Not only is Joe Simpson a great mountaineer, he's a REALLY good writer. I'm reading his new novel The Sound of Gravity and it is AWESOME. He describes things SO well. I wonder if his other novel is as good. *adds to amazon list* It seems like mountaineers are good writers..Anatoli Boukreev and Gaston Rebuffat were too. I love books haha

I've had my apartment 2 years..wow. That's really amazing..it doesn't feel that long..

I'm convinced all the mountaineers have known each other at some point haha. I put Anatoli's name into Amazon and a couple of Joe Simpson's books came up (I'd read them before too..but somehow didn't remember). In one book he talked about Anatoli on Everest in 1996 and in the other HE MET ANATOLI AND HE SIGNED JOE'S COPY OF HIS BOOK OMG SO JEALOUS. Joe sad Anatoli was nice and he too thinks he was one of the best and strongest mountaineers. Aw yeahh. It feels like I'm struck by lightning when I think about him speaking in English (or even Russian..but English more). Even if it was halting broken English..that just made it even better. :P What's wrong with meeee? Haha (this post was really hard to write cause I'm so happy and fangirly I can't concentrate..omg haha *blushes*)

Day 7 - Something you love )

I've noticed the mountaineering books I read connect to each other somehow..one mentions a famous ascent or mountaineer and then I look at my bookshelf and find I have a book by the mountaineer or the ascent (lmao..I love how Brown Girl in the Ring came on when typing this. It was stuck in Joe Simpson's head when he was crawling back to camp after he broke his knee. I TOLD YOU IT'S ALL CONNECTED. Haha). I've been wanting to read books Reinhold Messner wrote (he was the first person to climb Everest without bottled oxygen) but they was too expensive to use on the gift card from Amazon and hadn't got around to buying them yet..well today I was getting books to price at work and what do I find? A book by Reinhold Messner. I was so ecstatic haha. Becky was like "I wondered how long it would take you to find that." :P My job is SERIOUSLY awesome haha

Joe Simpson, I love you but when you write your books you make yourself sound like an alcoholic. I swear it ALWAYS seems like he's drinking haha. Though he does have other good values I loved knowing about him (he doesn't have it in him to hurt people..aww)

Day 90 - A picture of you wearing your favorite color )

Would you rather always have a little something stuck in between your teeth or always have a little dirt in your eye? Always have a little something stuck in between my teeth

I was reading one of Joe Simpson's books and I knew he had broke his ankle on a fall on a mountain..but then I read he had walked 20,000 feet up a mountain ON CRUTCHES. Man..that guy is amazing! <3

Whoa..the producer of Touching the Void and The Beckoning Silence is one of the producers on I Shouldn't Be Alive! No wonder that show is so awesome haha. They should get Joe on it..his story would be perfect for that show

Dad came over and told about his trip to Hawaii (they stayed on Maui). They walked up to a volcano's crater (it's not active anymore), saw whales, stumbled upon a nude beach (HAHA), stayed in a huuuuuge hotel room, etc. Soooo jealous. He better take me next time :P

This is "Brown Girl in the Ring" by Boney M. It's the song Joe Simpson got stuck in his head when he was trying to get back to Simon. Joe said he HATES it but I really like it haha. It's so catchy and addictive but it gets stuck in my head REALLY easily. I love the comments too..most of them are about Joe haha (Like this one: "Oh man, almost died listening to this song, repeating in my head over and over and over and over and over again in my head when I was just inches from base camp. Oh God, the humanity")

It's dad's 63rd birthday today..hope it was good haha

Joe Simpson has become my hero..he's so inspiring and amazing. If I ever climb a mountain (I want to!) it'll be because of him <3 (All this from just randomly finding a book..wow. My job has literally changed my life..)

Yesterday I spent some quality time with mom haha. We first went to a Chinese restaurant in North Pole called Pagoda that everyone says is really good. I had tried some of Pat's food she got there and it was really good so I wanted to go. It was pretty good..I got the Mongolian beef. After that we were gonna go back to Fairbanks but mom saw "mall" and was like "OMG we have to check out the North Pole mall it's gotta be as exciting as the Fairbanks mall!" haha. We went in and I saw a salon type place. I got my eyebrows waxed cause they really needed it. They also did pedicures and I felt like getting one. I called mom (she was in another store) and she agreed to do one with me. I hadn't done something like that in a long time so I figured why not haha. This was my first one! It was nice..they put a bunch of lotions and stuff on your feet and legs and painted your nails. Mmm soft cleanliness haha. There was also a hair cutting place in the mall and I would have got it cut since my hair really needs it but I had already made an appointment somewhere else. Ah well. After our nails dried we went back to Fairbanks and went to Wal-Mart for groceries. Then we went home. Yay time with mom haha

I was watching The Beckoning Silence with mom and I kept squealing when Joe Simpson was on the screen hehe

The aurora was out again last night..there's something soothing and peaceful about watching them dance :D

Day 16- Scared Face )
glacier_kitty: (Default)
Awhile ago in the bookstore I found this book totally by chance..it's called Touching the Void by Joe Simpson. Joe and his partner Simon were climbing a mountain and Joe fell and shattered his knee. Simon lowered him down the mountain..but then he lowered him over a huge crevasse. Simon couldn't hear him cause there was a storm and he had to cut the rope. Joe survived his fall through the crevasse, dragged himself over the glacier and the moraine, past a lake and back to camp. It was an amazing story. There was a documentary made and I got to see that when mom and I were looking through the movies on Netflix. That made the story even more amazing. Recently I read another of Joe's books called The Beckoning Silence. Part of it was about his attempt at climbing the Eiger in Switzerland. He also talked about a group of people in the 30s that tried to summit the North Face of the Eiger (it had never been successfully summited before). They were Joe's inspiration to mountain climb (their story is also told in The White Spider..which I'm totally gonna read). Reading that made me fascinated with the Eiger. The Beckoning Silence was made into a documentary as well and I found it on Youtube! I watched part of it yesterday. It's AWESOME..it's sooo good. It talks about the group of people from the 30s and has reenactments of them climbing. It also shows Joe climbing the Eiger and him talking about his fascination with the mountain. There's something about watching it that makes it all the more awesome. I'm totally posting it here when I finish watching it. I'm so glad I found that book at work..Joe Simpson is awesome :D

They want to raise my rent to $330 instead of $235. Failll

Day 11- Crying Face )

Would you rather have an ugly wart on your big toe for two weeks or a big pimple on the tip of your nose for three days? The pimple..even though those kind are the most painful kind. If you accidentally touch your nose..owww
