Different, not less
Feb. 25th, 2016 04:12 pmYesterday mom and I watched the movie Temple Grandin, since Temple will be in Fairbanks next week. I was BAWLING all over mom after it was over haha. I wish I could post the ending scene here, but YouTube disabled embedding it for some reason. Here is part of what she said: "I'll always be autistic. My mother refused to believe that I wouldn't speak. And when I learned to speak, she made me go to school. And in school and at home, manners and rules were really important. They were pounded into me. I was lucky. All these things worked for me. Everyone worked hard to make sure that I was engaged. I mean, they knew I was different, but not less. You know, I had a gift. I could see the world in a new way. I could see details that other people were blind to. My mother pushed me to become self-sufficient. I worked summers at my aunt's ranch. I went to boarding school and college and those things... Those things were uncomfortable for me at first, but they helped me to open doors to new worlds"
OMG my experience was so similar and I was so happy someone else understood that I just couldn't help crying. Mom always knew I was different, but never treated me less or acted like I was a weirdo. I also see details other people are blind to..all the time I'm telling or asking mom if she saw something I did, but a lot of the time she says she doesn't..it seems weird to me since things like that stick out like crazy to me lol. Everyone (including myself) worked hard helping me as well..I couldn't have asked for a better mom. Temple said she would never not want to be autistic, and I feel the same way, even if it is stressful sometimes. I hope I'm able to talk to her and get a picture with her..she is amazing <3
One of these days I'm gonna upload the rest of my Hawaii pics lol :P /lazy

Date: 2016-02-26 09:37 am (UTC)Temple Grandin sounds like a very inspirational person - it's such an amazing feeling to have someone just "get you".
I wouldn't want to not have BPD either...as much as it can hurt and make things difficult, it's also made me a very compassionate person with a lot of empathy and understanding for others and I am glad to have those qualities.
