Aug. 16th, 2010 02:50 pmFAIRBANKS — Fairbanks set a new high temperature record Sunday with a temperature of 91 degrees at Fairbanks International Airport. The previous record for Sunday was 86 degrees in 1926.
The warm air Sunday was accompanied by high winds from the Pacific Ocean, also known as a chinook, that produced gusts up to 30 mph at the airport.
It was as close to a blast furnace as most Fairbanksans will ever get.
“It’s a pretty impressive event,” said meteorologist Rick Thoman at the National Weather Service in Fairbanks of Sunday’s blast of warm air.
The 91-degree reading also set a new modern (post-1930) record for the latest 90-degree day on record, Thoman said.
The old record was set on Aug. 5, 1994 with a temperature of 91 degrees. The latest 90-degree temperature on record is 90 degrees on Aug. 20, 1923, but that is not considered official, Thoman said.
Sunday marked only the fifth time since 1904 that the temperature in Fairbanks hit 90 degrees in August.
It was the second time in two summers that the temperature hit the 90-degree mark at the airport. The temperature hit 91 degrees on July 8 last year, the first time it reached that high in 15 years.
The record temperature was a result of “a very warm air mass” that moved into the region. Temperatures all across the eastern Interior, from Northway to Bettles, were at or near record temperatures.
In addition to Fairbanks, other high temperature records were set at Eielson Air Force Base (90), Fort Greely/Delta Junction (86), Northway (85) and Bettles (83), the weather service reported.
Temperatures are expected to cool down today but it will still be much warmer than normal, Thoman said.
“It’s not going to be as hot (as Sunday) but we’ll still be pushing 80,” he predicted.
The record high for today is 83 degrees, but it’s doubtful we’ll reach that high, Thoman said. The average high temperature for this date is 67 degrees.
With a high temperature of 80 degrees Saturday and 91 on Sunday, there have now been 14 days this summer when the high temperature hit 80 or higher at the airport, including six in August.
Yeah..that's quite hot for Alaska. At least it's a dry heat. Even Ketchikan and Juneau and stuff were sunny..people there actually take off work if it's sunny so that says how often it's sunny there haha
Would you rather suck pea soup from an old man's beard or eat the drool of a baby while she's eating strained peas? The pea soup
