Today mom and I went on a biplane ride! We kept passing the place and I wanted to try it. We opted for the 20 minute ride to Pigeon Key and back (I think it was $199 for two people..we split it, so it was very reasonable). I had never been in a biplane before! Omg it was SUPER AWESOME!! The water was sooo blue and clear and gorgeous! We saw some manatees, lots of manta rays and some sharks! I love seeing how places look from the air! That was definitely one of the best parts of the trip so far :D

Tomorrow we're leaving the Keys and going to Vero Beach, where grandpa used to live and where more of his friends live. I hope it's less hot there, the Keys are way too hot for me haha

Yesterday mom and I found five caches. The last one we found was super awesome..we figured it was in a coconut since the clue was "a hard nut to crack." We found the coconut and mom lifted it a little..we could tell it was huge cause a bunch of the ground moved. Mom lifted it and uncovered a big hole in the ground with a big container (the coconut was glued to a board). Awesome!! One of the coolest caches I've ever seen..hidden in plain sight! After we uncovered it another car drove up and a lady was like "aw man, they found it before us!" Cool, other cachers! I'd never met other cachers when geocaching before haha. It was fun to chat with them haha

Today mom and I went to Key West (50 miles from Marathon). Key West is very..interesting. There are lots of people and it's busy and there's all these weird seedy shops. Plus it was HOT. First we went to the Hemingway House..yay kitties everywhere!! Hehe. It was fun to pet them and squee over them haha. I think they can go anywhere they want..like I saw one on Hemingway's bed. Aww. The house itself wasn't super interesting though (except for the old books). After that we got lunch, looked in some shops and found a cache or two. By now I was hot, sweaty and gross (mom said she hadn't felt that gross in a long time) and all I wanted to do was to go swimming (good thing we brought our bathing suits). We found a beach, changed and went swimming! Surprisingly, the water was COLD! It felt amazing after getting used to it though..so refreshing!! We swam to this nearby rock island and saw some cool fish. After that nice swim we went to the southernmost point in the US (I felt far from home haha). There was a line by the marker to get your picture taken by it, but we found a sneaky place so we didn't have to stand in line. ;) By now we were totally done with downtown Key West and hungry, so we drove out of town and had dinner. I found out too late there's a Hard Rock Cafe downtown! It probably was crazy busy, but still..I don't like missing opportunities to go there! Oh well, the Mexican food we had was good. :P Then we drove back to Marathon. In all we found 5 caches (that seems to be our magic number in Florida haha). I'm glad Marathon isn't crazy like Key West. :P I definitely got sunburned too..the sun was intense today!! Now I'm ready for a nice shower lol

Yesterday grandpa drove mom and I around and showed us where he used to live and other of his friends' houses (one where I went swimming when I was like 4..such a weird feeling). It was cool to finally see the the places grandpa has always talked about. Mom and I also found a couple geocaches and hung out a little at the beach. That beach water was definitely the warmest I've ever felt haha. The water was so clear and pretty..it was shallow for a long way too! Then a little later we all went to dinner at this Italian restaurant..they had the fastest and most efficient service I've ever seen at a restaurant haha..they probably even moved a little too fast. Wow haha..it was good though. Then we just relaxed at the house

This morning Pete and Rose (grandpa's friends) took us out in their boat! They have stone crab pots and Pete checked them..I was alarmed when the first one he got he broke one of its claws off! The claws grow back, but I wasn't expecting that haha. In other pots there were lobsters and a pufferfish! It was fun to hold them haha. It was nice to sit in the sun. We also explored some of the canals in the area (peoples' houses back up to them, like Pete's). Mom and I are gonna go geocaching again soon..the weather's too nice not to!

We finally made it to the Keys! We left Monday morning..it was storming somewhat! It had been a long time since I'd seen a "real" storm! We kinda hurried cause we wanted to get ahead of the weather. We were about to stop at a rest stop when we heard this weird noise..like something under grandpa's feet was shredding. We stopped at the rest stop and figured it was the flap hitting the tire. Well..a mile down the road grandpa was like "uh oh, I lost the brakes and steering!" He did manage to pull over on the side of the road..he looked under the RV and said the serpentine belt was shredded (it controls everything..the brakes, steering, etc). He said it happened a year and a half before too..he couldn't believe it happened again! So began the day of calling. We were gonna get it towed, but then we called a truck repair place and they said they'd drive over and repair it for us, so we canceled the tow. By then the weather was catching up with us again and it was raining and storming. The cars going by kept shaking the RV..annoyingg. The mechanic came and looked in the engine area..then he said he couldn't fix it there cause the belt was wrapped around a fan and some other part was locked up (that's why the belt broke). Soo then we had to call the towing people all over again. Before they came grandpa went out in the rain to unhook the car..he came back in with fire ants all over his shoes..he was standing in a fire ant nest! We kept killing the ants he brought in..jeez haha. The tow truck came..and the guy said his truck wasn't big enough to tow the RV. Ughhhh. We called yet more people..but everyone seemed to be busy with accidents from the weather. Eventually someone said they could be there in an hour or two. We were SO happy when it eventually came..I had never been so happy to see a tow truck haha. In all, we were stuck there for SEVEN HOURS!!! Yeah, not a good day haha. The truck towed the RV to Bradenton, 15 or 20 miles away, to the place that would fix the camper (it was 7 something, so they were closed by then). They said we could park on the strip of grass by the fence. Not the greatest spot, but better than the side of the road. We all just wanted to go to bed after that stressful day haha..not the greatest sleeping night though..with all the traffic and street lights and the pouring rain and howling wind. I was so relieved when morning came haha

In the morning, the repair people said it would take a few hours to fix, so we got breakfast and checked out a beach real quick (and found a quick geocache haha). The weather was much nicer this day. They were done fixing it when we got back, so we finally continued our journey to the Keys. I don't think grandpa wanted to drive much..he stopped for the day at a state park in the Everglades with plenty of daylight to spare. It was a nice place, except for not having wi-fi. We tried to find a couple geocaches, but mom and I are completely freaked out by having to poke around in the woods. I'd rather not find it than get bitten by snakes and stuff (we don't like caching in Florida haha). We had dinner at Naples, 15 miles away, then went back to the camper and went to bed

Today we drove through the Everglades to get to the Keys..cool, I'd never been there before! We saw lots of birds, some alligators and lots of creepy spider webs. D: Haha. It was cool finally getting to the bridge that would take us to the Keys. The water was gorgeous! I was so relieved when we got to grandpa's friend's house (in Marathon, on Grassy Key), where we're staying for the time we're gonna be here. I was tired and bored and was having Internet withdrawals haha. His friends are nice and their house looks out on water..nicee. They have definite Boston accents hehe. ;) It's so nice to just relax online now! Adventuring out will just have to wait ;)

I just read a book called Tales of a Western Mountaineer..it was written in the 20s, so it had some interesting/funny passages (plus the author was a good writer). I'm gonna post some of the passages here

"For a great mountain is like a great poem. At first acquaintance our minds have not the power to grasp its full magnificence. But as we know it day by day and year by year new beauties unfold, new grandeurs appear, as our senses develop new powers to understand and to measure, until, at last, if our minds be great enough to comprehend, it finally stands forth in all its sublimity"

"Long after the eastern walls were wrapped in semi-darkness, the sunlight would play upon the western slopes, and when the sun had dropped to rest behind the somber ridges of the far Cascades, the wondrous afterglow would linger lovingly upon the summit dome"

the rest )

We're gonna go to the Keys tomorrow or the next day..sweet, that'll be fun!! Hopefully I'll be able to swim in the warm turquoise tropical waters *drools*
