A book that's on a celebrity book-club list: The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams (Mar 17-Apr 3)

A book you bought secondhand: The Children's Blizzard by Melanie Benjamin (Apr 4-12)

the topics )

I purposely brought a very long book with me while traveling, which is why the list looks sad lol. I feel behind though :P

I did a thing!

Joelle or Gina mentioned something about dyeing hair, and I couldn't get it out of my head, so I got it done today! How fun! Everyone says it looks natural lol

On Saturday Gina thought it would be fun to go to a garage sale, so we got in the car and followed an "Estate Sale" sign to a fancy neighborhood. I had a feeling there'd be a four-poster bed in that house. :P Estate sales are kinda sad because you know someone died, and Joelle got so upset going through the house that she ended up sobbing, awww. :( I was indeed right about a four-poster bed, though it was a kids princess-y bed..mom was amused by my squeeing LOL. It was fun, and we all ended up with a pile of stuff :P

Tomorrow mom and Cindy and I are driving back to Santa Fe (I think Gina's leaving tonight). It's been entertaining, especially with Gina around (she's just crazy haha). We've definitely spoiled grandma by taking her out to eat and shopping and stuff. I love how happy and positive Joelle is, even with her POTS stuff and other health issues. All the animals have loved the extra attention. It'll be sad leaving, though somewhat relieving because all this socializing is exhausting haha. I imagine we'll be back though!

29 – International Astronomy Day: Have you ever looked through a telescope or gone to a planetarium? Do you have a favourite celestial body? Yeah, both are cool! Saturn is pretty cool, for one

30 – International Jazz Day: Jazz, love it or hate it? Not a fan

May 1 – School Bus Drivers' Day: When you were young, did you have to take a school bus to get to school? Yeah, though my parents drove me too

My parents had another garage sale this weekend, and this scene melted my heart:

Abby hasn't had many interactions with kids, so I was interested in how she'd react..of course she loved the attention lol. At one point she was by the house and when she saw these kids getting her attention, she ran up to them and flopped on the ground (of course, the kids loved it too haha). When they stopped petting her, she looked up and was like "why'd you stop! Pet me more!" You'd think she'd get annoyed or something, but nope, every time they stopped she looked at them like that..it was so funny! When the family was leaving, she started following them down the driveway and one of the kids was like "she's more like a dog!" haha! One person was amazed she didn't run away..why would she do that?? She loves her humans too much LOL. I'm so lucky I have such an amazing kitty <3 (we did well selling stuff on Saturday, but yesterday it was SO cold, rainy and windy..not tons of people, but some stuff sold at least. Where did summer go??)

Today's trivia: Humans are the only animals with chins
glacier_kitty: (Default)
The garage sale at my parents' house this weekend went pretty well! We still have a lot of stuff, but sold a lot too (the tools and Alaskan Amber shirts were very popular. Everyone was definitely shocked we had so many of the same things :P). It was fun to work it, but it was a bit too hot (meaning, in the 70s LOL. The sun is seriously intense up here!). Both days the clouds built up into storms, which mostly missed us, but check this out!

These are mammatus clouds..they're basically caused by rising and falling unstable air on the underside of the anvil (the top, when it spreads out) of a cumulonimbus cloud. It can mean an intense storm, but not always. I saw them a lot in Texas, but very rarely up here, so mom and I were very excited when we saw them! Clouds are so cool. :D There was a baby robin (I think) in the yard too, awww!

Mom will have another sale in 2 or 3 weeks I think..we've earned a nice amount of money so far, which will probably go towards furniture and stuff for the new house. After the sale mom and I got Wendy's, and mom thought "breakfast guarantee" on the cup said "breaking quarantine" LOLOL! What we see in the age of corona.. :P

My parents are going to have a garage sale before moving, so we've all been taking stuff from the crawlspace to sort through and price for the sale. I knew we had a lot of stuff, but I still wasn't prepared for how much we found. Dad used to buy multiples of everything, and at one point bought some Alaska Amber shirts..we found at LEAST fifty of them, in different colors too (I'm sure there are more in his room too). Vases, hoses, paintbrushes, Christmas lights, colorful glass pumpkins..you name it, we have multiples of it (I'm sure he spent a lot of money on all those things, a lot of it never used! D:). We're also finding things we didn't even know we had, like a pressure washer. Our sale is going to be VERY interesting haha

I can't believe how bad the pollen has been here..a couple days ago the sky looked hazy, but it was GREEN with pollen! I've never seen anything like that before. Mom and I have been miserable..next year mom wants to escape to Payson for the whole month of May, after their allergy season is over..sounds like a good idea to me :P

The bookstore is officially opening back up on June 1! I might have to get used to working every day again LOL

And check THIS out: an offprint copy of a biography of Cherry by George Seaver!! So rare I had no idea it even existed! I would LOVE to have it, but uhh..$2,800?? I actually emailed the seller asking if I could pay it in stages..they'll probably say no, but it was worth a try :P

This weekend was the Vintage Alaskana Garage Sale, the last one, since the lady who collected the items died earlier this year. :( The guy who works at that awesome bookstore downtown was there, and he is now managing her estate (I asked if he was surprised I was looking at books and he was like "NOPE" haha). He must think mom and I special, since we got to go into the basement of his store, and this time he took us on a tour of her house! WOW, it could be a museum in itself!! There were thousands (not even exaggerating) of postcards outside for sale, but there were THOUSANDS more in binders in her house (he said those were going to the archives, wherever that is lol), hundreds of books, the polar bear skin of the last white man that was allowed to legally shoot them, old food containers, and so much more. I wonder where she found all that stuff! The guy showed us a light above the stairs and said people have turned it off, only to find it back on again. They thought someone might have gotten inside, but a lady decided to stay at her house..she turned off the light, came back a minute later..and the light was back on!! Creepy!!! Pretty sure the lady is watching making sure no one messes her estate up LOL. The guy said they just leave the light on now :P (I wanted to turn it off and come back, just to see what would happen haha). The books are going to the Literacy Council, yay! There are some great ones!

Here are some of the cool things I found!

This plate is from 1894!! I wasn't super thrilled with the design, but when I saw the date, I had to get it. Who else has a glacier plate from the 1800s?? Haha

Day 207: A song by someone you would classify as “smarmy”: I had to look that up.."Love Yourself" by Justin Bieber

Day 208: A song you like that's very girl power: "Roar" by Katy Perry

Today was that awesome Alaskana garage sale a collector puts on every year..I missed it the last two years (last year I was in Glacier Bay and the year before mom was hiking the Chilkoot Trail), so I was very excited to be able to go this year lol. There is SO much stuff there, it would take days (maybe weeks!) to go through it all. Even though it's an Alaskana garage sale, I was hoping there would be books about Antarctica, and I was surprised when I did find some! I got some cool old postcards of glaciers and stuff too. It's fun looking through the stuff, but the lady is a heavy smoker, so my hands feel so gross after going there, and I leave with a headache and reeking of smoke..still worth it though. :P Is it next July yet?? Haha

I'm so happy it's cooler today..it was over 90 degrees in the building at work earlier in the week!! It was miserable. D: It actually felt like the sun was going to catch my clothes on fire. By Sunday it's supposed to get into the 80s again though..ugh

Today was the annual vintage Alaska garage sale! I went with Becky (like last year) and Mike (the Executive Director). I don't know where that lady gets all that stuff, but she has TONS of it. I always find cool things! I'm amazed I only spent $20 some too :P

Day 13 - A song that reminds you of a former friend )
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Today I went to a vintage Alaska garage sale with Becky. This person has it once a year..I think she's been collecting that stuff a LONG time. There is SO much stuff haha. You would have to be there for hours if you wanted to see everything. I went last year too and it was FREEZING but today it was nice and warm. I really wanted to find a pic of Black Rapids Glacier (I didn't find one last year) and after looking through hundreds of pics I FOUND ONE!! And not just one, but TWO!! They're actually the same pic but I definitely took them both haha. It was like winning the lottery :D (I gasped when I found it..of course it was quiet just then :P). SO glad I have them! One is hanging in my office at work. :D Eeeee. I've been wanting one for a long time. I got other pics of glaciers too (for some reason there were a lot of Taku Glacier) and a $20 book on climbing McKinley but didn't want to go overboard cause I only had like $42 and didn't want to write a check cause I don't have much money in the bank. We couldn't stay too long cause Becky had stuff to do at work (probably a good thing..I need money for food too :P). Somehow I stayed on budget haha..it came out to $41 something! Nicee

So Charlene has been staying at the house since Sunday or Monday. Apparently she was kicked out of her house and has no money. Ryan said she's gonna stay till September. Uh..this might be weird/awkward :/

Yesterday I went to a vintage Alaska garage sale. It was AWESOME. I got a whole bunch of old postcards with glaciers..it's amazing to see how much they've changed and what they looked like back them. I wanted to find a pic of Black Rapids Glacier but I didn't. They have it once a year..I'll have to go back

Dad's here! He arrived yesterday. The car was PACKED with stuff haha. He finally brought some of my books..I've been begging him to every time he goes back to Texas :P

We got another Snowy sighting..this time he was on the other side of the highway in another neighborhood. Eek..I hope he doesn't go too far! Poor guy all lost and scared..dad's out looking for him right now. At least we know he's alive. I'm glad our neighbors are so nice and helpful!

I'm baaaack. I got a paid account from [livejournal.com profile] rdyfrde!! Thanks sooo much!! Well Thursday we drove to Kansas and found the hotel (Marriott). When I first saw it I was like "OMG UGLY" but the inside was urbanitas haha. Friday..my birthday! We drove to grandma's old house and saw family..yay! Most of the day we took grandma's stuff out of the house for the garage sale..MAN she had a lot of stuff! We went out to Outback Steakhouse for my birthday. Saturday we did basically the same thing as Friday..so many things she had! People kept saying how pretty my hair was haha. I got sunburned too. At the end of the day Aunt Julie was all like "WHEEE"..I asked if I could write Luca on her shoulder and she said yes haha..I did it to mom and then mom did it to me. Julie was like "we've been Luca-fied!" hahaha. Yesterday we did more tidying up the house and stuff and then we left and here I am...my CDs and book came. Still waiting on my Edguy shirt though
