Go away global warming

I watched this depressing show on retreating glaciers yesterday..apparently Columbia Glacier is retreating 30 feet a day and could just disappear entirely. *sobs* It made me want to be a glaciologist haha. I don't want the glaciers to melt!

This is at Devil's Postpile. It was created by a lava flow. Then a glacier came and broke some of the columns off and you could see the marks it left behind (glacial striations) when you stood on top of it :D

Gussuk: One of a number of related Native words meaning "white person"--believed to be a corruption of the Russian word Kazak, or cossack. It is not a term of endearment

Wasn't that just depressing? Gorgeous footage but...depressing

Glacier melt is a part of Earth history, but it shouldn't be happening this fast :(

I've been to the Devil's Postpile, it's so awesome.

Yeah they did say it happened before and there have probably been many Ice Ages but it IS happening too fast now *sniff* It could be another thousands of years before they come back in full glory

Aww that does sound sad. :( I don't want the glaciers to melt either!

Oh yeah, random tidbit haha...the Wii game I was playing with Curran and Jerusha (the surgery game) took place in Fairbanks (at least the first part). One of the people you have to save got mauled by a bear and there was some gun accident, too.

I'm not sure if you had posted this since I haven't read all your entries yet, but I saw an article on the front page of one of the papers yesterday that Mount Redoubt erupted on Sunday! It made me think of you. :)

The melting of glaciers is really part of a much bigger problem. Our planet has too many Humans on it to cope with, and many natural resources are already in decline despite growing demand. Experts have predicted that by 2100, the planet will have enough natural resources to provide two billion people with a comfortable standard of living. Which is a problem since the population is expected to hit eleven billion by then. Simply put, if Humanity adopts a zero population-growth strategy right now, the stress that six billion people are placing on the resources might lessen in 2069. Maybe. Glacial retreat is just one warning sign that the planet has been throwing at us since the 1980s.
