The Iditarod: The annual sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome, in which being a fast woman is a virtue rather than a vice. Covering more than one thousand miles, the race is loosely based on the 1925 serum run, in which vaccinations for a diphtheria outbreak in Nome were delivered from Anchorage first by railroad, then by relays of dog teams. The modern race is a marathon, not a relay, begun in 1973
