That's..creepy O_o

Day 04 - A song that calms you down )

Would you rather have your spouse find out about three affairs you had while engaged or about one affair you had while married? Ughh..I guess while engaged..

Today's trivia: The world "shrapnel" is from English artilleryman Henry Shrapnel, who invented a shell with lead balls to cause as many casualties as possible

Yay!

Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano is rumbling again.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory says a series of small earthquakes began occurring around the summit of the volcano Sunday and continued Monday. As a result, scientists have upgraded the volcano's alert status.

Ooh..maybe it'll erupt again! Sweeeeet

Today's trivia: The network logo lurking in the corner of your TV screen is called a "bug"

Redoubt erupted majorly at 6 this morning..and I think it took a chunk out of the top of it cause it didn't look like that before. Wow haha. It's been quietish these past few days..maybe it was tired :P

Hooligan: An oily smelt, sometimes called a candlefish because its oil will burn like a candle if a wick is placed in it. The name is a corruption of its proper name, eulachon

Today is apparently a holiday I'd never heard of till a few days ago..it's Seward's Day. I guess it commemorates when Seward bought Alaska from Russia..nice haha

Eep..grandma's in the hospital having problems with her lymphoma again..the first chemical they used didn't work so her tumor kept growing..they're gonna try other chemicals though. And she's throwing up acid again..poor grandma..

Some guy yesterday told me to jump on the river..cause it was safe. Uh huh..

Whoa..a video of Redoubt erupting!: http://vimeo.com/3892358

Head-bolt heater: With this gadget, Alaskans keep the cold from turning their automobile engines into ice sculptures. Electrical heaters are installed in a car's engine and plugged into an outlet when the car is parked. The heat keeps the water in the engine from freezing

You check for updates every fifteen minutes...including at least twice right before you go out the door to work at five in the morning. (At times haha..if I'm bored or it's erupting :P)
You whine at the MTSAT image that they just put up, because it managed to catch the ash plume...and that's a *REALLY* spiffy toy.
You know WHAT TIME the MTSAT image was put up.
You feel joy and fuzzy feelings at the seismograph readouts- and that lately it looks a lot like a heartbeat!
You make bad jokes and icons: punning off the volcano's name. (REDOUBT IS DOUBTFUL haha..someone on Bzoink is so amused by Redoubt haha..we dubbed it "the volcano that can't make up its mind." :P I didn't make the icon though)
You are irrationally jealous of the volcanogists.
You wish you were at Drift River...in a raft.
You bug your co-workers for the twitter report on their cell phones at work.
There is more irrational amusement that it seems like Redoubt is teasing Denali, because the ashfall satellite images stop just short of the mountain.
You break out your college geology books and read them to your son.
The books don't have a lot of pictures.
The books are less than five years old.
You have more than one textbook dealing with geology, and it has nothing to do with being bought for class. (..if glaciers count haha. I have two :P)
You wish there was ashfall where you are at, for the sole purpose of collecting it. (I'm sooo jealous of other people on LJ's stories of seeing ash and stuff!!)
You know the procedure to scientifically collect it.
Your first priority when collecting the ash would be for AVO, THEN souvenir for yourself.
You're actually writing a "I have it bad for volcanoes" list.
You know what day the RSO seismograph went out- and it gives you glee.
You liked the RSO graph more than the other graphs because it had the best quality.
You laughed at the HUT, because the one off the Drift river almost got carried away.
There's more giggles at the DROT station because they might have dikes, but they seemed to forget about the road......
....and you start to plan out a painting that would include both Redoubt erupting, and the seismographs.

Hanging glacier: A glacier nestled in a rock bowl on the side of a mountain. It just hangs there (HAHA..that last sentence is amusing :P)

Redoubt erupted again this morning..the ash cloud went up to around 65,000 feet! Paulette and I were looking at the volcano information for like 15 minutes or so at work haha (mom had texted me the volcano had erupted and I told her)

I saw this sick/dying bird at the feeder this morning. Poor bird..*sniff*

It got above freezing today! When I went past the river this morning I was like "OMG!" at how much of it had melted! Though that part of it gets warm water dumped in it and kept partially unfrozen most of the winter (unless it gets -20 and below a long time..then almost all of it freezes over anyway) so it would unfreeze first. I'm a river addict..when I realized the route we were taking wouldn't take us over the river I told mom I needed to go to Fred Meyer so we would go over it. :P I DID need to go..but still haha

Earlier I saw someone wearing capris, a short sleeve shirt with no jacket, flip flops, and was eating an ice cream sandwich. Woww Fairbanks :P

Gwichin: The Athabaskans of northeastern Alaska, once called Kutchin by whites. The world also describes their language

Yay I saw the Northern Lights last night! Mom said she got in bed and looked out her window and saw a bright glowy thing haha. It wasn't particularly amazing (though it was rather bright and moved and danced some) but I need to get my fill before it gets too light to see them!

Redoubt hasn't erupted since yesterday..here's a pic of it erupting! http://www.avo.alaska.edu/image_full.php?id=17020

pic of the day )

Gum boot: A chiton, or small mollusk, that looks something like a foot and sticks to rock like glue. Gum boots range from thimble-sized to a pound or so, and cook up very tasy

Mount Redoubt finally erupted! It's been restless since at least January. It started erupting last night at 10:38 PM and it stopped at 4:30 AM, but at 7:41 PM today it erupted again. It's erupted six times so far. So mom couldn't go to Anchorage..all flights between Anchorage and Fairbanks were canceled (ash is very unsafe to fly in). The ash has got as far as Denali National Park. It MIGHT get to Fairbanks if the wind is right. Drift Glacier on the volcano is melting. *sniff* Here's the Redoubt webcam if you'd like to look (though it's getting dark now so you should probably look at it tomorrow): http://www.avo.alaska.edu/webcam/Redoubt_-_Hut.php. How exciting! The volcanic stuff in the air might give us sweet purple sunsets..I saw it before when another Alaskan volcano erupted

pic of the day )

Greenie: One of the less derogatory terms for an environmentalist. Other nicknames include bunny hugger, tree hugger and posy sniffer. Greenies believe that no road in Alaska is so useful that the state wouldn't be better off without it

Another cold spell has hit..it's not supposed to be as bad as the last one though. I think it's supposed to last till next week followed by a chinook (yeah! I loveeee chinooks haha). Though we might have already left by then. Mom said the arctic front will follow us to Texas :P

A volcano near Anchorage named Mount Redoubt (I love its name haha) could erupt soon..it was making noises and there was seismic activity. I thought I had seen it when I went to Anchorage but I saw a picture of Mount Spurr and that one looked more like the picture I took. One of the times a volcano erupted the sky here were purpleish!

pic of the day )

Blue ticket: A one-way passage out of Alaska, awarded in earlier times to suspected criminals and other undesirables by the authorities. A return to the practice is, from time to time, advocated by old-timers, but modern jurisprudence frowns on a solution so simple and effective
