FAIRBANKS — Just because it hit 70 degrees in Fairbanks on Tuesday for the first time this year doesn’t mean summer is officially here.

“I’m not going to say that,” meteorologist Cory Bogel at the National Weather Service in Fairbanks said. “Two weeks from now it might be raining and 45 degrees.”

Even so, it felt good, evidenced by the number of boats on the Chena River and amount of skin showing in Alaska’s second-largest city.

Officially, the high temperature at Fairbanks International Airport on Tuesday was 73 degrees, which fell shy of the record of 77 in 1977.

It was the first time in 249 days — since Sept. 10 — that residents in Alaska’s second-largest city have enjoyed such balmy weather.

Gary and Meg Miller took advantage of the nice weather by taking their 17 1/2-foot Woolridge boat for a ride in the Chena River.

“We went down to the Tanana (River) and came back up,” Gary Miller said as he trailered the boat at Graehl Landing. “We stopped at Pike’s (Landing) for something to eat. It’s a nice day.”

It was the first time they’ve had the boat on the water this spring.

“We’ve been looking forward to putting it in the river,” Meg Miller said.

Not far away, Tom Downes was throwing a training bumper into the river for his 4-year-old black Labrador, Stolie, who was enjoying the warm weather, judging by her leaps into the water.

“We’ve got to get her girlish figure back,” Downes joked.

Downes was taking some time off work and the weather was cooperating perfectly.

“I was out playing golf this morning,” he said. “It was nice out there.”

The warm temperatures are the result of a warm air mass centered over the Tanana Valley and should continue through the weekend, though Thursday could be cooler with some rain, Bogel said.

“It should rebound pretty nicely after that,” he said. “Temperatures will run 5 or 10 degrees above average.”

Highs this the weekend are expected in the mid-70s.

Yeah it is sooooo nice today..74, sunny, windy..*droools* I love Fairbanks summers

Would you rather always have fingernail fungus or always have nasty nose warts? Fingernail fungus?

Today's trivia: In ancient Rome, being born with a crooked nose was a sign of a good leader

Sounds lovely! My best friend just got a job working on a cruise ship that will be going up the Pacific coast of Alaska and she was all upset because she thought it'd be all icy and cold and I was like DUDE, it's still summer, just farther North!! So now she's pretty excited. :D

OMG that sounds lovely! It was probably about that same temperature here today. Yay! Hopefully the 70s decide to stay instead of being fickle haha.

I think I'd rather always have fingernail fungus.
