Yesterday we started the journey to Barrow..for some reason, we had to fly to Anchorage first..that makes no sense at all haha. Later in the flight we were told we had to divert to Deadhorse because the visibility was too low in Barrow to land. It was cool to see Deadhorse and Prudhoe Bay..I felt like I had seen a couple of the buildings on Ice Road Truckers haha. We waited on the plane..and waited..we were there at least two hours, probably more. I finished an entire book haha (my 45th!! I've made my goal for this year already!!). Eventually we were told we had to go back to Anchorage because they closed the runway cause of construction or something..and visibility may have still been bad anyway. We were all just like "NOOOO!" haha. Thankfully the flight was only an hour and 30 minutes both ways..we got back to Anchorage at midnight. Thankfully they rebooked everyone for the next morning at 10. We found a hotel (we could have stayed at the airport I guess, but no way..I already had a migraine and we'd be too tired to enjoy Barrow anyway), probably the seediest one I've ever stayed at (it's at the top of the list anyway). O_o As Brenda said, "it was one step up from 'I ain't staying here!'" The beds seemed free of bugs, which was really all that mattered. It was so nice to finally sleep lol
Today we finally got in to Barrow! (I saw some mountains and glaciers poking up from the clouds, yay!) Barrow is one of the most depressing, desolate and muddy places I've ever been to. It's super flat and VERY windy (there are no trees or mountains or anything for many miles, so there's nothing to break the wind). The wind made it so cold haha. After getting checked in to the hotel we took a tour of Barrow, which was cool. Our tour guide was an Inupiat Eskimo and told us how he harpooned a whale (they have to so they can feed their families, and he said they feel no pain). He knew about geocaching, so we got a few, including the northernmost one in the US!! Yay, now we have the northernmost and southernmost geocache in the US. :D We also got to stand at Point Barrow, the northernmost point in the US..awesome! I also noticed the weather changed CONSTANTLY..there'd be some sun and blue sky and like a minute later there would be fog and rain..so weird haha. It was cool seeing the different landmarks, like old sod houses and stuff. After the tour we walked to the store and back..sooo coldd omg. I was so happy to relax at the hotel after that and eat dinner haha. Now I'm gonna take a nice warm shower and relax in bed :D
