Yesterday I went over to Denise's house for the first time..we kept talking about watching a movie together, and I wanted to meet her cats, especially since she has to put one of them to sleep on Friday. :( We got Mexican food and listened to The Worst Journey in the World (yeeess ;)) on the drive there. Her poor kitty Spud is 18 and not doing well at all..he's wobbly when he walks, gets confused easily, and just looks miserable. It reminded me of how Snowy was during his last weeks and days..it's hard to see your pets like that. :( He did purr for me though, which was nice. Her other kitty Snagglepuss (he indeed has a "snaggly tooth" lol) absolutely ADORES Denise..he always looks at her with intense love and follows her everywhere lol. It was adorable when he curled up in her lap and put his nose under his tail. <3 We watched Guardians of the Galaxy, which was awesome (I can't believe I hadn't seen it yet lol). Groot more than absolutely lived up to my expectations (I've always heard good things about him). Beating up bad guys and looking back at everyone and smiling? Releasing fireflies in the dark? He is so cool!! I can't wait to see the second one, and the new Avengers movie lol..I love the humor in those movies :P

I wish I was in Hawaii so I could see Kilauea erupting (if I could do it safely anyway)..it would be interesting to watch!

Wow, cool! This is what Kilauea has been doing lately..why can't it do that when I'm there?? Haha (that one boat looked WAY too close to the lava though D:)

I wanted so badly to see into the crater like that while I was there haha. Maybe next time we'll fly over in a helicopter. So awesome to experience, even just seeing steam and the glow. :D (And that is NOT how you pronounce Pu'u O'o haha. You pronounce every letter in Hawaiian :P)

Yesterday we went to the summit of Mauna Kea! Again we went in a van with other people and guides (you have to have 4 wheel drive to go up there). I was kinda nervous about the altitude since it's 13,803 feet. We had dinner at 7,000 feet so we could acclimate. There were other buses there and there was a couple from Fairbanks and another guy from Anchorage!! Awesomee haha..maybe I'll see them in Fred Meyer one day. :P As we were driving up it was foggy but once we got high enough we got out of the clouds. As we drove up the guide pointed out the TERMINAL MORAINE of a glacier that used to be on the volcano!! There was even PERMAFROST up there..OMG haha. We got up on the summit in time to see the sunset..nicee. The altitude made me feel WEIRD..like my eyes couldn't focus and I just felt..woozy or something. If I moved my head too fast it would just hurt. Weirdd. There are a bunch of telescopes up there..pretty cool. After the sun set we went down to 11,000 feet to stargaze! Mauna Kea is one of the best places to stargaze..there's less atmosphere, it's dark, the airflow is stable, etc. There were definitely a ton of stars! The sky just seemed to shimmer. I saw the Milky Way too! The guides pointed out constellations and told us the mythology behind them. We also saw Jupiter! Way cool. Now the stars at sea level just look washed out and blah haha. Eventually clouds started moving it so we went to check out the visitor's center at 9,000 feet. You could actually see the summit eruption of Kilauea from there!! SO awesome..it actually got pretty bright for awhile. I later read the lava had risen and overflowed the inner ledge of the caldera. Omggg..that is SUPER awesome and exciting!! After that we just drove back to the hotel..I had a headache from the altitude..ouch. It was interesting though

Today we went down to Kona and went shopping. Ryan spent over $200 on clothes at Macy's! Eesh..that store is super expensive. D: PJs for $50?! Yeah, no way. We also went over to Kmart..pants for $8, that's more like it. :P We ate dinner and looked around in more shops and now we're back at the hotel. Time to relax!

Today we took a tour to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We went in a van with other people (13 in total). The guide picks you up at different hotels..one was the Mauna Lani! I stayed there last time with dad and LOVED it..it was nice to see it again. :D Mark was pretty knowledgeable about Hawaiian legends, plants, animals, etc. It's nice to have that extra touch. It takes a couple hours to get to the park..it's on the wet side of the island. It was interesting transitioning from sere hilly land to wet lush forest. When we went through the dry area Mark was telling about GLACIERS that used to be on the volcanoes around us!! WHAT..glaciers in HAWAII??! He even showed us a terminal moraine from one of the glaciers!! I never thought I'd see anything relating to glaciers here! He said when the glaciers melted all that silty dirt blew off the volcanoes and formed the mounds around us. AWESOME haha. It was rainy and chilly while we were there..I feel like it's like that everywhere besides our hotel..wth haha. We drove to the summit of Kilauea (4,190 feet) and looked down at the caldera, which was steaming! There's a lava lake there (you can't see it unless you were in a helicopter or something). Pretty cool. We also explored lava fields, went to these cliffs (it was super fun to watch the waves just smash up against them! You could feel it in your feet! You could also see steam in the distance from lava going into the ocean) and explored a lava tube..way cool! Lava looks so interesting. There was also a lovely forest with huge ferns and cool bird sounds. We ate dinner near Kilauea's summit (it was dark by now) and then went back up to the summit to see the glow from the lava! (Luckily the clouds weren't totally obscuring it) It was so cool..it was bright orange/red and you could see it pulsing as the lava rose and fell! Wow. Then it was time for the long dark drive back to our hotels..luckily I had a flashlight (Mark gave them to us for the walk to the summit) so I read on the way back. I'm glad to be back on the warm side of the island haha..or at least the sunny/warm window at the hotel. :P Now..bed!
