Passages from Scott's diary

I just read Robert Falcon Scott's diaries of his last Antarctic expedition (the last entries were very haunting, wow. "It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more. For God's sake look after our people." *shivers*) and I'd like to share some passages here (reading the book took forever because I kept writing things like "good job, Cherry!!" in the margins LOL)
"The space between my bulkhead and the men's I allotted to five: Bowers, Oates, Atkinson, Meares, and Cherry-Garrard. These five are all special friends..." (awwwww)
"Cherry-Garrard is remarkable because of his eyes. He can only see through glasses and has to wrestle with all sorts of inconveniences in consequence. Yet one could never guess it--for he manages somehow to do more than his share of the work." (In the margin I wrote "Cherry FTW!! <3" I think his vision was worse than mine, and that's saying a lot LOL)
"Cherry-Garrard is cook. He is excellent, and is quickly learning all the tips for looking after himself and his gear." (Aww, I want food cooked by Cherry!!)
"My companions to-day were excellent; Wilson and Cherry-Garrard if anything the most intelligently and readily helpful." (SQUEE!! *swoons*)
"We are beginning to eat blubber and find biscuits fried in it to be delicious." (EWW haha!)
"Our pony died in the night...it is clear that these blizzards are terrible for the poor animals" (DUH)
"Yesterday Wilson prepared a fry of seal meat with penguin blubber. It had a flavour like cod-liver oil and was not much appreciated..." (Umm, yeah..GROSS lol)
"Whilst motion lasts there is a continuous music, a medley of high-pitched but tuneful notes--one might imagine small birds chirping in a wood. The ice sings, we say." (COOL!! Ice music!)
"...today Gran found a large fish frozen in the act of swallowing a small one." (Whoa!!!)
..."the cooks rival one another in preparing succulent dishes of fried seal liver. A single dish may not seem to offer much opportunity of variation, but a lot can be done with a little flour, a handful of raisins, a spoonful of curry powder, or of a little boiled pea meal." (D: NONE OF THAT SOUNDS APPETIZING. Blech!)
"Went for walk to Cape Armitage, but it is really very unpleasant. The wind blowing round the cape is absolutely blighting, force 7 and temperature below -30." (D: NOPE)
"Cherry-Garrard is another of the open-air, self-effacing, quiet workers; his whole heart is in the life, with profound eagerness to help everyone. 'One has caught glimpses of him in tight places; sound all through and pretty hard also.'" (OMGG. *MELTS* I really wish I could have met him :()
"The expansion of human interest in rude surroundings may perhaps best be illustrated by comparisons. It will serve to recall such a simple case as the fact that our ancestors applied the terms horrid, frightful, to mountain crags which in our own day are more justly admired as lofty, grand, and beautiful." (YES!!)
"At our morning service Cherry-Garrard, good fellow, vamped the accompaniment of two hymns; he received encouraging thanks..." (Awwwww, I want him to sing for me too!! Hehe)
"Bowers and Cherry-Garrard went to Cape Royds this afternoon to stay the night." (In the margin I wrote "yay, sleepover with Birdie and Cherry!!" Heeeh :P)
"At tea we broached an enormous Buszard cake, with much graditude to its provider, Cherry-Garrard." (OMG I WANT SOME)
"I have had several little chats with Wilson on the happenings of the journey [to Cape Crozier, to find the penguin eggs]. He says there is no doubt Cherry-Garrard felt the conditions most severely, though he was not only without complaint, but continuously anxious to help others." (<3 <3 <3!!)
"In one gust the wind rose from 4 to 68 m.p.h. and fell again to 20 m.p.h. within a minute..." (Whoa!!)
"We saw that there had been movement and roughly measured it as about 30 feet. (The old Ferrar Glacier is more lively than we thought.)" (LOL)
"The lower part of this glacier is not very interesting, except from an ice point of view." (LOL. And I also wrote "shhh! You'll hurt the glacier's feelings!" haha)
Jan. 26th's prompt is "what I'm eating," but I'm not eating anything, so I'm going to do Jan. 5th's prompt instead, "smile"
