Yesterday mom picked me up after 4 and we saw a big smoke plume in the distance. It looked like it was by Farmer's Loop but as we got closer it looked like it was in Goldstream. As we crested the hill on Ballaine it looked like it was REALLY close to mom's house. Our stomachs were in knots. We saw some smoke jumpers too. We got to her house and decided to walk up to the top of the hill to take a look (I've been wanting to do that haha. There was a REALLY awesome view of the mountains and hills). We walked through the forest and found a trail above the power lines that looked like you could see the fire well. We got to the other side..and there was the fire on the next hill over. You could see the smoke and flames shooting up. It was really amazing to see. It was pretty windy and it looked like the fire was moving fast towards us so we went back home and mom gathered up the most important things in case we needed to evacuate. There were a lot of planes going to fight the fire..that was also very cool to see. Later after Ryan got home from work the four of us went back to the top of the hill..but the smoke was pretty thick so you couldn't see flames or anything. I'm amazed at the speed the firefighters controlled the fire and I'm extremely grateful to them. It's getting windy again today so I hope the fire doesn't start back up again..

FAIRBANKS — Firefighters were gaining control of the first large wildfire of the season in the Fairbanks area Friday evening. At 9:50 p.m., firefighters reported the blaze had died down significantly and no structures were reported lost.

The 700-acre fire was burning in the area of the Moose Mountain Ski Resort and appeared to be moving away from the most populated area north of Goldstream Road, although the hilly area in the vicinity of the fire includes scattered cabins.

The cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

The fire was reportedly about 1.5 miles from the O’Connor Creek subdivision.

Flames were seen shooting about 100 feet high in some areas, with some black spruce trees bursting into flames of about 200 feet. The main fire sparked a spot fire on the north side of Old Murphy Dome Road, but that was contained and put out, fire officials reported.

Winds were reportedly gusting from the south-southwest at about 10 to 15 mph. The temperature was warm, in the 70s.

No evacuations were ordered, contrary to earlier reports from fire officials.

One fire official on scene advised other residents stay close to their telephones and listen for a reverse 911 call for updates.

Fire officials also were asking people who are leaving homes in the Goldstream to not park along the roads because doing so impedes the movement of emergency vehicles.

According to the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center, the fired was discovered about 3:45 p.m.

By mid-afternoon, the parking lot at nearby Ivory Jack’s Restaurant was swarming with state and local fire personnel. Multiple tanker trucks from fire departments were lined up and waiting to be called forward to the scene.

Fire and emergency personnel were seen huddling near a state truck, discussing logistics and splitting up teams to survey and plan. Two fixed-wing aircraft were making repeated retardant drops and the Forestry Division was using CL-215s, called “Ducks”, on the fire. The Ducks were scooping water off the float pond at Fairbanks International Airport.

Residents mingled on the deck of Ivory Jack’s with almost an equal number of dogs they had taken from their homes, discussing options and whether or not to pack up valuables and leave.

“I grabbed my cats, my laptop, my Chapstick, a pair of jeans and my knitting,” said resident Kat Betters, one of a number of people watching the fire from the parking lot and deck of Ivory Jack’s Restaurant. “Everybody’s summer is over until the fire is over.”

Ten smokejumpers were driven into the O’Connor Creek area, located off the Elliott Highway.

The fire now is under the supervision of the Alaska Division of Forestry, said Pete Buist, a Division of Forestry public information officer.

By early evening the wind began calming down and fire equipment and personnel began showing up from Delta and Copper River, and more crews are expected, Buist said.

“Ground troops will be working the fire all night,” he said.

(Today)
The fire on Moose Mountain did not grow much overnight, although it was still active this morning, according to Division of Forestry information officer Pete Buist.

Planes have been ordered to drop more retardant, and then they will begin dropping water again, he said. Five crews are working on the fire now and three more from the state's Forestry Division have been ordered to assist.

Firefighters worked on strengthening the fireline closest to residential areas, which should prove beneficial as the fire is tending to backtrack from the direction it went Friday night.

It is still between 700 and 800 acres, Buist said, and no evacuations have been ordered.

"It was quite active this morning," he said. "Once the clouds started moving out and the temperature started heating up, there was significant fire activity. It's a measure of how dry it is."

"The wind that's on it is fairly variable," Buist said. "It can go wherever there's unburned fuel."

Thunderstorms are in the forecast for the area, which is a concern for firefighters because of lightning, as well as unpredictable winds.

OMG that is REALLY scary. I'm sooooo glad that the firefighters did such a great job with battling the fire. I couldn't believe that one picture of the smoke/fire so close to your mom's house. Wowwww.

I also can't believe that that one picture was taken at 11 PM. It looks like it's 4 or 5 haha.
