Matanuska Glacier hike
Jul. 16th, 2010 11:20 pmLast night at around 10:30 we were in the RV and I looked outside and saw this glow on the clouds. We opened the shades and were like "OMG!!" It had cleared up a LOT. We went outside to take pics haha..we were freaking out and so happy it had stopped raining :P
This morning when I woke up it was really foggy..it slowly lifted throughout the morning but it was still cloudy. We had breakfast and got ready to go to the place for the glacier hike. It wasn't far from the campsite. We got there and had to sign paperwork saying it's our fault if we die, get frostbite, heatstroke, get injured, etc. Nice. We met our guide for the hike..she was from England and pronounced glacier as glay-cee-er haha. She also said Matanuska Glacier was retreating..but I've read that it's remaining stable. Hmm. We got fitted with crampons and drove closer to the glacier where we could walk to it easily. We walked down the terminal moraine, got our crampons on and started our trek of glacierness. :D Haha. The weather was realllly nice..some clouds but still some sun. Finally haha. There were a bunch of other people on the glacier too..some didn't have guides or crampons..eesh dangerous. This trek is now on my top 10 most awesome things I've experienced list..OMG it was SO cool! There were all these streams running down the glacier and blue ice and a LAKE in the middle of the glacier! Over the lake were these tall pillars of ice called seracs that become unstable and calve in the lake! How sweet would that be to see that?? Woww. That area was seriously one of the coolest things I've ever seen (the guide called it the beach haha). We got to go to a high part overlooking the seracs. The guide said she didn't take everyone up there and did with us cause we were doing so well with our crampons. Awesomeee. :D Then we walked back to the beginning. I got a couple rocks with cool striations on them. What a sweet experience! The guide told us about a restaurant that overlooked the glacier so we ate there. I had a Glacier Burger and a Glacier Cream Cookie (a HUGE cookie with ice cream and chocolate syrup) haha. Then we drove to our campsite near Glennallen. I managed to get pics of Nelchina and Tazlina Glaciers..not the greatest but oh well. This campsite has wi-fi that actually works! Haha. It's actually uploading my pics but there's no way they'll all get uploaded tonight..
Tomorrow we have to get up at 5:30 to go to McCarthy in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park (we can't take the camper there so we have to take a bus there). UGH. We won't have internet at the hotel. We'll get back to the camper on Sunday or Monday. I may just have to wait till I get home to post the pics (in between working! Eesh haha). I'll see what happens when we get back to the camper..
