Today was the Literacy Council's volunteer appreciation picnic (we didn't have it last year, of course) and had to get another picture with Elias!

He saw me wave to him and my gesture to come over, and he got so happy and excitedly came to where I was, awww. He's probably the happiest kid I've ever met, and always loves visiting everyone at work (especially his dad lol). I think he turns 5 this year..wow!

This was the last pic I took of him, in 2019:

Wow, look at how much he's grown since then!! I love his smile lol

A couple English language students got up and made speeches about how all the teachers have changed there lives, which was awesome. Making a speech in your own language is hard enough, I can't imagine doing one in another language! Ryan and Jo came too and got to meet some of my coworkers, which was cool! Denise said we'll have to do another game night sometime..definitely!

For today's childhood journal entries, I'm going to post my trip to Washington, DC in 2002, and Mammoth, California in 2003. It's really fun typing them up here and making current day observations haha. I love my little observations from then too ("the lawn was very green!")

13. Do you like when friends stop by unexpectedly? Sure, especially if I haven't seen them in a long time!

14. How old were you when you moved to your current home? I was 20

Today's trivia: Gatorade was named after the University of Florida Gators. A group of doctors invented the drink in a science lab on campus in 1965

For years now, I've noticed my mouth/throat feels weird and itchy when I eat certain foods, like apples and melons..mom thought I was making up excuses not to eat healthy food lol, but then I came across oral allergy syndrome, which matched what I had been experiencing! Here are some foods it says are common with oral allergy syndrome (ones that I've reacted to in bold):

Birch pollen: apple, almond, carrot, celery, cherry, hazelnut, kiwi, peach, pear, plum
Grass pollen: celery, melons, oranges, peaches, tomato
Ragweed pollen: banana, cucumber, melons, sunflower seeds, zucchini

I'm so happy there's an actual condition for this and it's not just me being weird lol. Yesterday I had a couple apple slices that were offered to me, and sure enough, my mouth got itchy..but I can eat applesauce and drink apple juice with no problems (and I don't necessarily get the reaction every time). Weird! Cooked veggies are fine as well. I am allergic to birch pollen, so it makes sense I'm sensitive to food related to it. Anyone else experience this too?

Yesterday was work's Volunteer Appreciation Picnic..Kathy won the best volunteer award, which she definitely earned..she's been volunteering there 11 years!! She brought a bunch of her family, like her kids and grandkids and husband. That's only the second time I've ever met her husband! Her husband and her son are both dentists and work at the same practice..I chose that practice for my dentist, so it was weird seeing my dentist there LOL (oops, you didn't see me eat that cake.. ;)). They're the best dentists I've been to..they actually compliment your teeth instead of just saying negative things..the hygienist has a picture on her wall that says "we cater to cowards." Now I'm less scared going to the dentist. :) Her grandkids always impress me when I see them..they're nice, polite and well-behaved. Her husband's a pilot, so I told him he should fly me to Black Rapids Glacier sometime hehe. ;) Great family!!

Today was LCA's annual Volunteer Appreciation Potluck..for once it wasn't cold and rainy! Mike was still telling me how awesome it was when I won my award two years ago lol (I was COMPLETELY surprised..it was very nice haha). Work parties are always fun :P

It's so weird..I've had a couple people say that when they were looking for one of my geocaches someone in the building was watching and saying they were getting warmer while crossing the parking lot, and another log said a passerby "in the know" said they were getting close! Wow, my cache seems to be kinda famous! Haha. The last person who found it posted a really nice picture of their three kids looking very happy and one proudly holding up my cache..that picture made me happy too :D

Today was the Literacy Council's annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic. I don't know why, but whenever we have it it's cloudy, rainy and/or cold. Today was no exception..it was raining (has been all day) and FREEZING. Like you could see your breath. Jeez lol. Oddly enough, WAY more people came this year than last year (it was nicer then, but still chilly). We're Alaskans, weather doesn't stop us! Haha. Mom made these cute little penguins everyone loved..she's so creative! It was nice though..LCA has such awesome people that make a dreary atmosphere fun. I can't wait to get under my electric blanket later haha..brr

DAY 14: The most foul thing you have ever eaten )

Today's trivia: Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient at waking you up in the morning

Yesterday was the annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic for work. For once the weather was nice..the wind made it chilly, but usually it's cloudy and cold and blah. We had food and then Mike (the Executive Director) handed out the three awards we always give. He got to the second one and said it was the Betsy Robertson award, which is for someone who has made a big contribution to the Literacy Council (I've met Betsy, she's a judge at the Biz Bee and very nice). I was looking around wondering which person had donated money to the Literacy Council (that's who it usually goes to). Then Mike started saying "the award is going to a young lady who has volunteered here many years. She always comes in in the morning with a smile on her face and I always know what the weather is like outside." I was like "that sounds like me! But it can't be me!" Mike said other nice things I can't remember (good thing mom filmed it!) and then said "the award goes to Heather Moritz!" I was like "ME?!!" That was a COMPLETE surprise haha! Becky said the look on my face was priceless and that alone was worth coming to the event. :P I went up and people took pics of Mike and I. People were cheering and clapping like crazy!! My face was probably so red haha. As I went to sit down Mike was like "if you want to know about glaciers or where the best smoothies in town are talk to Heather!" I'm amazed they kept it so secret..mom and Nina had already known! (I was wondering why she said "I have to be beautiful for my daughter on her special day!" when I asked why she was wearing makeup. I was like "huh??" haha) I never expected to get an award! I love the Literacy Council, they are so awesome. <3 So many nice surprises lately!
