Break out the barbecue.

A spring heat wave hit Fairbanks on Sunday when the temperature not only hit 50 degrees at Fairbanks International Airport for the first time this spring, but also 60 degrees.

As of 4 p.m., the high temperature at the airport was 61 degrees.

The warm temperatures will persist through the week and could hit 70 degrees by Thursday, meteorologist Rick Thoman at the National Weather Service in Fairbanks said.

“It is possible we could hit 70 on Thursday, which is a rare event in April,” Thoman said.
