I shall post my Van Gogh essay here..tell me what you think and if anything needs to be corrected or something. The picture I wrote the essay about is here: http://www.vggallery.com/painting/p_0627.htm
Man and Life: The Tumultuous Journey
The painting Self-Portrait by Vincent Van Gogh seems like any self portrait, but not if one looks closer and knows details of Van Gogh’s life. He’s showing the hardships of his life with his brushstrokes, designs, and colors. One could plan every detail of goals in life, but life is unpredictable, and in Van Gogh’s case, depressing. As one can see in the painting, he doesn’t look very happy. These elements combine to tell the story of Van Gogh’s tumultuous life.
There are many swirls in the background of this painting. They look like wind, and if one imagines, one could feel it blowing across one’s face. Also, Van Gogh’s hair looks like it could be blowing in the wind. If one tried to feel the swirls, one would possibly feel grooves embedded in the painting, like when wagon wheels get stuck in the mud. His beard would feel rough to touch.
There is much blue in this painting, which might represent Van Gogh’s sadness and his tumultuous life. He looks about to cry in the painting, so blue could have matched his feelings when he painted this. Also, there is some green on his face, which could represent sickness. It could also serve to make his face look more pale, or just to match the rest of the painting.
One symbol in this painting is the swirls, which could represent wind. Wind can blow at tremendous force, snapping tree limbs like they were nothing. Life also blows one around, so much that some people just go crazy and become depressed, like Van Gogh. He was possibly sick and depressed when he painted this. He ate his paint, which isn’t a very healthy thing to do, hence why he could have been sick.
This painting shows his depression, sadness, and possibly sickness in his tumultuous life. His life was twisted this way and that, a measure of how cruel life can be. He looks sad in the painting, highlighted by the prominent blue. He had a hard life, and possibly he wanted to show this by means of painting himself. He was poor, but his paintings live on.
