Mom put the Christmas tree up a couple days ago, and of course Curti had to check it out!

So Christmasy! I can't believe how big he is now, he's very heavy haha. He was naughty and somehow pushed the giant turkey plate off the table, which shattered on the floor! He's not allowed on the table, but does it anyway to get attention :P

It may start getting dark at 2 or 3 PM now, but the sunrises/sunsets are great!

So pretty!

For the past three or so weeks my pleasant, regular bus driver was replaced with a VERY unpleasant lady, who hated everyone and everything and barely even looked at you when you got on the bus. She kicked off my friend who asked if she could be let on the bus because it was cold..she LOST it and was like "I HAD TO TO THE BATHROOM!!! I DON'T WANT TO BE IN A BAD MOOD BECAUSE OF YOU!! Don't tell me how to do my job! Get off my bus!" Awful. D: I could just feel the bad vibes coming off of her (there have been lots of complaints about her, but apparently won't fire her because they're short on drivers). Finally this week the regular driver came back and when I got on I said "nice to see you!" and he said "thank you!" The atmosphere on the bus was totally changed and everyone was super happy lol. He is definitely appreciated!

Work was pretty busy yesterday, yay! Velma Wallace (author of Two Old Women, Bird Girl, etc) came in and did some Christmas shopping lol

1. In German, fernweh is a longing for distant places, perhaps even places you’ve never been. What place you’ve never been do you have fernweh for? Iceland, for one
2. In Finnish, myötähäpeä is “the kinder, gentler cousins of schadenfreude, something akin to “vicarious embarrassment.” For whom did you last feel myötähäpeä? One of the most annoying customers at the bookstore..she thinks she's being amusing, but she just gets on my nerves! One time Vicki checked her out and when she found the book she wanted she literally got on her knees and was like "HALLELUJAH!!!! PRAISE THE LORD!!!" O_o She actually worked at the bookstore for awhile but didn't last long because she was that annoying D:
3. In Japanese, shouganai means “there’s nothing we can do about it, so we accept it, rather than waste time worrying or being angry.” How good are you at saying shouganai and putting it into practice? I've gotten better, but it can be hard, like the situation with Denise..I keep thinking about all the ways it *should* have gone lol. Sometimes I'll sigh and shrug it off and keep going lol
4. In Scots, tartle is the “panicky hesitation just before you have to introduce someone whose name you can’t quite remember.” When did you last experience tartle and how did you handle it? Not sure..
5. In Georgian, zeg means “the day after tomorrow.” What are you doing zeg? Relaxing online, probably going to the grocery store, etc

Tonight's sunset was so cool!

1. Who was the last child, unrelated to you, you personally had a conversation with? Not sure..
2. Among things most children aren’t permitted to do, what should they be permitted to do? Stay up late..I always wanted to when I was a kid lol
3. Some people say there are (generally) animal people and children people. Which are you? An animal person
4. Which children’s books do you remember enjoying most? Where the Red Fern Grows, The Giving Tree, Harry Potter, My Side of the Mountain, etc
5. When did you last see koi in person? *shrugs*

We were going to go to a museum today, but Dean suddenly spotted bees swarming around a tree in his yard (he has a hive in the yard). We all rushed out to look..the bees were so loud! They all were piling on a branch in the tree. Cindy and Dean explained that when bees swarm like that, the queen has left the hive and with the other bees, is looking for somewhere else to make a hive. She's not a very good flyer though because she's heavy (even though the worker bees starve her for a couple days), so she has to rest, and all the bees pile on top of her so she's safe, and scouts go off to look for a good place for another hive. Dean got a box and suited up, then clipped off the branches with the bees and put them in the box. There were still bees flying around, but flew into the box once they knew the queen was in the box. Dean co-owns the hive with his friend, so he called his friend and his friend said to take the box to his house and he'd do something with it (Dean didn't want those bees anyway, since he thought the queen was getting too old). When Dean got back home he checked the hive, which had a lot of "queen cells" in it, which queens hatch out of in a couple weeks. That's why the old queen left: there wasn't enough room for all those bees, so half of them left to find a less crowded spot. When a queen emerges, she stings the other queens still in the cells (there can be only one!), so Dean split the hive and put some cells and bees in another box, so now he'll have two hives! I learned a lot of cool things about bees today..they're so smart! It was cool to see their intelligence by watching them swarm (they have to plan in advance!). Hopefully Cindy and Dean will have lots of honey this summer haha

This morning when walking to work I saw the clouds looked really cool and figured the sunrise would be pretty..I got distracted at work and would have forgotten to look had Becky not said to look outside. I was not prepared for THIS amount of awesomeness:

12507287_1163658633659290_2594392245733124135_n
It was incredible..SO pink and pretty! My coworkers and I were all gathered around taking pics haha. Everyone on Facebook was talking about it too. :P Probably one of the best sunrises I've ever seen! I love nature <3

Here is another. Too bad pictures don't do it justice lol:

So I got that birth control implant out today..it wasn't working at all and just made me miserable. Too bad, it would have been awesome to not have a period for three years lol. My GYN said there aren't really any other birth control options that would help with pain..she did say Aleve would help keep the bleeding down and help with pain when you take it every day during your period. She also said there's this ablation (heh, like a glacier :D) surgery they could do that would burn away the bad cells or something. She was really concerned about doing it since I'm so young and might want kids later on and the procedure could scar the uterus or something (nope, I'm pretty sure mom and I convinced her I never want kids haha). She said to wait a couple or so months to see if I feel better without all those hormones and trying Aleve. I really hope it helps..I'm sooo tired of being miserable and feeling experimented on lol

Day #10: Your favorite original character (Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, etc.) )

Today's trivia: The fact that some pirates wore eye patches most likely had nothing to do with a missing eye, and everything to do with being able to see—specifically, above decks and below them. Pirates frequently had to move above and below decks, from daylight to near darkness, and the smart ones wore a patch over one eye to keep it dark-adapted outside. When the pirate went below decks, he could switch the patch to the outdoor eye and see in the darkness easily

Today mom and I went caching a little outside of Payson, and it turned into fossil hunting when the description of a cache said this: "As you walk toward this geocache you will be treading on the fossilized remains of these 300 million year old invertebrates. This is considered the most fossiliferous site in the state featuring fossils of the Paleozoic Era (Ancient Life era) found in the weathered limestone, shale, and sandstone. They are most easily found in pieces of limestone which look sort of like frozen gray mud." Wow, I never would have known about the place if not for geocaching!! (Also, "fossiliferous" is an awesome word. :P) It was fun hunting for fossils on the way to the cache (and I love rocks, so it was cool seeing the different kind of rocks too). We found some fossils to take home with us..so cool!! We also came across a controlled burn..we had been seeing the smoke since we got here, and was curious to see where it was (I didn't think it was an uncontrolled fire anyway, since the smoke wasn't acting crazy and there weren't planes or anything). It was weird seeing random spots just burning by the side of the road lol. We found five caches altogether, and then rewarded ourselves with a milkshake lol..yummy! Here are a couple pics:

Mom and I couldn't resist getting a cache after going to the store haha (especially since we looked for it twice and the owner recently replaced it). You probably can't tell it's snowing in the pic, but I thought it looked pretty :) (Appropriately enough, the cache is called "The Perfect Spot" haha)

One thing I like about geocaching is you get to explore new areas. Like yesterday mom and I went to a cache on Chena Hot Springs Road..it was in a lovely quiet evergreen forest and the Pipeline went through there too! I didn't even know the Pipeline was by that road haha. Funn

I woke up and thought the color outside seemed funny..so I looked and saw an awesome sunrise! I had to go to the top of the hill (well..almost to the top haha) to get pics. We're having another chinook so it was pretty warm for that time of day! It's 61 and forecast to be 70!! Woww haha. Awesome for the first day of fall ;)

the rest )
glacier_kitty: (Default)

Bahaha..you may have to be from Alaska to appreciate it, but that was great haha. Alaskans are awesome :D

It is SO yellow outside! When you look at the hills they're just golden. It's so pretty..in Texas the leaves just turned brown :P

25. Trouble Lurking )

Today I went to the botanical gardens at the university with Judy and her friend. They were rather ragged since it's September, but still nice. I bet they look awesome during the height of summer. There were some really beautiful tamarack trees that were pretty big. Judy took pics that she's gonna email to me..I'll post those and the ones from the hike last week tomorrow or Sunday. After that we went to Judy's old office..she was a psychology professor and founded the Northern Studies program. She's written books and writes columns for the newspaper. She graduated from Harvard with a doctorate..wow haha. She is definitely super smart. Her former student is now the director of the program whom we met. Cool haha. Then we went to Alaska Coffee Roast again to eat. I wonder what we'll do next..

Sunday hike

Well yesterday was an adventure. The other day dad found hiking trails on top of the hill behind mom's house and near an airport. Yesterday we decided to hike there again. It's pretty nice (the trails are even named!). I didn't even know all that was there haha. We eventually descended a steep hill to O'Connor Creek..I was so not looking forward to going back up. We followed this overgrown trail in the valley till we found a decent one that headed back up (my arm got mauled by a plant and my shoes got soaked and dirty haha). That last hill was a killer..I can walk on flat ground for miles but when you add a hill..I'm done. But I drug myself up and when we got back to the airport..it rained on us. Haha jeez. My arm felt numb when I dried it off at the house. I really don't know how far we walked..3 or 4 miles? I was SO hungry when we got back haha..we went to Ivory Jack's which was amazing. :P I didn't get a chance up upload all my pics before I went back to my apartment so I'll post them when I'm back at mom's house

Uncle Carl has prostate cancer. :/ They did catch it early though and he's gonna have surgery soon. I hope he'll be ok..

12. Insanity )

Would you rather go to school one day wearing only your tight white underwear or after being sprayed by a skunk? After being sprayed by a skunk..hopefully I could find perfume or something haha

Today's trivia: A male sand grouse soaks himself in water, then flies back to the nest so his chicks can drink from his feathers

I'm back from Denali! On Sunday mom and I drove down..it's such a short drive (1 1/2 hours or so) haha..especially when you're used to driving to Valdez. :P The mountains on that side of the Alaska Range are so different from the ones on the Richardson..they're much drier. After we got there we went shopping for like..two hours haha. We didn't even get to all the shops but we were just like "I'm done now" haha. After that we checked into the hotel, relaxed, walked by the Nenana River, got ice cream and went to bed

Yesterday we had breakfast and then went hiking at Savage River (mile 15, the furthest you can go with your car). It was 2 miles altogether. It was nice..the terrain was pretty and interesting and the sun even came out. I couldn't stop taking pictures haha. I always thought Savage River was glacial but when I got next to it I saw it was clear! The marmots kept chirping at us. :P After that we had lunch and then went on a bus tour, the Tundra Wildness Tour! That was the bus I went on the very first time I went to Denali. I like that it's narrated and they specifically stop for wildlife. We saw SO many bears and caribou! This one bear and her two cubs went down the hill, got RIGHT near our bus and went walking down the road! That was SUPER awesome!! The bears weren't even afraid. We also saw a fox, lynx, moose, birds, Dall sheep, squirrels, etc. The weather was better than other times I've been, but McKinley was cloudy again. BOO. I've done it four times and still haven't seen the mountain from the park. I've heard only 30% of people do, but the bus driver said it was more like 10%-15%. Wow. I WILL SEE IT FROM THE PARK SOME DAY. Haha. Since the weather was better and not obscuring all the mountains, I discovered new glaciers! YAY haha. I even saw fresh snow! Oh my. :P The mountains were so pretty..they're different every time I see them. After the tour we had dinner and I went right to bed :P

Today we had breakfast and just drove home (I got Abby from mom's house first haha..now she's drooling on me :P). Yayy Denali! I traveled a lot this summer haha. Pics tomorrow!

Day 86: A picture of your favorite color )

Would you rather have to walk to the end of your driveway nude every day to get your mail or have your spouse walk to the mailbox in the nude? My spouse haha

I really love that by walking just five minutes to the top of the hill, you see miles of hills, trees, wilderness and the mountains in the distance (though yesterday it was cloudy and we could only see the top of Hayes, Hess and Deborah). It's even better with the fresh Alaska air. It's really amazing you don't even have to go far to find it here. I don't think I could live anywhere else.. (Snowy went too hehe)

Hehe yay. They look easy to get to from the road but they like growing in swampy areas..this wasn't too swampy but still overgrown and ditchy (I don't think that's a word? Haha). They seem to keep their needles longer than the birches and stuff..

glacier_kitty: (Default)
Earlier in the week I heard Creamer's Field was having a fall walk on Saturday (today) and I thought it would be fun so I went with mom and dad. The fall colors are AMAZING here..I don't think I've ever seen it this colorful here before. The birches and aspens are BRIGHT yellow and some have some red. The hills are crazy yellow. The walk was cool..I hadn't walked in the forest there in the fall before. It's such a dramatic change! There was one lone tamarack tree in the forest too! It's so cool to see them yellow! After that we did errands and drove home..I saw a whole bunch of tamaracks in the Goldstream Valley!! They're easy to see now that they've changed color. I didn't even know there were any there haha

pics! )

Earlier I went to look out the window at work cause it was sunny for once and just felt like it and I saw this..it was SO awesome haha. Sundogs are formed when it's really cold (it was -20 something..so fun walking to work :P) and there's ice crystals in the air (I saw those too) so conditions were like perfect. I think these were taken around noon so that's basically as high as the sun gets now
