Book 1:
-> I had left my house in Chancery Lane early, to go to the Guildhall to discuss a case in which I was acting for the City Council
-> Now he laid a hand on Chancery's side, beaming up at me
-> "All clear"
-> Empty shelving covered the walls to a height of two storeys, and the floor was strewn with broken cupboards and torn manuscripts

Book 2:
-> I was lying in my sleeping bag, staring at the light filtering through the red and green fabric of the dome tent

-> The fateful note came just as Lenox was settling into his armchair after a long, tiresome day in the city
-> And he walked out through the heavy doors, trying to imagine a way in which he could solve Prue Smith's murder without access to any of the subjects, for he knew he had probably entered the house in a professional capacity for the last time during this case
-> The bad apple
-> In fact, if I were an inspector, he should be where I started
-> And while he was looking forward to lunch--and while he took pleasure in examining his new book--he could not rid himself of the question he had been asking himself for weeks, as well as that entire morning: How on God's green earth was he supposed to ask one of his oldest friends, Lady Jane Grey, to be his wife?
