FAIRBANKS - The last gasp of summer that arrived in Interior Alaska over the weekend was the hottest ever to hit Fairbanks this time of year.
The temperature in Fairbanks on Saturday and Sunday broke or tied the record for the daily highs on Sept. 13 and Sept. 14. The unseasonably warm temperatures peaked at 76 degrees Fahrenheit, recorded just before 4 p.m. Sunday.
The new record for Sunday replaces a previous record high of 73, recorded in 1938. The temperature peaked Saturday at 74 degrees, tying the record, which was set in 1965. Fairbanks also set a record for the highest minimum temperature on Saturday, as the temperature never dropped below 51 degrees.
The normal temperature range for this time of year generally falls between highs in the low 50s and lows in the mid 30s. Forecasters at the National Weather Service said the unseasonably warm weather should carry through into Monday and begin to slowly taper off from there. The temperature on Tuesday should be back in the lower 60s and should be back into the 50s by Thursday.
Wow! It was soooo nice yesterday..warm and beautiful. I wish the whole summer had been like that..
