I'm not sure where this bout of creativity came from, but all of a sudden I was composing alternate lyrics to Jingle Bells, Antarctica style haha. I had to write it down before it left me..they may not be the best lyrics in the world, but I think it's pretty awesome :P

Dashing through the snow
With a one-ton sledge in tow
O'er the sastrugi we go
Grunting all the way
Spoon on stove rings
Making sledgers hungry
What fun it is to stare and wonder
At the Southern Lights tonight

Cracking ice, cracking ice
Cracking from the Barrier
Oh what fun it is to ride
On a dog-driven sledge

A day or two ago
I thought I'd take the ponies over the ice
And soon, Cherry
Was standing next to me
The pony was falling in the sea
Misfortune seemed to plague him
He got onto stable ice
And then we got rescued
the rest )

That was really fun and I think it turned out great lol. :D The "ponies over the ice" references to when Cherry, Birdie and Crean got stuck out on an ice flow with the ponies (with killer whales circling around them!), and of course the Cape Crozier one is when they went to get the penguin eggs. Sastrugi are wavy ridges cause by the crazy Antarctic winds, and hard to walk across. Yay, random creative streak :P

Denise said we made over $600 yesterday too!! Wow. I'm glad today was slower though, we needed a break lol

Welcome new friends!! I hope I'm not too boring :P

On this day, 105 years ago, the bodies of Scott, Wilson, and Birdie were found by Cherry and other members of the expedition. What really touches me about it is that Scott's hand was resting on Wilson's bag..they lived as friends and died as friends, and they didn't regret it. He was right in his Message to the Public when he said "Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman." The tale definitely tells about all those things, even though he didn't live. I will always be amazed at how well everyone got along with each other. When they got back to the hut they erected a cross nearby with the names of the lost party (along with Oates and Evans, who died earlier on the trip back) and "to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield," from the poem Ulysses by Lord Tennyson, which I think was Cherry's idea. RIP to some of the greatest guys who ever lived, you'll never be forgotten <3 (It's weird to think their bodies are still buried somewhere on the Ross Ice Shelf O_o)

Ooooh, a polynya!! I almost never see that word outside of polar exploration books (they mentioned one in Frozen Planet too), so it was exciting to see it used in the news lol. It's apparently larger than Maryland..wow

At work we found the blockage and fixed it, so now a team has been coming in to clean and/or replace the carpet and part of the walls that got damaged. I'm glad we have their help, because we had to move a TON of stuff. We're going to need to bookcases too. Hopefully they'll be done cleaning by next week..then we'll have the huge task of putting everything back where it was. D: I can't wait till everything's back to as normal as it can get lol

Today at work we arrived to a whole bunch of books just stacked haphazardly by the back wall:

I've only seen Paulette that angry a couple of times..she was fuming! We HATE when people leave stuff outside when we're not there..more than once we've had books destroyed by the rain that were left outside..and it's just rude! We're not a dumping ground! I thought I'd seen it all, but there were at least 4 or 5 DRESSER DRAWERS with books in them! I texted Denise this picture and said "WTF?? Who does this??" so she wouldn't have a heart attack when she got to work lol. When she got to work she was like "I was shocked when you texted WTF! Heather cursing?? Wow!" I'm not sure if that technically counts as cursing lol, but I was like "I'm full of surprises." :P We loaded most everything in Denise's truck and went to the dump (most of the books weren't in great condition). We had to make two trips because there were so many boxes/drawers/books in lids LOL (I'm glad it wasn't 86, like last week when we went to the dump..too hot!!). We got a smoothie after, so that was nice. :P What an interesting day lol

A huge iceberg broke off from the Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica today..it weighs more than one trillion tons and is 2,239 square miles..wow!! One of my coworkers was like "that is not good, global warming blah blah" and I said "that's what tidewater glaciers DO, even advancing ones!" And indeed, and article (HAHA I just wrote arcticle! LOL) I just read said "this is part of the normal behavior of ice shelves. What makes this unusual is the size." Yeah, don't argue with me about something I'm passionate about LOL

Earlier I dropped my phone in a puddle, and it somehow still works..phew! Maybe the case protected it..

Omg they filmed this at Cape Crozier..where Cherry and co. worked so hard to get to..and there's still lots of penguins there..this makes me super emotional! Wow. It's one thing to read about it, but actually SEEING it..wow. *stunned* Cherry would be pleased there are still many penguins there :) (I really hope I get to go to Antarctica someday..you have no idea how badly I want to go there lol)

The major earthquake that hit Japan on Friday caused a massive ice stream in Antarctica to momentarily speed up.

As the surface seismic waves generated by the quake travelled around the world, they appear to have given the Whillans ice stream in West Antarctica a nudge, causing it to slide by about half a metre.

The movement was picked up by Jake Walter of the University of California, Santa Cruz, and his colleagues, who monitor the glacier remotely from California. They say the event is an "interesting insight", but are not suggesting it will destabilise the ice stream in any way.

The Whillans ice stream drains ice from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet into the Ross Ice Shelf. Since 2007, Walter and colleagues have been using GPS field stations on the ice sheet to monitor its movements. They have shown that the ice stream speeds up twice a day in slip events which last about 30 minutes.

The glacier normally creeps along at an average speed of about 1 metre per day. But during a slip event, it slides almost half a metre in one go. The sudden slips are related to the tides, and are strong enough to generate seismic waves that are recorded by stations at the South Pole and the Antarctic Dry Valleys.

That's amazing..
