she said "yay!!! I have lots of Heather curtain pics now. ❤️" OMG she's too awesome for words lol. A fun night! (I'm pretty sure I'm still on a "curtain high" from yesterday LOL)

some pics from the night! )

18. What Role Did School Clubs and Teams Play in Your Life? In elementary school I took choir for a little bit (even though I'm terrible at singing haha) and in high school I took fencing for a couple years (super fun, even went to a couple competitions and got third place in both!) and Latin Club, which was also fun, and went to some competitions with that too

19. Which Photograph Stays In Your Memory?

Evans, Scott, Oates, Birdie and Wilson at the South Pole, one of the most powerful pictures I've seen. They're exhausted and devastated that Amundsen got there first

Since the weather is gonna be nice we might go somewhere this weekend (our last chance before winter?). We were thinking Denali or Valdez. It's in the 70s today :D

If we don't go I think I'm going shopping with Jackie..she wants to buy me "girly" cute clothes haha. I do need some nicer clothes though..

Today's trivia: The surface gravity on the sun is 28 times that of earth. If you weigh 120 pounds on earth, on the sun you would weigh 3,360 pounds

Drove home today..Jackie was in Anchorage with her daughter (they're gonna take the train to Seward and go on a glacier cruise) so we met up with them and hung out for a little bit. It rained from Seward to Anchorage..apparently the coast is always rainy (and snowy in the winter) like that..ugh (well..it is what makes the glaciers haha. I wonder why those over there are even retreating since it doesn't exactly get that warm and it snows so much). It's warm in Fairbanks though. We got some lunch at Wasilla (Sarah Palin's hometown! Haha). At one point you could see Ruth, Buckskin and Eldridge glaciers from the road (though the trees were mostly in the way). I looked hard and at the last second I spotted Eldridge before you couldn't see it anymore haha. I'm actually gonna work Wednesday, Thursday and Friday so I'll hopefully get my pics up tomorrow!

Trail shoe: A long, slender snowshoe that's everything a bear paw isn't. Trail shoes are built for long hikes, checking the trapline and anything else requiring sustained travel

Today I turned 20..I am no longer a teenager. Wowww haha. At work someone was like "you're in your 20s now!" and I was like "OMG that sounds so WEIRD" haha. Nina took me out to lunch..we got some sandwiches and sat on the grass by the river. The weather was sooooo gorgeous and warm!! We were like "that was so fun we need to do that again!!" haha. When I got back to work Becky gave me a card signed by my coworkers (one of them said they hope I get a glacier haha!) and a cake made by one of them! Aww hehe. And I specially said NO SINGING haha. After work I went with Jackie and mom to Pike's Landing restaurant and baked in the sun. :P The waiter brought me a dessert too! And I definitely told them no singing. :P Jackie said she's gonna treat mom and I to manicures and pedicures too (mom's birthday is the 15th). I've never had either of them. Mom also got me a cake! I didn't eat any yet cause I already had enough haha. Dana got me an amazon.com gift card (YAY SHOPPING SPREEEEE) and she's shipping other stuff. I also got some money from my grandparents. Woo!

Brenda is flying in soooon!

Squaw candy: A term for dried strips of salmon that was heard more often in the past than in the politically correct present

Do you still use a landline at home, or do you rely completely on your cell phone? I still use a landline..it's my alarm on workdays haha (though today when I went to answer it I poked myself in the eye! Fail :P). Jackie's family was over recently and she told me about her adventures on the way to work. She drove through the Alaska Range and went on a glacier cruise and stuff..she loved it haha

It's the first day of the month. If you could have one wish come true this month, what would it be? Well..to turn 20 for one. But in the middle of the month I'M going on a 26 glacier cruise!! When I saw that it would to take us to College Fjord I about DIED haha. I'll get to see Harvard Glacier!!! And Brenda is coming again next week! It'll be warmer this time haha

How many languages do you speak? One fluently..but I know words in Latin, Spanish, Italian, etc

Sled dog racing: Alaska's official state sport is commonly divided into two categories: sprint, or speed, racing and distance racing. Sprint races are run over a fixed course in daily heats. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has made distance racing the more widely known form

Movies watched this week: Mars Attacks

Today the tour bus companies were giving free tours to Fairbanksans to practice for the summer. Mom and I went and Jackie and Brenda and her kids came too. It was neat..it rather made me feel like I was on vacation though haha. Then mom and I went to watch like 3 videos at the visitor center haha (the Yukon-Charley River preserve, the Gates of the Arctic, Alaskan wildlife). We had lunch, walked by the (OMG MOSTLY UNFROZEN) river and got some fudge at The Fudge Pot. Yay!

i have pics! )

Midnight sun: If it's 2 AM and bright as noon, it's summer in Alaska. The farther north you go, the longer the day gets. Barrow, the northernmost community, has nearly two months of solid daylight (and darkness in the winter..)

Aw man..

Mom's going to Anchorage next week for work..I can't go cause I have to work. Aw mannn haha. And she's flying during the day so she may see Mt. McKinley and stuff (yeah I know I've flown up there twice but still :P). When mom's gone Jackie's gonna eat dinner with me and take me/pick me up from work

Jamie came to work today! He was working on something and we talked for a bit. Only in Alaska do cartoonists come to my work and hang out with me haha (he came last year for the work anniversary big sale too). Here's some of his work: http://www.newsminer.com/photos/galleries/freeze-frame/ and http://www.newsminer.com/photos/galleries/nuggets/

and a survey )

Galloping glacier: Most glaciers move at speeds that make snails look like sports cars. But glaciers sometimes gallop, or surge. The fastest was clocked at 1,000 feet a day (Uhh apparently not..the record for the fastest glacial surge goes to the Kutiah Glacier in Pakistan. In 1953, it raced more than 7 1/2 miles in three months, averaging about 367 feet per day). Oooh and some of Jamie's work is in this book! I told him and he was like "that was awhile ago" haha

I didn't have a window seat on either of the flights yesterday (we didn't go to Anchorage this time). It was mostly dark anyway..but still I was wanting to see glaciers from the airplane (originally we were supposed to fly in the day but mom had to change it cause of her class). We got a taxi and when we were driving in the valley we saw the Northern Lights! We didn't go back out to look after we got home since we had just been traveling but they're supposed to be out tonight too! AND someone got the snow off the driveway for us!!

It's so bright and sunny here now!! Wow haha. It's so weird being on this computer again. :P We said hi to Jackie, got food, walked on the frozen river..(I have pics but the camera is in the car and mom went back to Jackie's :P)

pic of the day )

Fish trap: Originally, any of a number of methods used by Natives to catch fish. The best-known of these was a basket-like device, wide at the downstream end, that allowed fish to swim in but not out. Later, large, floating structures used by canneries that were so efficient that they were banned to prevent extinction of the fish stocks

Yesterday we saw The Curious Case of Benjamin Button..it was good! Mom was bawling haha. The makeup artists did REALLY well too. Then we showed Jackie (mom's coworker) Bentley "Mall" and she was like "nice :P" haha. We also ate at a restaurant called Turtle Club..they have really good steaks!

Wow it got around 0 today! It doesn't feel like your face and hands will freeze off in like 5 seconds haha (though if you're out long enough..). It even snowed! It was clear for 2 weeks practically. It'll even get in the 20s and possibly 30s..woww

pic of the day )

Arctic haze: The north's version of smog is mostly industrial pollution imported from Russia by prevailing winds. Scientists worry that it will do bad things to the northern environment, particularly making it warmer by trapping heat
glacier_kitty: (Default)
One of mom's coworkers moved here around two weeks ago (nice timing :P) and we took her to Ivory Jacks one day (mmmm..) and went to her apartment and mom helped her put her furniture together. She came over for dinner yesterday and today we're gonna go to the movies and go out to eat. Even though it's been -40 with ice fog she's still optimistic and loves it here. She wants to travel the state too haha

pic of the day )

Arctic Entry: A porch of sorts built to reduce heat loss. The entry has a door at each end that can be closed before the other door is opened. Also handy as a place to park your bunny boots and parka, or those fish you caught through the ice
