Cold temperatures absent from Alaska this winter

ANCHORAGE — Weather watchers are taking note of a mostly mild winter so far in Fairbanks and Anchorage, which have seen lower-than-normal snowfall and higher-than-normal temperatures.

In Fairbanks, the city has not had a day this winter that the official temperature stayed below zero, making Tuesday the fourth-latest date that has happened since 1904. Nor has the mercury dipped lower than 20 below at any point, the fifth latest date so far, the Weather Service says. Despite some recent snowfall, Fairbanks is still below average for snow, with nearly 18 inches, about 14 inches below normal for mid-December.

As for the comparatively warm weather, it does not appear to be leaving anytime soon.

For as far into the future as meteorologists can reliably estimate the weather — about two weeks — there does not appear to be a significant cool down coming, said Rick Thoman, climate science and services manager for the National Weather Service in Alaska. That means that as time goes on, more records could fall, Thoman said.

In the mid-20s in December?? Yes please! Loving it haha. I remember last Christmas it was like -36. Too bad all the darkness makes it harder to geocache though..

The craziest thing happened earlier..I was craving a smoothie at work and was wishing dad could bring me one like he does sometimes..I sent a "bring me a smoothie" message to him hoping he'd hear my thoughts haha, but figured it would be a long shot. Then like..5 minutes later dad comes in with a smoothie!!! I was so shocked and amazed lol! It definitely hit the spot :D

FAIRBANKS - The weather system that's brought warm dry weather to Interior Alaska and cold stormy weather to the Lower 48 isn't forecast to change this week.

For Fairbanks, that means more sunny weather and warm temperatures, especially in the hills, which will erode this year's meager snow pack, according to Bob Fischer, lead forecaster at the National Weather Service.

High temperatures this week are forecast to be in the 20s with lows between zero and five above in the central Tanana Valley. They're expected to be significantly higher in the hills because of an inversion.

"We're getting some nice banana belt weather," Fischer said. "The bad news is if some time down the road ... if we get a cold snap there's not much snow on the ground, that runs the increased chance of frozen pipes."

This year's snow pack is about 2 inches, well below the normal for mid-November of about 8 inches, he said. For now, the long-range forecast going into next week doesn't predict either snow or a cold snap.

"The forecast model suggests maybe some weakening of the ridge early next week but there would still be above-normal temperatures," he said. "I think it's safe to say the likelihood of snow in the next seven to 10 days is pretty remote.

The weather is caused by the remnants of Typhoon Nuri, which is causing a high-pressure ridge centered over the Yukon Territory. Alaska, on the western side, is getting warm air from the tropics. The Midwest, meanwhile, is getting Arctic air.

The upper 30s in November? Loving it! Maybe it's making up for the rainy summer haha

FAIRBANKS - Less than three days after a 5.1 magnitude quake rattled Interior Alaska, residents were jolted by another on Thursday morning.

Early measurements pegged it as a magnitude 5.2, but after review, the quake was measured at 5.0. It was centered 10 miles northeast of Minto, two miles from the site of Monday's quake and on the same fault system as a series of quakes that shook the area in late August. Thursday's quake occurred at 8:30 a.m. and was about 10 miles deep.

It was felt from Delta Junction to Nenana. Residents in some areas reported Thursday's quake was longer and felt stronger than Monday's. One Fairbanks resident reported broken dishes and others said items were knocked off shelves.

Yep, I felt it. I was reading in bed before work and everything started shaking. It did feel bigger than the previous one, even though it was a little smaller. I guess it's good the fault is releasing tension with smaller quakes rather than the tension building up and releasing a big one. Alaska is never boring :P

FAIRBANKS - Winter is expected to make its first appearance of the year in much of Fairbanks on Tuesday, with snow showers forecast for much of the area.

National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Berg said residents in the hills outside Fairbanks can expect snow accumulation of as much as half an inch on Tuesday afternoon. Lower elevations will likely get a mixture of rain and snow.

Areas from Delta to Denali Park are also expected to receive a heavy dusting of snow on Tuesday.

A "hit and run" weather front from Northwest Alaska is delivering the moist, cool weather, but it should pass through the area quickly. Berg said the weather pattern should last about 12 hours, and that any snow that accumulates should leave quickly.

"It's not going to stick around — it's probably going to melt off pretty quickly," Berg said.

Still, it represents the end of a balmy September, with temperatures dipping into the 20s during the evenings tonight and Tuesday night. Although temperatures are expected to rise slightly after the front moves through Interior Alaska, Berg said no more warm days are in the forecast.

"Temperature-wise, we've turned the corner," Berg said. "They're going to get consistently colder from here on out."

Well, I guess it had to happen eventually (I'm never ready for it though haha :P)..76 last week, snow this week..crazy. It definitely feels like it could snow out there..brr

FAIRBANKS - The last gasp of summer that arrived in Interior Alaska over the weekend was the hottest ever to hit Fairbanks this time of year.

The temperature in Fairbanks on Saturday and Sunday broke or tied the record for the daily highs on Sept. 13 and Sept. 14. The unseasonably warm temperatures peaked at 76 degrees Fahrenheit, recorded just before 4 p.m. Sunday.

The new record for Sunday replaces a previous record high of 73, recorded in 1938. The temperature peaked Saturday at 74 degrees, tying the record, which was set in 1965. Fairbanks also set a record for the highest minimum temperature on Saturday, as the temperature never dropped below 51 degrees.

The normal temperature range for this time of year generally falls between highs in the low 50s and lows in the mid 30s. Forecasters at the National Weather Service said the unseasonably warm weather should carry through into Monday and begin to slowly taper off from there. The temperature on Tuesday should be back in the lower 60s and should be back into the 50s by Thursday.

Wow! It was soooo nice yesterday..warm and beautiful. I wish the whole summer had been like that..

FAIRBANKS - After all the flooded basements, waterlogged gardens and ruined weekends, Fairbanksans have this: They made it through the wettest summer in recorded history.

A brief noon shower on Friday pushed the area into new territory, putting the overall precipitation total at 11.62 inches. That surpasses a record set in 1930, when Fairbanks was doused with 11.59 inches of rain.

The summer record tallies the total precipitation received in June, July and August. Local rain records date back to 1906.

This year's total was spurred by unprecedented rainfall in June and near-record precipitation in July. In June, a 3.56-inch total bested a record set in 1949. In July, the 5.78 inches of rain made it the second-wettest July ever.

Wow..at least we broke the record after all that. :P It was COLD this morning and the plants are changing colors..noooooo. People are seeing the Northern Lights already though..cool!

FAIRBANKS — Not even one week into August, summer 2014 has reached second place for the most rain on record, and is only half an inch from the record.

As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, 11.05 inches had fallen at Fairbanks International Airport since the beginning of June, approaching the all-time summer record of 11.59 inches, which was set in 1930. Summer 1967, which had 10.67 inches, is now third all-time. The summer season for record keeping includes June, July and August.

Between 1 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 0.64 inches of rain fell at the airport. Rain totals varied across the Interior: Circle received 0.77 inches of rain, while Eielson Air Force Base recorded 0.56 inches. Almost 2 inches has fallen this August in Fairbanks.

Based on past numbers, there’s a good chance Fairbanks will set a new rainfall record, according to Rick Thoman, Climate Science and Service Manager at the Fairbanks National Weather Service office.

“In the last 100 years, only about seven Augusts have not received half an inch of rain between Aug. 6 and the 31st,” Thoman said.

Jeez..well, I guess if it's that close, we may as well break the record. :P I hope this doesn't mean the winter will be super snowy and cold..

FAIRBANKS—If you thought June was wet, welcome to July.

The record-setting deluge that has nearly drowned the central and eastern Interior continued in force Tuesday night and Wednesday as rain continued to pour down in amounts not seen in Fairbanks since the historic flood of 1967.

Nearly 2 inches of rain — 1.92 officially — was recorded at the Fairbanks International Airport on Tuesday, shattering the daily record of 0.65 of an inch in 1935 and nearly surpassing the average rainfall for the entire month — 2.16 inches — in one day.

An additional 1.39 inches of rain had fallen at the airport as of 11 a.m. Wednesday, making the two-day rainfall total of 3.31 inches for Tuesday and Wednesday the third-wettest on record in 102 years of weather records in Fairbanks, meteorologist Rick Thoman at the National Weather Service in Fairbanks said. It marked only the fourth time in history with back-to-back days with more than 1 inch of rain at the airport, he said.

DAY 29: If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be? )
glacier_kitty: (pawprints on your heart)
1. Lightly touching her forehead against you
Called head bunting, this feline act of affection is delivered only to the A-listers in a cat's life. Your cat will face you, lower her head and lean forward so that the top of her head touches your forehead, face or other body part. This loving touch can often release feel-good hormones called endorphins in your cat and you.

Yes it does lol. Snowy especially likes to cuddle with his chin buried in your hair and your chin resting on the top of his head

2. Cheek rubbing you
Think of your cat as a feline graffiti artist. To make her turf really feel like home, she will rub her cheeks against the corners of furniture and, possibly, your legs or hands when you pet her. This act secretes oils from her facial glands. It's her way of claiming you as her own. Just be grateful that she does so by cheek rubbing, not spraying.

Abby claimed me the moment I met her lol. It's kinda gross when she's drooling though haha :P

3. Twitching the tip of her tail
The feline tail acts like a mood barometer. The tail puffs out when your cat is frightened or agitated. Conversely, your cat expresses love to you when she approaches you with her tail hoisted lazily up in the air and the very tip twitches. In cat speak, she is saying, "You rock my world!"

That amuses me haha. I don't think Abby can do it like other cats though since I think part of her tail is missing..

4. Holding eye contact and sharing a soft blink
Don't expect a cat to maintain a steady eye-to-eye stare with a new houseguest. Cats save eye contact for people they know and trust, like you. The bond is accented when she blinks softly at you. This is the equivalent of a kitty kiss. Respond by softly blinking back.

I love when she does that <3

5. Turning on the purr power
This steady, rhythmic sound emitted when your cat inhales and exhales is often associated with contentment. But cats also purr when they need to self-calm or while nursing a litter; however, your cat saves the special full-bodied rumble as a smile directed to you. It is her way of saying, "I love you."

Purring is one of the best sounds ever <3

6. Sitting on you or beside you
Cats crave warm places to nap and sleep, but when they bypass a comfy cat bed or your bedroom pillow to perch on your lap, you should feel honored. Your cat has sized up her options and is conveying that she prefers being with you rather than being by herself in her cat bed.

I definitely feel honored when she (or any cat) sits on my lap..I love the warm and cozy feeling!

7. Kneading his paws on your lap
If you need a sign it is time to trim your cat's nails, nothing is clearer than when he perches on your lap, purrs and starts kneading your thighs with her front paws. But this is also a sign of affection. Experts say that this action beckons your adult cat back to a safe, welcoming memory when she was nuzzling his mother for milk as a newborn kitten. He is being affectionate and a bit nostalgic.

One reason I like putting a blanket on my lap..though she'll knead on my arm anyway :P

8. Licking your hair and earlobes
OK, neither of these actions may rate on your top 10 list of affection preferences, but your cat is regarding you as another cat - albeit a big one - in her inner circle. Only special "cats" are deemed worthy of these special grooming sessions. In a multicat household, mutual grooming is a sign of trust and friendship. Pay attention to which cats, if any, in your home team up for mutual grooming. You may be the only one meriting such a gift!

Abby likes to lick my cheek the most..kinda gross after she's eaten haha

9. Bringing you dead mice, birds and other so-called gifts
Evolution and domestication have not stripped your cat of her inner hunter. After a successful hunt, she may deposit a mouse head or lizard tail in a place she knows you will visit - like your pillow. Yuck? Yes, but your cat is sharing her prey prize with you, a true sign of trusted friendship.

Yep, and she's VERY proud when she brings it to me haha

Yay, Abby loves me. :D (But I already knew that hehe)

Week of warm weather for Alaska: An unusual bend in high-altitude air currents is expected to bring warm and wet weather conditions to the Interior and Western Alaska, storminess in Southcentral, and an unseasonable lack of precipitation for Southeast. That's according to the National Weather Service, whose forecasters expect the jet stream's shift to bring the tropical moisture north all of next week. Temperatures should be near freezing on the North Slope, and in the 40s or higher for most parts of Alaska to the south, forecasters say. The weather pattern is expected to delay any snowfall in Southcentral Alaska

The honorary cat mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, is in bad shape after being attacked by a dog.

Mayor Stubbs, the cat, suffered a fractured sternum and a punctured lung, and already has undergone three hours of surgery, owner Lauri Stec told KTUU.

The part-Manx cat clawed his way onto the political scene of Talkeetna, a town of about 900 people north of Anchorage, through a write-in campaign. He has held the honorary position for more than 15 years.

His election earned him enough press to catapult the town at the base of Mount McKinley into a tourist destination. Mayor Stubbs has tens of thousands of followers on social media. Many Facebook friends are asking how to donate to his medical bills.

Stec said the offending dog was not picked up by animal control because it happened late Saturday evening. But she plans to file a report: "As far as I'm concerned he needs to go away," she said about the dog.

The would-be dog assassin is in hiding, Stec said, and Stubbs is recovering at a veterinarian's office in Wasilla, KTUU reports.

"All I can say right now is he's holding his own," she said.

Poor Stubbs!! I was so sad reading the article on Alaska Dispatch. I hope he'll recover ok, I love seeing him when I go to Talkeetna!

"The retreat of the Columbia [glacier] contributes to global sea-level rise, mostly through iceberg calving. This one glacier accounts for nearly half of the ice loss in the Chugach Mountains. However, the ice losses are not exclusively tied to increasing air and water temperatures. Climate change may have given the Columbia an initial nudge off of the moraine, but what has accelerated its disintegration has more to do with mechanical processes than warming temperatures. In fact, when the Columbia reaches the shoreline, its retreat will likely slow down. The more stable surface will cause the rate of calving to decline, making it possible for the glacier to start rebuilding a moraine and advancing once again."

I knew it! Hehe. That paragraph came from this awesome article. That slideshow of the glacier's retreat is crazyy. I can't wait till it advances again (though I guess it'll be awhile haha)!

I really don't like it..it's so miserable! I've never seen a summer here this hot before. Yesterday at 8 PM it was still in the 80s! I also read this: The low temperature this morning at the Fairbanks Airport was a balmy 70 degrees. If the temperature remains 70 or warmer through midnight this will be the warmest daily low temperature recorded in Fairbanks in 98 years. The only low temperature warmer than this was 76 degrees that was observed on June 26th 1915...which is a questionable record. In any case...it is very likely that today's low temperature will be one of the warmest ever observed in Fairbanks." Whoa! The weather is crazy this year! (How did I ever survive in Texas??)

I didn't, and forgot about it till the meeting ended at 6:30. I definitely saw a big plume then, and it definitely wasn't a controlled burn. I looked on my phone at dinner and found out it was at mile 16 or 17 Chena Hot Springs Road. I wanted to go and see it, but of course they blocked the road and would impede firefighters anyway. Two Rivers Lodge was in the path of the fire, but luckily a ton of people responded and no buildings were damaged (we saw one of the firefighting planes..cool!).
