glacier_kittyFairbanks forecasters say Alaska's Indian summer is almost over
FAIRBANKS — Enjoy the weather while you can, because it’s about to change in a big way.
According to forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Fairbanks, the above-average temperatures enjoyed across much of Alaska for the past week and a half will be replaced by below-average temperatures by the end of the week.
Though no high temperature records have been set in Fairbanks, measurements have averaged about 11 degrees above normal since Sept. 9. Normal Fairbanks highs for this period are in the low 50-degree range.
Elsewhere in the Interior, McGrath tied or exceeded its high temperature record every day from Sept. 12-17. Kotzebue and Nome each recorded record highs of 59 degrees Sunday, and Bethel set a record of 68.
The abnormal conditions are the result of a ridge of high pressure that remained centered over the middle of Alaska in a manner more typical of midsummer than autumn. By the end of the week, however, that ridge is expected to move southeast, allowing colder air to cross into Alaska from northwest Canada.
That cold air mass should drop temperatures to 5-10 degrees below normal and create the potential for snow flurries along the Canadian border north of the Yukon River.
High temperatures today are expected to be more than 60 across the Interior, then decreasing each day as the cold air moves in.
