FAIRBANKS - Winter is expected to make its first appearance of the year in much of Fairbanks on Tuesday, with snow showers forecast for much of the area.

National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Berg said residents in the hills outside Fairbanks can expect snow accumulation of as much as half an inch on Tuesday afternoon. Lower elevations will likely get a mixture of rain and snow.

Areas from Delta to Denali Park are also expected to receive a heavy dusting of snow on Tuesday.

A "hit and run" weather front from Northwest Alaska is delivering the moist, cool weather, but it should pass through the area quickly. Berg said the weather pattern should last about 12 hours, and that any snow that accumulates should leave quickly.

"It's not going to stick around — it's probably going to melt off pretty quickly," Berg said.

Still, it represents the end of a balmy September, with temperatures dipping into the 20s during the evenings tonight and Tuesday night. Although temperatures are expected to rise slightly after the front moves through Interior Alaska, Berg said no more warm days are in the forecast.

"Temperature-wise, we've turned the corner," Berg said. "They're going to get consistently colder from here on out."

Well, I guess it had to happen eventually (I'm never ready for it though haha :P)..76 last week, snow this week..crazy. It definitely feels like it could snow out there..brr

Today's trivia: The name "Buckeye" came from the Native Americans who noticed that the glossy, chestnut-brown seeds with the lighter circular "eye" looked very similar to the eye of a buck (male) deer

Ohmigosh, that is definitely a HUGE difference with it being 76 last week to snowing this week! At least they're not expecting the snow to stick around for long, but still... It definitely seems like a turning point. Eep! Hopefully you and your family will be able to enjoy Arizona in the winter soon enough! It still may snow in Payson, but at least it won't ever get below 0 (I don't think haha).

At least your weather is always truth. Reno is so up and down - it literally changes in a matter of 10 minutes. Who knows when it'll start getting cold here though I do hope for snow this winter! :)
