I finished Ghosts of Cape Sabine, so I'm going to write some quotes from it here. A lot of the book was pretty boring (I agree with the person on Goodreads who said at least 100 pages should have been chopped out), but when it finally talked about the poor starving men..wow. D: Only six people out of the 25 survived (now I know who Fort Greely is named after lol, which is about an hour south of Fairbanks)
"For a further nine hours, they struggled on in darkness, guiding Elison ahead, but he kept staggering off course, his eyelids frozen together as if glued" (ouch!)
"Trudging over rough and heavy ice, they spent seventeen hours bringing the three men in. So solid were they frozen in the bag that it had to be chopped apart to release them" (and hope they don't accidentally hit you? D: Yikes)
"Thoughts of Christmas at home still lingered when, in the gloom of the cramped hut, Elison was heard to gasp. When his comrades eased him out of his sleeping bag, his right foot presented 'a horrible sight. The flesh had sloughed away, leaving the bones entirely devoid of covering.'" (D: D: D: *shudders*)
"Breakfast was little more than hard bread and tallow, but dinner, Hampden Gardiner recorded, was 'a fine meal of giblet stew, hearts, liver, etc, with two butter cans, each three pounds, full of pure blood'" (ewww)
"Hitherto, Pavy had spooned food into Elison's mouth. But the injured sergeant felt strong enough to sit up in his bag for short periods, and his comrades had attached a spoon to his finger stumps" (I don't think "injured" is a strong enough word to describe his condition..wow)
"Greely had used some of his sealskin jumper for shrimp bait. What was left he gave to the party to roast and eat. Also, 'the oil-tanned covering on my bag was cut off and divided'"
"Before they got started, Ralston died, 'an excellent observer' who for days past was too weak to hold a spoon. Greely had helped feed him. The two had shared the same bag with Sergeant Israel, who left the bag when Ralston died, but Greely 'remained until driven out, chilled by contact with the dead'"
"Hunger grew intolerable. Writing to Henrietta, the commander wondered 'how we live on a handful of saxifrage, half an ounce of sealskin, and five to ten ounces of wretched shrimps.' The saxifrage was mere shreds; the sealskin sliced from thongs used for sledge lashing. They were blended into a shrimp stew, augmented at times by cut portions of oil-tanned sleeping-bag covers"
"Still aggrieved from past wrongful accusations, Schneider claimed some redemption from the discovery among Bender's and Pavy's clothing of 'burned and unburned sealskin, both showing how dishonest they were.' Schneider made sure the world would know the truth. As 'a dying man,' he asserted his innocence. 'I only ate my own boots and part of an old pair of pants I received from Lieutenant Kislingbury'"
"As far as Greely knew, his men were eating thongs, boot soles, scraps of moss"
"Muscular weakness prevented normal excretion. Men thrust fingers, even sticks, into the rectum to dislodge hard stools" (OMG D:)
"The sealskin, cut into thumbnail-sized squares, became an ingredient of broth made of moss and lichen, which the men had little strength left to scrape from between rocks"
"Greely now thought his six remaining comrades could cut enough sealskin from the clothing of the living and dead to last ten meals, 'if eked out with reindeer moss, saxifrage buds, and tripe de roche'"
"Surgeon Howard Ames of the Bear boarded the Thetis and helped Surgeon Green subdue a delirious Elison by morphine injection. They examined his injuries. Both feet were gone, the ends of the tibular and fibular protruding and the stumps 'suppurating freely.'" The fingers of Elison's left hand were intact but 'broken and dead.' Of his right hand, two were gone. Green 'removed the remaining fingers and thumb with bone pliers'" (eeesh..poor Elison D:)
"The amputations were of no avail, for Elison died three days later. Denuded of hands and legs, weighing just seventy-eight pounds, the soldier who had displayed such miraculous endurance was sewn up in a blanket and put in a tank with his comrades"
Wow D:
If there's one thing I've learned from reading polar exploration books, it's that even though Robert Falcon Scott may not have been the best prepared, he had the best men on any expedition I've read about so far (Shackleton's were pretty good too, but Scott's men just stand out to me). Other expeditions were always fighting and stealing from each other and stuff, but Scott's men got along amazingly well. They seemed like amazing people, especially Wilson, Birdie and Cherry <3

I think I found this in a geocache lol
