Forest fire!

Yesterday when mom and I were going to Weight Watchers around 6 mom said she smelled smoke and saw a plume (she wondered if someone was doing a controlled burn). I didn't, and forgot about it till the meeting ended at 6:30. I definitely saw a big plume then, and it definitely wasn't a controlled burn. I looked on my phone at dinner and found out it was at mile 16 or 17 Chena Hot Springs Road. I wanted to go and see it, but of course they blocked the road and would impede firefighters anyway. Two Rivers Lodge was in the path of the fire, but luckily a ton of people responded and no buildings were damaged (we saw one of the firefighting planes..cool!). It definitely smelled smoky this morning (I'm weird and love that smell haha). I think forest fires are an exciting part of living here (as long as no one gets hurt or anything!)

FAIRBANKS — A fire erupted and quickly grew to about 35 acres in the community of Two Rivers outside Fairbanks on Monday evening.

As of press time, the fire was still burning over a roughly 35-acre area, but had spared all structures including the Two Rivers Lodge at 15.9 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road, despite it being in the path of the flames.

There have not been any reports of injuries to people or dogs in the mushing-oriented community. The road, which was cut off between 13 Mile and 18 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road for more than four hours, re-opened to traffic with an escort about 11 p.m., said Alaska Division of Forestry spokeswoman Maggie Rogers.

The fire was first reported at 5:30 p.m. at 17 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road on the north side of the road, according to an Alaska Division of Forestry news release. Winds generally carried the fire to the west towards homes, and most immediately toward the Two Rivers Lodge. The restaurant at 15.9 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road stands by itself on a small hill and was left a small island of green surrounded by fire-damaged black spruce forest.

The fire did not spread across to the south side of the highway Friday evening, although it might have spotted across in places, according to Rogers, with the Division of Forestry. The cause of the fire is being investigated, she said.

A large number of fire crews — too many to calculate — quickly helped with the initial response, including about four fixed wing aircraft and multiple helicopter.

“We had a tremendous interagency response,” she said.

All of the resources did an excellent job of knocking down the fire and helping ground teams get access, she said.

Alaska State Troopers originally set up a road block at 15 Mile to keep motorists out of the way of the firefighting effort. The 15 Mile mark ended up being too close as the fire raged westward and new roadblock was set up 13 Mile.

The fire broke out as many Chena Hot Springs residents were returning from work.

Will Putman, who lives at 14.5 Mile on the south side of the road was driving home when the smoke became visible.

“The closer I got to home, the more alarmed I got because it was right in the neighborhood,” he said.

Putman and his family put belongings in the car in case they needed to evacuate, but by 10 p.m., he said the smoke did not look as bad as it had before and they felt more comfortable.

GVEA cut off power on Chena Hot Springs between 8 Mile and 26 Mile. Power was also out Monday night in the Goldstream Valley because of a fire that was confined to a tenth of acre.

As of Tuesday morning, the fire was about 120 acres, according to the Alaska Division of Forestry. Chena Hot Springs Road is open, but authorities ask motorists to be aware of firefighting crews.

Wow, that's so crazy about the fire erupting and burning so quickly. I agree that wildfires are exciting, as long as no one gets hurt or homes get burned down. I can still see here how the past couple of recent wildfires have had such a huge effect on the population here... They still get extremely emotional when talking about it and I know several people (including one of my closer friends, Aimee), who lost their homes in those wildfires. Intense stuff! The last one that was out of control was in 2007 and the one before that was in 2003, so I feel like we are due... I hope not though.

I think I'd like the smell of wildfires too, I would think it would smell like burning wood, which I love.

I hope the fires are put out soon. Scary! I remember having to help my uncle evacuate his house twice because of fires (this was in Montana). I love the smell too.
