I finished my volcanoes essay. You were supposed to pick three significant volcanoes and write about eruptions and human significance. Then you had to pick the one you thought was the most significant in human history

Volcanoes are some of the most powerful forces on Earth. They can erupt and destroy whole towns, or they can just have little eruptions, just spewing out a little lava or ash. This paper will discuss three volcanoes that have had a significant effect in human history.
The first volcano is Mount Tambora. Tambora is a 9,350 foot stratovolcano in the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia. Before it erupted in 1915, it was thought the volcano had a 5,000 year repose period. It’s had at least four eruptions in human history, the last a minor eruption in 1967.
On April 5, 1815, Tambora came to life after 5,000 years of silence. The first eruption could be heard 800 miles away and ash fell in east Java. That was just the beginning. Five days later, on April 10, the real show began. At 7 PM, three flaming columns merged into one. The volcano was literally on fire. Pumice stones and ash rained down on the land. Pyroclastic flows swept down on all sides of the island, destroying the town of Tambora. 38 cubic miles of pyroclastic deposits and 12 cubic miles of magma were ejected into the air. Ash fell 800 miles away from the volcano. The force of the eruption caused part of the volcano to collapse, leaving a caldera – 4,100 feet of the volcano was lost. At least 92,000 people were killed from that alone. The 1815 Tambora eruption was the most powerful eruption in recorded history.
The cloud of ash Tambora ejected stayed in the atmosphere for months, blotting out the sun and killing crops. Over the next year, temperatures dropped five degrees. In the summer of 1816, snow fell in June in Canada and the US and frost was recorded in every month. Europe became very cold. Because of the Napoleonic Wars, there were already food shortages, but the volcano made it worse. Around 200,000 people died from starvation. 1816 was known as “the year without a summer.” The cold summers had positive effects too - Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein and Baron Karl Christian Ludwig von Drais de Sauerbrun invented the bicycle.
The second volcano is Krakatoa, located in the Pacific Ocean between Java and Sumatra. Krakatoa is a 2,667 foot stratovolcano. It has erupted many times in human history, though an exact number is unknown. It last erupted in 2012.
Before Krakatoa erupted in 1883, earthquakes shook the island. In June 1883, small volcanic eruptions occurred. Finally, on August 27, 1883, the volcano unleashed its fury. Four huge eruptions from 14 vents shook the volcano. Pumice and ash were shot into the sky. Sailors on ships miles from the volcano were pelted with pumice and deafened by the explosion. The final eruption literally tore the island apart. The sound traveled across the ocean, reaching the island Diego Garcia, 2,000 miles away. Tsunamis killed 36,000 people. Ash blocked the sun and caused spectacular sunsets. Temperature fell for the next couple years. Because of the invention of the telegraph, news of the eruption reached Europe and the US within hours, making the event one of the first big news stories to travel around the world quickly. The public was fascinated they were able to get news so quickly.
The third significant volcano is Mount Saint Helens. St. Helens is an 8,363 foot stratovolcano located in Washington state. It has erupted many times, usually with a 200 year to 15,000 year repose time. It last erupted in 2008. Native Americans called St. Helens “Louwala-Clough,” meaning “smoking mountain.”
In 1980, Mt. St. Helens awakened. There were earthquake swarms and steam explosions. The north flank bulged out 450 feet. On May 18, 1980, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook the volcano. The bulge suddenly slid away in one of the biggest landslides in recorded history. Ash, rocks and steam exploded and traveled northward at 300 miles per hour. Pyroclastic flows spread around the volcano for five miles. The hot gases melted ice on the volcano, causing lahars to flood river valleys and destroy trees and bridges. Thousands of animals were killed and 600 square kilometers of forests were destroyed. The Pacific Northwest was plunged into darkness. 57 people died. The explosion took 1,314 feet off the mountain, leaving a crater.
Based on my research, I believe the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa is the most significant to human history. It was one of the first major disasters to travel the world so quickly. People knew within hours it had erupted. They were fascinated – thus began the interest in natural disasters and being able to follow them. The invention of the telegram and the eruption of Krakatoa soon after changed life forever.

I shall read this essay later. :3

1. What’s your favorite black article of clothing? I've got a couple of Shampoo shirts that are black, among them one where she wipes some blood off her face. It's pretty terrifying, but awesome nonetheless.
2. What’s the best black food? Chocolate!
3. How did you pass the time during your most recent extended blackout (power outage)? Got out some old DS games, NES games (on my GBA), meditated extensively and went to bed early. XP
4. When did you last play blackjack? Last year
5. What are some songs in your iTunes (or other media player) whose titles contain the word black? Blackball is the only one off the top of my head.
