FAIRBANKS — Evidently the Alaska fire season isn’t over just yet.

The recent spell of warm weather has breathed life into a small wildfire that was thought to be dead on military land 25 miles south of Fairbanks.

The Dry Creek Fire, which was caused by lightning back on June 23, had been dormant for the past several weeks but was reported to be burning again following a surveillance flight by the Alaska Fire Service this week.

“They started to see smoke and then they started to see fire,” Alaska Fire Service public affairs specialist Mel Slater said.

No fire activity was detected during previous surveillance flights, but the fire had not been declared out, he said.

The fire was “crowning, torching and running,” according to the daily a situation report issued by the Alaska Fire Service on Wednesday. The fire had grown by approximately 100 acres to an estimated 520 acres.

The fire came back to life as a result of unseasonably warm weather in the Interior the past week. High temperatures have been in the mid-70s, about 10 degrees warmer than normal. Temperatures are expected to cool slightly starting Friday when more clouds move into the Tanana Valley, according to the National Weather Service. Even so, temperatures should remain in the upper 60s to lower 70s with no rain in the forecast.

The Dry Creek Fire is one of eight fires listed as active in Alaska and the only one that is showing any fire activity, Slater said. The remaining fires are all being monitored with surveillance flights on a continuous basis, he said.

The fire is located in a remote area south of the Tanana River and will be placed in monitor status because it is in a limited suppression area and doesn’t pose a threat, Slater said.

I thought I smelled something yesterday. This summer has been lucky for fires..we usually get smoke and can see giant smoke plumes but yesterday was the first time there was any clue of a fire. I like the smell though haha. Mom said she saw the fire driving home from Northway yesterday
