I love doing this at the end of the year lol: Post the first sentence of the first post of every month in 2016 (as usual not counting the books I read lol)

January: 1. When were you last up on the house top?
February: This list may seem small compared to my lists last year, but The Worst Journey in the World was over 500 pages long haha
March: Reading "longer" books makes my monthly book lists look sad :P
April: That's more like it :D
May: Only one book finished this month?
June: The Fur Person by May Sarton (May 16) (I read this one in less than an hour..I read May's book in May!) [Well nevermind, I guess that one does count lol]
July: How is June over already? D:
August: Antarctica by Kim Stanley Robinson (July 8-24. Loved!!! A novel, but full of Antarctic history, and lots of mentions of Apsley Cherry-Garrard, who wrote The Worst Journey in the World)
September: Crossing Antarctica by Will Steger and Jon Bowermaster (Aug 23-31). This book sounded like a modern Worst Journey in the World..I'm surprised Cherry was never mentioned!
October: I probably could have finished a 7th book this month, but it just didn't happen lol..darn :P
November: Some guy in the introduction to The Home of the Blizzard said that book outshone The Worst Journey in the World..umm no lol
December: Also, my job is awesome

I love that The Worst Journey in the World was the first book I read this year. :D I didn't know it would change my life so dramatically though!

I just discovered the song I've been loving on the radio lately is "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. It's weird to Google a song to see if you've heard it before and it's one you hear all the time haha

Book meme

- Take four books off your bookshelf.
- Write the first sentence
- Write the last sentence on page fifty
- Write the second sentence on page one hundred
- Write the next to the last sentence on page one hundred fifty
- Write the final sentence of the book

Book 1: The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard (big surprise there LOL)
-> Polar exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised (LOL)
-> An alternative was offered to me in going faster so as to shake up the big pump on the main engines, and this I did--in spite of myself--and in defiance of the first principles of seamanship
-> Some three or four of us watched it gloomily from the shore whilst all was bustle on board, the men shifting cargo aft
-> At this moment our berg split into two parts and we hastily retreated to the lower and safer floes
-> If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward, so long as all you want is a penguin's egg

Book 2: Firestorm by Nevada Barr
-> If she'd had a foot fetish Anna would have been an extremely happy woman
-> If she didn't get out of this alive, Molly would kill her
-> Emerging from the block of wood was a chimpanzee in a cowboy hat and six-guns
-> That would have been around nine-forty-five
-> She took Anna's hand and held it till they'd landed

Book 3: A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin
-> The day was grey and bitter cold, and the dogs would not take the scent
-> Yet after a while the motion of her horse became as soothing as the rocking of a cradle, and Arya found her eyes growing heavy
-> "It was as if all the free folk had vanished"
-> The big wench was looking doubtful
-> "Aye," he added softly, after a pause, "and his father too, I think"

Book 4: Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
-> Lost in the shadows of the shelves, I almost fall off the ladder
-> But my new feature also introduced a bug, and now the shelves are all blinking out of existence when I rotate the store too far around
-> Her velocity is steady, even as the landscape rises underneath her; she's the little eccentric that could
-> I would frown at that if my head wasn't spinning with the revelation that Penumbra possesses a first name, and that it is--
-> A clerk and a ladder and and warm golden light, and then: the right book exactly, at exactly the right time

Name one friend of the opposite sex )

Today's trivia: More extras were used in the 1981 film Gandhi than in any other movie. 300,000 were used for only a ten-minute funeral sequence

Tina posted this interesting looking quiz on her LJ, and I decided to do it too. Here's the link if you'd also like to try it:

Here are my results:

Below the surface everyone is pretty complicated. Based on your answers, we think the following three traits are important strands in your personality:

Part of you is gripped by the fear that you’ll launch into something and completely mess it up. The upside of this is wise caution: people are indeed often too rash, whereas you know, by instinct, that holding back can save you. Probably, you feel shame and self-disgust a bit too much. But when you do feel in your element, you act with a wisdom and sensitivity never found in people with thicker skins.

Yeah, I'm always afraid I'll mess up something lol. I probably do feel shame more than I should, and I definitely try to be sensitive to other people's needs too

You have delicate, sensitive perceptions; you can be deeply moved by appearances – the right light in a room, or good food, or the texture of a piece of clothing. Expressive, intelligent language has a powerful hold on you; your mind works better when it is inspired and provoked by vivid imagery. It can be sad to live in a world which is often so ugly and not properly looked after. But you know that things can be otherwise, and you have the ability to appreciate the world at its best.

OMG YES. One reason I love books like Tales of a Western Mountaineer and The Worst Journey in the World is that their language back then was so beautiful ("And so you will sledge nearly alone, but those with whom you sledge will not be shopkeepers: that is worth a good deal. If you march your Winter Journeys you will have your reward..." Cherry could have said "you will have great journeys with friends" or something like amazes me how people can think so deeply and beautifully!
And like this one from Tales of a Western Mountaineer: "For a great mountain is like a great poem. At first acquaintance our minds have not the power to grasp its full magnificence. But as we know it day by day and year by year new beauties unfold, new grandeurs appear, as our senses develop new powers to understand and to measure, until, at last, if our minds be great enough to comprehend, it finally stands forth in all its sublimity" *DROOLS*)

You are good at seeing what’s funny, at relaxing and finding the pleasure of the moment. Play is random, whimsical, fantasy-driven behaviour which releases internal tension. Because it is detached from some pressures it allows you to act on weirder, perhaps neglected, parts of yourself. The downside is that it is no help in sticking with things that are not much fun but which need to be addressed. So it is well complemented by its opposite, Stoicism.

Haha, I definitely try to be funny and act on "weirder" parts of myself LOL

List five celebrities you think are attractive )

I love how crazy Greyboy gets when he's high on catnip :P

And I can't resist this meme since The Worst Journey in the World is the closest to me right now haha (I told mom she HAD to read it, so she took it to her house and I found it on a table next to me lol): Grab the closest book to you and open to a random page, what's the most beautiful quote you can find?

I'm..not sure how out of all the pages I turned to this one, but this is exactly what I was talking about when I talked about how great friends Apsley Cherry-Garrard (*shivers* I love typing his name!!) and his companions were:

'You've got it in the neck, stick it, you've got it in the neck'--it was always running in my head.
And we did stick it. How good the memories of those days are. With jokes about Birdie's picture hat: with songs we remembered off the gramophone: with ready words of sympathy for frost-bitten feet: with generous smiles for poor jests: with suggestions of happy beds to come. We did not forget the Please and Thank You, which means much in such circumstances, and and the little links with decent civilization which we could still keep going. I'll swear there was still a grace about us when we staggered in. And we kept our tempers--even with God

Wow. Great friendship like that is hard to come by! This actually made me super emotional. (Now I'M thinking that weird "stick it" saying, like when I push a cart full of books lol.) Very amazing and inspiring <3

I was reading old surveys from the end of last year and the beginning of this year, and wow I could see how depressed I had become! I can't believe I waited so long to get help!

Name something beautiful )

Comment with "I wanna play!" and you will be assigned a number between 15-50 of facts for you to share. [ profile] indigo_forest gave me 16. I'm not sure if she did that on purpose, but perfect number! Haha

1. Whenever I board a commercial airliner, I always touch the outside of the plane with my right hand for good luck. I've done that ever since I was a kid

2. Eyes scare me (especially close ups) and make me uncomfortable, probably cause of my autism. Just this weekend my family and I were watching Wayward Pines..the first episode opened with a close up of someone's eye. Ryan kept pausing it there to keep freaking me out LOL. Sometimes close ups of eyes actually makes me nauseated. I do look people in the eye, but it's not always easy

3. I taught myself how to read. Mom told me when I was really young and during car rides I would read the signs along the road. She was so surprised, since she hadn't taught me! It just felt natural I guess..

4. I'm terrible at math..I can do well if taught by the right teacher, but I will forget everything a few weeks later

5. I try to be as optimistic as possible. It just makes life easier, and makes the people around you happier too!

6. I have anxiety, depression, migraines and acid reflux, probably cause trying to function around "normal" people is exhausting and takes a lot of effort. Sometimes I come home absolutely exhausted after being around people. Dealing with my inner demons (thinking something bad is gonna happen if I don't do something) probably contributes to that too

7. I love clouds and weather..that was passed on to me from my mom, who worked for the National Weather Service and had to know about weather for her air traffic control job too. I love drooling over clouds with her haha (I saw some pretty cool storm clouds walking home from work today too!)

8. I collect rocks from cool places I go to, like glaciers, Sedona, etc. It has to be unique though

9. I LOVE the feeling of being's so peaceful and pretty. I also love underwater pictures, especially when the light is ripply and cool looking!

10. My skin is very sensitive, which makes buying clothes annoying. I hate jeans, super tight things, scratchy things, etc. I just feel SO miserable and uncomfortable if I'm wearing something like that (mom told me even as a baby if I wore tights I would get fussy)

11. I have always loved animals, especially cats. My heart breaks every time I hear about hurt/abused animals. I don't understand how people can do things like that..

12. I LOVE survival's amazing what people can go through and still be alive! (I recently read Endurance, about Shackleton's boat getting stuck in the ice and stuff..AMAZING story!!)

13. I have to sleep with white noise, otherwise random sounds just bug me (especially other people breathing..for some reason that makes me so uncomfortable..)

14. I've usually made friends with people much older than me (even as a kid)..maybe I relate to them better or something. A lot of people my age or younger make me uncomfortable for some reason

15. When I was a kid I loved watching the washer spin the clothes around when I opened the cover. I was SO disappointed when we got a washer that stopped moving whenever you opened it haha!

16. I'm not sure why this number feels lucky to me, but it just is and I feel connected to it lol

20:A song that means a lot to you? )

Today's trivia: The farthest object visible with the naked eye is the Andromeda galaxy, located 2.6 million light years from Earth

1. Go to Imagination Prompt Generator
2. Get five prompts and answer them!

1. Do you work too much? Nah, I think I work just the right amount lol

2. Story starter: It wasn't going to be easy to explain how I knew all those details about Pete's life. But he was a murderer who wouldn't confess, and I had to read his file and talk to family members so I could break him down and get him to confess. He hates anyone knowing anything about him, I better have lots of guards around me, he is very violent when angry

3. Right now, what is on your mind? Mmm, cheesy Pretzel Crisps..I hope that story wasn't lame..etc

4. Your favorite elementary school teacher. My 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Jordan. She had Guinea pigs and the students got to take them home for the weekend! That's why I wanted my own Guinea pigs lol

5. One famous person I would like to have breakfast with is... Jennifer Lawrence, cause she seems awesome and I think we'd get along well lol

17:A song that you would sing a duet with someone on karaoke? )

Today's trivia: Randy Gardner is the holder of the scientifically documented record for the longest period a human has intentionally gone without sleep not using stimulants of any kind. In 1964, Gardner, a 16-year-old high school student in San Diego, California, stayed awake for 264.4 hours (11 days 24 minutes). He reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses

Langue in me l'eco infranto
There are signs on the ring which make me feel so down
Denying the lying

Naked in midwinter magic
Here we stand or here we fall
Cruel Akron bloody bastard I now spit on you
To the wind I will sing the tale of the king

As I watch through the ages
Strong on your feet, you were blinded
I don't like walking around this old and empty house
It is the end of all hope

Nothing will grow here
God of dawn, father of thunder
I've learned all the lore, I've been told all the tales
Chaos in my conscience
